[OOC: Since the main character I'm using for this is Adel, Natsumi's companion, all regular, bolded text is her.]
Meanwhile, in the still noisy confines of the downstairs tavern, a domino effect was taking place. The exhaustion that Katerina felt while picking up her meal in the piano filled hall had been the result of a demon following her. An energetic vampire had made its way into the lobby, hungry and voracious for the emotions and sensations of those around her. She had been following the wolf for months, waiting for the moment to strike; and now was that time.
But before she went after the red haired vixen that had already escaped to the second floor, she made an appetizer of the patrons downstairs. Her feeding had been evenly divided between each person, and only after the final music number ended did the first victim rest in his meal. One by one they fell, the alcohol in their systems sapping whatever resistance they had to the invisible entity. Eventually, the singing stopped in a clatter against the piano keys, and only the most sober man was left conscious.
Yes, the bartender was the last one standing when Adel finally emerged from her veil. She sauntered over to him, gracefully avoiding puddles of food and beer underfoot. His breath intensified with every effort he made to remain conscious in her presence, but his use of the counter as a crutch betrayed his actual proximity to sleep's door.
"So the woman wasn't crazy." The innkeeper's voice strained, taking just as much effort to maintain as his legs took to endure the pressure of Adel's aura. She did not converse with him, however. Instead, she just smiled back from across the counter. Her form faded from sight once more, and a wisp of wind brushed past the owner's face amidst the pitter-patter of spilled drink. He didn't realize she had moved behind him: not until her arms were already wrapped around his mid-section.
"What are you," he asked with wide-eyed terror once he noticed the woman's cold hands underneath his shirt? The demon only responded with a single word before she drained the last of his essence through her touch.
"Hungry." Then there was a thunk; a splatter; a constant drip, drip, drop. The bartender fell to the floor, knocking off the valve of a nearby liquor barrel as he went. The ale within gushed out over his unconscious body, soaking him from head to toe until, at last, only the final few drops of the barrel reverberated in the room.
Adel's form vanished into the atmosphere once that the final man had fallen. It reappeared near the stairs that her latest interest had gone beyond, but she did not make her way to the second floor just yet. Instead, she paused at the foot of the staircase while the smell of alcohol, sweat and drool swirled around her.
There was someone else in that place: a lone maiden who had wandered in through the back door whilst Adel was dealing with the bartender. She hid as soon as she saw her father's encounter with the femme fatale, scared that she would suffer whatever fate said demon had bestowed upon him. Now she was stuck in a crawlspace under the stairs with no obvious escape, hoping that the woman who had stolen her father's energy would not come for her.
She was well hidden, this Merril. The foul smells of the area masked her scent, and she was quieter than a mouse being stalked by a cat. Not even a wolf could have found her in that place, but still she grew paranoid when she saw the intruder stall by her hiding place. The small slits of light between the steps allowed her to see the pink haired woman in glimmering detail, but they also intensified the anxiety that already hung around her like some fell cloud. She could only silence her heavy breathing in that moment by muffling it with her hands, all while praying that the demoness had not noticed the stairs hyperventilating mere moments ago.
'Please don't let her find me, All Mother.' Merril repeated that phrase over and over as a mental refrain. She only stopped when Adel started walking up the steps, and any sighs of relief from her were withheld until she could no longer hear the creaking of wood. She thought she would be safe then; that the creature wouldn't return. But when she exhaled her stress, she suddenly noticed another presence behind her. A dainty hand reached over her shoulder from the darkness, while a pair of lips nestled next to her opposite ear.
"I see you," Adel whispered, tightening her grip at the same time. Her voice sent spine-tingling chills throughout the girl's body. She tried to scream, but her mouth was immediately covered before she could even utter a sound. Adel dragged Merril back further into the compartment, thereby dealing with the last of the downstairs witnesses.
Unlike the men before her, however, Merril was not incapacitated. Instead, Adel pulled her close in that dark alcove, pouring charm magic into her head while muffling her screams. She became passive the longer she was in contact with the temptress, until, eventually, her breathing slowed and her head came to a rest on the woman's lap.
~There, there. It's not so bad. No one is dead. You are safe.~ Adel interjected her thoughts directly into innkeeper's daughter now that she had calmed down, filling her head with desires along the way. She had successfully hypnotized the girl, and was now deciding on how best to use her. It struck her at that moment that Merril was the perfect cover for a maid, and, given the innkeeper's most recent request from the wolf upstairs, Adel chose to bribe his daughter for a tease.
Like all those under the effects of Adel's charms, Merril was already looking lustfully at her. Her eyes stared at the temptress's lips, following her every movement and word as they poured into her. When Adel started to unbutton her shirt, however, the watcher turned into a predator. Merril tried to passionately embrace her temporary master, to bury her head in that heaving bosom that now lay partially exposed; but she was stopped by a solitary index finger.
~Uh uh,~ Adel said unto the girl's mind while holding her digit against the oncoming, pursed lips. ~First, you have to do a little task for me.~ Her free palm soon revealed a red rose. The flower appeared like any other, but was actually coated in an exotic poison manufactured by the old one's body. It would paralyze the limbs of anyone that touched it after being submerged in water, but do so without taking away any sensation.
Adel handed that rose to Merril and then released her finger from the woman's mouth. ~The woman in room 22 is expecting a bath and luggage delivery from the inn staff. Dress in the garb of your father's employees, bring the bags next to her seat in front of your father up to her, and then go fill up her tub. Put the petals from this rose into the bath before you leave, and be careful not to get wet when you handle them. Remember to act like a real maid. Service must be top-rated.~ With a soft touch, my steward then took Merril's hands and gently placed them directly on her breasts. She was taunting the girl with promises to come, allowing her to take in the shape of her chest before finishing her proposition. Then, with a fallaciously innocent gaze, she looked straight at her lustful puppet and spoke to her mind once more. ~Once you're done, wait until the woman is properly submerged and then return to her. She will not be able to stop you from entering the bathroom. Strip in front of her, taunt her with your body, and then I'll let you have what you most desire.~
Now obsessed with her own lustful dreams, Merril left the alcove obediently. She went into a back room, carefully guarding the rose she had been given, and came out in a completely new outfit. She looked like one of the inn's maids carrying a bucket of hot, sudsy water. It was the perfect disguise, allowing her to seamlessly perform the roll of Katerina's assigned maid without suspicion.
She did as she was told, down to the last rose petal, then quietly left the door unlocked before taking the dishes back downstairs. Only once she heard the water settle did she finally return, anxious for her master's promised reward.
