Formed by undersea volcanic eruptions, tectonic movement, and wind erosion; the land bridge known as Anuak Gorge precariously connects Sotho to the Ashlands down south. An extensive system of rope bridges and security tethers were put in place to make crossing the gorge safer, as a misstep sends one plummeting into the turbulent currents below. Harsh gales buffet the gorge while the currents from the Shilluk ocean thrash at the base of the narrow strip of land. The ropes that hold the swaying suspension bridges were made from the toughest fibrous plants in the continent and treated to withstand a constant beating from the elements. The weather here is unpredictable, so when the winds become too strong the bridges are closed off for travelers' safety. The rope bridges are checked regularly for wear, damage, or loosening tethers. The native Pahuin tribes call the gorge 'the serpent's back', alluding to the region's fickle weather and hazards.

On most days, the safest way to cross is by air than by foot. Anuak is infamous among experienced fliers as the ultimate test of proving one's skill of navigating the skies. Here all the elements are against you, and the careless earn themselves a swift descent unto death. The lingering scent of sulfur and ash drifts up from the Ashlands informing travelers how close they are to the gorge's end. The gorge moves in a steep downward gradient once you reach the halfway point, sloping downward as one exits the Sotho Coast and approaches the Moors Peninsula. The twisting shape of the walls, constant gale-force winds, and mercurial weather of Anuak have acted as an effective geographical barrier for the peninsula against potential invasions from warring mainland tribes.

In spite of these conditions, life still finds a way to take root. Hardy wind-blown bushes and grasses dot the sunnier sides of the gorge, emerging from nooks and crannies along the canyon walls. Surviving off what little condensation comes from above, most plants grow close to the ground and are either stiff or have wispy stems. Slow-growing trees which have carved a niche for themselves here are gnarled but deeply rooted. Burrowing insects, lizards, and rodents abound as they dig their tunnels, sheltered from the turbulent winds. Coloration of insects and lizards darken the closer one travels towards Eritea as the soil has become permanently stained from ash. Creatures from this particular portion of the gorge known as 'Anuak's Tail' are prized by medicine men and shamans alike for their potent toxins.

"When all else fails, move on to plan B. And when that plan fails, move on to the next plan."
