Valiant, but ultimately futile: that was how Natsumi described the events that followed her offer of help to the clearly mad warrior. The illithid companion nearby had not escaped her senses, and she had hoped – in vain, perhaps – that the two would quickly kill off the beast before she had to lift a finger. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Though obviously trained, both showed a clear lack of efficient battle strategies for their current opponent's species. In fighting a crustacean, a warrior should always aim for the face. That was the cardinal rule of any creature with hardened carapace, but both these warriors were simply going for everywhere but that target.
Was it hunger? Idiocy, perhaps? Who could say? All the young druid knew was that the crab would suffer intensely before death rather than passing quickly at the current rate, and she wasn't about to let that happen.
"Sleep…" Natsumi said in the crab's own language as she reached out toward the creature's mind at the beginning of Xallithelid's assault. Hibernation energies flowed from her person into the crab, gradually slowing its movements as the battle raged on. Its senses were dulling at the same rate, even as it ferociously tore apart the landscape to attack the inhuman mage.
This was the only action the young druid committed at first. She waited for the next opportune moment before continuing: the point at which the mad man struck out at the creature's legs. Then, and only then, did another spell flow out. With a swift slam of her palm against the ground, Yamauchi called up a stone wall underneath the crab's front end. The force was great enough to throw it off balance, given its already loosened footing at the hands of hibernation and Silanus's attack. It began to tip over, as a result, allowing the quick footed Natsumi to rush in for an attack.
"I am sorry," she said as she jumped onto the creature's mandibles and plunged her steel claws deep into the creature's, one, soft, vulnerable area. "Be at peace." The aquatic animal twitched as Natsumi tore at its vitals and nearly moved to fight her until she finished the struggle by summoning her spear in the hand already deepest within the creature's flesh. The sharp object moved all the way through the crustacean's brain, killing it instantly.
So ended the battle, but the young woman's task was not quite finished. She was a firm believer in not wasting resources, and wasn't about to let the dead crab's carcass simply rot. Nay, she would use its sacrifice to benefit those left alive, but not before she assured the safety of the people that had allowed her the opportunity to grant it a quick death.
"I assume you two are, mostly, still intact," Natsumi asked while retrieving her spear and jumping off the dead crab. Cleaning her weapons on the nearest grass, she continued with genuine appreciation. "If not for your distractions, I couldn't have killed the crab so cleanly. Of course, that also means I put you in the most danger. Sorry about that." It was a fake apology, even if a well-concealed one.
