Within the land below the Abshah’mal Monastery lies a great recess formed when a portion of the island caved in. The earth covering a large cavern system collapsed in ages past, creating a large basin-like opening. Over time the rains and winds eroded the exposed sandstone and limestone walls forming Zobisika Beach. The beach surrounds a small lake at the bottom of the destroyed main cavern while tropical vines have taken root at the edges of the ceiling. Part of the original cavern’s ceiling is still intact, sheltering the walls from being weathered more quickly. The structure of this self-contained little patch can be compared to a round pot with a narrow opening.

Zobisika Beach was given its name when it was discovered by nomadic Anlo-Ewe searching for suitable places to roost. The waters surrounded by the underground beach are a mixture of salt and freshwater, supporting a wide variety of sand-dwelling crabs, migratory seabirds, aquatic plants, snails, sand shrimp, and small fish. Several species of small lizards have made their homes in nooks and crannies in the beach-cave’s walls as the water is a breeding hotspot for insects. The unique composition of the beach’s waters is a combination of the seawater flowing in from the Acholi Sea and rainfall from the tropical climate. Saltwater enters through an underground channel connecting to the extensive cave system that leads out to the rocky cliffs surrounding the island. The land surrounding the ceiling’s rim is lush with dense tropical foliage, further obscuring the beach except from an aerial view.
