Hefeydd looked back over his shoulder at the other fairy, a grin plastered across his face. He didn't say anything as he floated away from her, feet hovering just above the ground as he approached the edge of the tables to look out into the hall and get a better idea of what they could do. There were some simple things of course, minor pranks that could be achieved while they were here by the food and drinks. Spells and poisons that would cause some pretty interesting things to happen…

The fairy wrapped shadows around himself and then thought that perhaps more would be needed. After obscuring himself he wound more magic around his shadow wrapped form, becoming invisible. Wings beating, he rose to the table tops and began looking around but was mildly annoyed and disappointed by what he saw. There were already all kinds of enchantments weaved into and onto the foods and drinks, someone had been here already and done exactly what he had wanted to do. To do anything extra now would be a waste of time. He wondered if it was other fairies… Perhaps from the other court. Had that been Raya's purpose in distracting him with the game? Keep him busy while other fairies began causing mischief? His brow furrowed, and almost absently he summoned some fruit and planted it in some of the bowls. The fruit was cursed, it would cause whoever ate it to become endlessly hungry. They would then eat more of the enchanted food, and the more they ate… Hefeydd began to grin to himself. The more they ate the more chaotic the reactions with the enchantments would be. This was good. Let the other fairies waste their time and power on these things and let him come by and claim the victory for himself.

Shivers ran down the fairy’s spine as her companion leaned in to talk to her, first saying her name in a whisper. Arayna was not sure how much faster her heart could beat, maybe that is why she felt so groggy. The fey attempted to take deep slow quiet breaths as she listened to what Hed was telling her. She needed to listen, she felt really bad for botching the game of hide-and-seek.

Leave Gran hiding, would that not be mean, Arayna managed to conjure out of her dancing thoughts. The fairy felt both relieved and saddened when the man spun away. His enjoyment eliciting a soft smile of her own, he was fun to be around with his antics and quirks. It was not boring, with time dragging, biting into her in a way that sapped her sanity and made her contemplate killing herself. It was such a nice change from being bottled. If she had to forget so many things, why could that feeling of endless entrapment be one of them?

Feeling more like herself, though still a bit dazed, she finished her quick survey. It looked to her like Gran had gone down the hall anyway, well they had not agreed to how far one could go. “What do you have in mind, Hed?” the fey asked keeping her voice low and soft, leaning into the wobbliness in her voice by making it singsong. Clearly, she needed instructions, she had not even been able to start a proper game of hide-and-seek.

Hefeydd stood, staring at the other fairy, his face a mask. His wings twitched, the only sign of his agitation at having been tricked into revealing himself in this game of hide and seek. So soon into the game.. Had this been her plan all along? He remained silent, listening to Raya's explanation, barely hearing it. Her compliment went over his head, he was so caught up in berating and cursing himself for being a fool. He didn't know why it was but ever since meeting this bothersome fairy things like this kept happening to him. It was getting to be… Tiresome, and dangerous. What if there were other fairies here watching? What if there were members of the court here? Bad enough that he had lost to the silly fairy, but he had intentionally revealed himself to her. He had… Forfeited the game. His wings vibrated more as his agitation grew. The whole time he was lost in his own thoughts, bordering on self loathing, he was staring at Raya, his eyes locked onto hers. It was only when she looked away that he was able to shake himself out of a building sense of melancholy. The demon was still out there, hiding… All was not lost. He thought things through and a grin spread across his face.

"Raya," he whispered, stepping in close to her so that his voice wouldn't carry too far in the quiet under the tables, "I think I have a better idea… What if we leave Gran here, hiding. You and I still have things to do, fun to have. We can see how long it takes her to figure out we are gone, too. Won't she look silly?" His hand moved, slightly, as if to reach out and take the other fairy's but Hefeydd stopped it. Traitorous thing, what did it think it was doing? Without waiting for a reply from his companion he spun around, continuing to spin while taking steps away from her, giggling quietly as he did so. "There's so much for us to do out there, do you really want to hide under here all night?" He thought back to what he had done to that mortal in yellow earlier, and began thinking about all the other things they could be doing now. His eyes sparkled with mischief.

Gran had been happily flying away, thinking about how she was going to hide from the fairy when she realized exactly what she was doing. She had been spending too much time around the idiots, it seemed. Well, at least these two were a step up from those babbling wrecks back at their little fairy glade… 'Theirs'. She froze in place as she thought that through. When had she begun to feel like that place was anything to do with her? She owed her existence to those deranged little fools, but that didn't mean she belonged with them. Cursing herself she swiftly changed direction, heading off into the hall. Let them play their games, she was done with that for the night. She would forget about them for an hour or two and see to her own needs.

“Hmm,” Raya sighed. The fairy was annoyed at herself for how much she missed being in contact with him. Her thoughts spun. It was nice, to be close. The fairy found herself wondering if she could ever have someone to be that close to. Could they ever be that close? Shaking her head she tried to rid herself of such thoughts. Though Arayna was often lost in thoughts, this was different. Like the thoughts were somehow from outside herself.

Maybe she was weak to charm spells, maybe a fairies ‘natural’ resistance to them was from being around them. Which she had not been. Arayna watched her companion even after he made himself disappear in shadow, it did not take much to see through his magic. Hnn, she did not know she could do that, was that how she had seen him before.

Sluggishly, Arayna’s thoughts caught up with current matters. Oh, he had thought they were to be hiding from Gran. He had not known she had revealed herself to the demon, thus making it her turn to seek. Guilt filled the fairy, between upsetting Hed earlier and approaching Gran she was ruining their game of hide and seek.

“I was confused when you used your portal to get into the ball. I went to ask Gran about it and she told me I was it. You were supposed to be hiding from me. I think I have messed up our game,” Arayna said slowly and softly, her thoughts still swam and danced of their own accord. “Gran was not hard to find before, but of course I don’t think she was hiding. Do you want to look for her with me or do you want me to count again so you can rehide from me? That ice statue was clever,” Arayna continued, she grinned sheepishly at him, her cheeks burned. It only got worse with the realization he probably could see her as she could see him.

Arayna busied herself with looking for the demon's magical signature. Even if they did decide to do a recount for Hed, that did not mean she could not look for Gran now. Through the swirling thoughts that edge bizarre agitation seemed to be returning. So what if Hed might help Gran hide; did that not just make the game better when it came to looking for the demon? After all, Gran could use the help.

Raya spoke, shattering Hefeydd's barely forming plans for how to hide from the searching Gran as he realized he was still holding her in his arms. Her warmth was seeping through his arms and chest, radiating through his body and obviously this was some kind of charm she was using against him because how else was she able to hide, while in his arms? He had been enjoying the feeling, but at the thought of the other fairy doing something to manipulate his mind he froze up. He inspect the defenses around his own mind. He had thought them suitable. Strong. As it turned out, he was wrong. His first thought was to dump the other fairy onto the floor and walk away from her but… He stopped. He glanced down, for once his eyes passing over her wings to land directly on the other fairy's eyes. He couldn't see her using any magic directly against him, just the magic she was using to maintain her invisibility. He stared at the aura of magic surrounding her again, thinking about what it meant. Instead of dumping her on the ground, which was what one part of his mind demanded he do, and instead of holding her a little tighter to his body to feel more of that comfortable warmth that contact with her always seemed to fill him with which was what a small voice somewhere in the back of his mind asked him to do, he instead just smiled and tilted his head, looking down at her as he gently set her down on the ground.

With Raya safely on the floor once more Hefeydd was able to take a step back. He continued facing her but put his hands behind his back where she would not be able to see. He could still feel the warmth from her body on his arms and hands, and in an attempt to prolong it he held one of his hands in the other. Instead of capturing the warmth, though, the cool feeling of his skin instead drove it away. He didn't know what to think about any of this, and so instead of trying to work things out he instead grinned at Raya.

"Silly, we are hiding from Gran," he said, forcing cheer into his voice though why he was having to force it he couldn't say, "remember? We're hiding, she's seeking." He rolled his eyes, then realized he was still… When had he let the shadows drop away? He thought back, realizing it had been around the time he had picked up Raya. He scolded himself, gathering the shadows back around himself. He felt somehow safer, wrapped up and hidden from her sight like this.

Arayna felt excited thinking she had spotted Hed’s aura. It did not last, though, as his aura seemed to be moving towards her. Hed was a very tricky fairy, well that made sense with him being the first night. The fairy gasped in shock as she was suddenly scooped up and flown away. Oh, so it had not been some sort of illusion, Hed really had been rushing at her.
The fairies face flushed as she was pressed against him, as they flew. Somewhere. Arayna’s head felt fuzzy, finding it difficult to focus on anything but the pleasing sensations of being held and her own heartbeat dancing in her ears. Why had he tackled her? Gran had invited him to seek hadn’t she, maybe Arayna had meant to be hiding from him. Still, that does not explain being scooped up.

The fairies heart accelerated even more, but this time in panic as she remembered him arriving through the portal and asking where she was. Did he mean to get her alone and scold her for whatever she had done? What had she done? The fairy again raked her brain trying to figure out what she could have done wrong.
Arayna winced at her companion’s hissed remark, then blinked confusedly. The fairy could not help but pout, she really thought she had done a good job remaining unseen. Even with their game, she had hunted for him invisible, so she could keep them a surprise. It seemed her ability to stay hidden was not up to snuff for fairies. Arayna would have guessed herself competent at the spell. Paying attention and not making noise she still struggled with, at times, but she had really tried.

Having decided to apologize she drew herself from her internal musings, only to remember she was currently being held. Arayna bit her lip as new thoughts of just staying as is surfaced in her mind. Her weight certainly did not seem to be bothering the man and being held close felt so comforting. Hmm, it seemed to be in contact with Hed was taking up her list of favorite things. *Don’t get comfortable novelty* Arayna thought, internally scolding herself. She had decided tonight she could have fun. To stay like they were was not right. Their relationship certainly was not that type… or this close. Or was this even close for fairies or was this a normal thing. The fairy could not remember seeing others of their kind cuddled up like this, though, it did not feel like she had been around the others for too long.

Being confused and lost in her own thoughts was not fun, and she had agreed to have fun. Sighing the fey addressed her companion, “I am sorry, Hed, I thought I had been careful when I snuck in while you distracted them. The lights were pretty, I did not want to leave,” she stated softly smiling up at her companion. Expression becoming more thoughtful as the fey continued, “Then I thought by hiding while seeking I would not ruin your hard work of keeping us a surprise. Who are we hiding from?

Hefeydd floated slowly through the air, spinning in gentle corkscrews as boredom fought within him against the need to keep his presence hidden as much as possible. As he thought about it he realized he would much rather be the one searching, instead of the one hiding. This hiding business started off fun enough, you find a good place or way to hide, maybe throw out a few tricks and then what? You just wait to be found? How tedious. What if it took Gran a long time to find him? He would be stuck up here in the shadows waiting forever, and there was absolutely no fun in that, was there? The only thing stopping him from heading back and finding Gran, telling her she had beaten him and he would do the seeking next was the fact that he did not want to lose. Even a fun little game like this. If he was found quickly then it would reflect badly on him and his court, especially if it was a demon that found him. He had to hold back a sigh that would have been loud in the quiet world under the table. This was going to be a long night. All he had wanted was to have some fun.

No sooner had this thought crossed his mind than he noticed movement below him, heading towards the figure he had created. He grinned, stopping the giggle that threatened as he watched Raya's outline close in on his decoy. He could tell it was her, just from the magic aura that surrounded her. She was trying to hide, but she was also looking for him? That seemed strange. Did she not understand the rules of the game? A frown creased his brow as he watched her, his vision adjusting to be able to see her through her invisibility spell. Full of curiosity, he watched her approach the figure and, for some reason, she stuck her tongue out at it! He grinned despite himself, but froze in place as she began looking around, as if searching. The silly fairy was going to get him caught by the demon if she kept this up! He looked around, frantically, checking to see if the demon was anywhere nearby. Satisfied that she wasn't, he took a deep breath and dove down at his silly companion. Flying quickly, magic making him faster and stronger, he scooped her up in his arms and shot off with her, a brief surge of power sending the ice sculpture flying off in the opposite direction.

"Silly fairy, you're going to get us caught!" He hissed at her as he came to a halt, deep into the shadows of a darkened corner of the room. He looked around, eyes piercing the darkness easily, still seeing no sign of the demon who was meant to be hunting them. He bit his lip, considering how best to hide them now. His feet touched the ground and he held the warm bundle in his arms closer, his mind on other things forgetting about the other fairy.

Arayna blinked as the demon’s appearance changed. The fairy’s cheeks flushed as her appearance transformed to mimic that of Hed’s. Gran had mimicked the man’s coloring perfectly, perhaps she was not the only one who liked to study him. This idea caused the fairy to feel strange. She was sure she felt mostly relieved that she was not the only one who did such things yet it came with an irritation feeling as well. Maybe that was because of the demon’s answer.

Arayna pouted at the demon’s answer or lack thereof. Sighing she conceded she was technically ‘found’ and turned her back to count. The demon would not be hard to find, unless she was hoping Hed would help her hide. Is that what she meant when she said she would hide with him. The fairy’s wings twitched in annoyance much to her confusion. Would he do that, he was just going to let her be cold while they found another way in when he had thought she could not hide herself. Well Arayna decided she may as well just look for Hed then. Beginning her count the fey focused on dispelling her bizarre irritation during it.

Having regained some of her playful mood despite the… strangeness that had occurred the fairy began her hunt for her companions. The fey almost pouted when she spotted a signature that looked like Hed’s. But the obviousness seemed too much, and Arayna decided it was instead suspicious. Bending the light to conceal herself, the fairy carefully made her way towards the signature. The fey giggled upon meeting the ice statue, that had been clever. The fey let out a content hum not understanding why seeing her companion’s cleverness made her feel so happy, almost giddy. They would have to play games more, it was fun to see her companions’ abilities Arayna decided, trying desperately to quantify the pull she felt.

Briefly, she thought of melting the statue or disrupting it’s magic some way but decided against it. If she destroyed it, he would know she had found his decoy and possibly make another. If she left it alone, maybe he would not know she knew what he had done. Of course, he might have kept a line of sight, so he could watch her folly. Yeah, that seemed likely. Sticking out her tongue at the ice Hed she started looking around for the real thing. If he was watching her, hopefully, she could spot him.

Hefeydd giggled to himself as he flew off under the tables, into the darkness. From outside, in the hall proper, he could hear the sounds of all the mortals singing, dancing, talking, playing their music. He hadn't had a chance yet to take a look at what was going on but the sound alone was enough to tell him that it was pretty subdued compared to a true fey party. There was a liveliness in the air, but it wasn't anything remarkable. He shrugged to himself, looking out at the forest of legs further into the hall. Well, he was here to make things more lively, wasn't he? They should be thanking him, though he supposed he was yet to do anything to be thanked for… His attention was drawn to a little songbird, pecking at some food on the ground beside a nearby table. There were a couple of mortals sat at the table, one in regular boring clothing and the other in bright yellow. It caught Hefeydd's attention, capturing his interest and made him want to go investigate. He could have a little fun while hiding from the demon, couldn't he? Yes. Then when they were all done playing the three of them could go out into the hall and have some more fun.

Hefeydd decided to go completely invisible, coming out from under the tables and looking up at the two people. The bird was in the air, flapping around the one in yellow's head, obscuring his face from view. Hefeydd thought quickly and with a little burst of telekinetic magic he sent the mortal's plate of food flying to the floor. He giggled to himself and shot back under the table, flying quickly. He hadn't stayed to see how that would play out, but hopefully the mortals would blame each other and that would cause something interesting to happen. He could catch up with them later. For now he needed to hide from the other two. The problem was that he knew both of them could see magic auras if they got close enough, which meant he would need to distract them. He thought about how others looked while they were invisible to his magic sight, and gathered some ice magic in the same basic form. He poured enough energy into it to make it look like a real fairy hiding from sight and then sent it flying off at ground level. He himself flew up into the darkest shadows at underneath of the table and followed along, hoping that with the brighter shape lower down they wouldn't notice him up there.

Gremory spun in place to face the other fairy and suppressed a sigh. The two of them were going to drive her crazy, between the psychotic episodes of rage and the sheer stupidity… Or insanity. She had to be nice to them, though. They had saved her from a terrible fate and for that she owed them. She didn't have to like it though. She put on her very best smile, tilting her head in a way that was very much Hed, hey hair turning silver and her dress becoming a purple that would match the male fairy's robes. She schooled her expression to seem innocent, as if the change and mannerisms were entirely sub conscious.

"Why, I have no idea. But since I've found you now I suppose it's my turn to hide with Hed."

She didn't have the same skills as the fairies, she couldn't obscure herself or turn herself invisible. It would take some time to learn how to weave shadows like Hed did. She couldn't move as quickly as them, or hide from their magical sight. In a game of hide and seek, she inwardly rolled her eyes at the childish games she was being dragged into, she was at a severe disadvantage. All she had was distractions.

"No peeking!" she called innocently over her shoulder as she flew off.

Arayna grinned at the demon’s response to her. They would play, this night would be fun. The fairy felt the familiar touch of the demon magic as words formed in her mind. Hnn, could Gran find her by looking for her mind. That would kind of spoil the game. The fairy moved behind the one known as Granny planning to just stay behind her.

The fairy bit her lip as Gran counted, to keep from giggling or sighing. Arayna could not help to access the other woman’s outfit. It looked like she had chosen to dress up for the occasion, too. Granny looked stunning as she often did, much more womanly than her own gaunt frame. This sparked an internal debate about how long it would take to not look like she had spent the majority of her life without food.

Her inner debate was interrupted as she was buffeted by a chill. Though the room was cool, with her cloak the temperature had been tolerable. Now she felt as if she had been sent outside, directly into a snow pile. The fairy shivered against the cold, trying to figure out what was going on. The fairy noted a gate opening, the magic of which she associated with her companion. Was the cold from the outside as he gate traveled in? Had something happened at the entrance?

Arayna felt paralyzed when Granny was asked where she was. The chill was not from the outside, and she had been right about the other fairy’s magical aura being that of ice. It was fiercely radiating from him, chilling the air and ground around him. Frantically she tried to figure out what she must have done to make Hed mad at her. The fairy blinked back tears as she prepared to drop her invisibility spell, clearly, she had done something terrible.

Though Gran’s voice had originally tremored, the fairy admired how she seemed to nonchalantly mention they were playing hide and seek. Arayna felt even more dumbfounded by Hed’s reaction. The chill dropped and he returned to his normal state, both in appearance and magical aura. What was going on, he seemed ok to play a game. Even with everything that had just happened, Arayna found herself studying her companion as he again wrapped shadows around himself disappearing.

Dropping her invisibility spell she addressed Gran, “That was strange, don’t suppose with your ability to read desires you could shed any light on what is going on.” The woman gave an absolutely baffled look at the direction Hed had disappeared.

Mortals rushed off to see the little light show he had put on, some of them laughing and discussing it with glee as if they thought it was a part of the festivities. Let them. The proud part of him wanted to show off a little, to create more and impress them further but that would just draw attention to them, and that wasn't the point, not tonight. Someone of his position shouldn't be trying to entertain mortals anyway, that was just nonsense.

Properly reprimanded, by himself, he turned with a grin to look at Raya. He had felt a tug on his robe a moment before and thought that maybe she was a little impressed by the display too. That thought sent a little shiver through his wings, though he didn't know why. Maybe it was a warning that he had shown her a little too much of what he could do. If it came down to a fight, then they little trick might have been just the distraction needed to win. At the same time he was berating himself he was also reaching out to take her hand again, but froze when he realized she was no longer there. He spun around in circles, looking frantically for her, trying to find where she might have gone. She was invisible, but not to his sight, so she couldn't have been hiding there in front of him. Maybe someone had taken her… A brief image flashed through his mind, of Raya trapped in a bottle, and his mind went blank of the many thoughts that were always swirling around up there just below the surface. A cold calm descended over him, chilling the air surrounding the fairy significantly. His tiny hands balled into tight fists, and his silver eyes darkened through many shades until settling on slate.

Hefeydd landed on the ground and took in a deep breath, closing his eyes and taking in all the smells and sounds that surrounded him. He was vaguely aware of the trail that was left behind by Raya, but he also noted there were some others of his kind lurking around nearby, as well as plenty of other breeds of fey. In a circle around him frost had formed over the ground, spreading out into an ever widening circle. Hefeydd paid it no attention, taking back to the air. If someone had harmed his companion… The temperature around him dropped lower and his eyes became pure black.

***
Fieri huddled under her cloak, the hood pulled up, hating the fact that she had been left out here in the cold. At least the company wasn't too bad. The stone creature was happily playing with her little black cat, giggling quietly and talking to him in a jumbled mixture of at least seven languages that she herself could recognize, her musical voice kept low so as not to draw attention. It wouldn't be much longer now before they would be moving, and it wasn't like the cold could bother her. She just much preferred warm fields, sunny meadows, the quiet of a midsummer forest… A small spike of pain shot through her mind, like a sliver of ice, causing her to wince. She was on her feet in one smooth motion, the enchanted short bow her companion had crafted for her in her hands, an enchanted arrow also created by her clever little friend, drawn back to her ear and she searched the night for the source. She could feel the presence of something…

The temperature around her plummeted, this magical cold intense enough to cause even her to shiver. There was an.. Unraveling of shadows and a small figure was suddenly hanging in the air before the two of them. Fieri glanced over to Twinkle who was bundling the cat up in the loose folds of her robes to keep him warm, but remaining crouched low to the ground. Those green eyes were glowing more intensely now, and Fieri could recognize it for the preparation that came with a burst of magic. She shook her head, lowering her bow. As quickly as she had drawn it she had put it away, knowing that it would be no use. With hand gestures she told her companion to calm, to not make sudden moves. The hand language the halfling had taught them had come in handy many times, now, and she was grateful they had stumbled across each other's paths.

The little figure was radiating power, leaking out into the physical manifestation of the temperature dropping. Ice was forming on the ground he hovered over. Immediately Fieri recognized him as a fairy of the Unseelie court. Fairies weren't something to mess with at the best of times, there were just so many of them and they moved so fast. This one, though, was something different. Powerful. Angry. She considered trying to talk to the fairy, but the King's curse upon her voice… If there was anyone else within earshot, it could be disastrous… Instead she dropped her gaze to the ground. In the grand scheme of the court she was just a dryad, so not very high up. Even though this fairy was from the other court, if he decided to take offense to anything she did… Fieri couldn't risk Twinkle getting hurt, too. She decided to play it safe.

"I'm looking for another fairy. Skinny, silly, sneaky. Where is she?"

The voice was harsh, cold, the embodiment of winter itself. Fieri shook her head violently, keeping her gaze down and hands at her sides. When she had looked upon the fairy she had seen ice forming armor over his body. His hair had been black and those eyes… They had been dark, empty of all emotion save a smoldering rage.

"Are you hiding her?"

Fieri shook her head again, and the temperature around her suddenly dropped even further, making her gasp out in pain. She looked up to see the fairy was hovering directly in front of her, inches away.

"Did you take her? Is that why you won't answer me?"

Fieri opened her mouth to speak, the King's curse be damned. If anyone else could hear then she would deal with the consequences. She looked up but the fairy was already gone.

Gremory was idly picking between two dancing humans and an elven couple clinging to each other in a dark corner when a familiar voice called out to her playfully. Well, it had taken them long enough but it seemed the fairies had finally arrived. She looked around, trying to pick them out but… She hummed to herself, wondering if this was some kind of game. She couldn't see anyone. While she was able to see magical energy when she chose, right now she was attuned to a different form of energy. With what she knew about this pair there was no wonder she couldn't see them if they were playing around with shadows or invisibility. Although… There was just a brief warmth, coming from a tiny figure nearby who was most assuredly invisible. Gremory chuckled. Well, maybe one of the fairies wasn't completely immune to physical desires, then. She rolled her eyes but didn't bother trying to see the fairies any more clearly. They were nearby, and from the looks of things they wanted to play a game. How… Cute.

Not knowing if the two of them were still close by or not, she sighed. She had spoken to both of them telepathically before, so would easily be able to do so again. If they wanted to play a game of hide and seek then she would humor them, for now, by going first. I'll give you until the count of ten, and then I'll come find you.

1… 2… 3… 4… 5… 6…

There was a sudden crackling energy that built in the air before her, cold radiating off of it in waves. It was a portal being opened, a portal that was her size. The gate was a swirling blue gate and what stepped through caused Gremory to pause.

"H-Hed?" She hated the tremble in her voice and was determined that it wouldn't happen again. She was a demon, dammit. The figure that stepped through certainly looked like the other fairy, though there was something different about him… His hair and eyes were a different colour and there was an energy coming off of her.

"Where is she?" His voice, always playful and bright was different too. Gremory scowled, considering her options. She could be petulant, act like she had no idea… But another look into those eyes made her reconsider, fast. She had no idea what was going on between them, and didn't want to get in the middle of it. At the same time, she was not comfortable around this version of Hed. Maybe she could calm him down…

"We're playing hide and seek, and it's the fairies' turn to hide. You can do the seeking next, if you wish." She tried on a smile she certainly didn't feel, and was relieved to see that as he blinked, clearly confused, the silver began leaking back into his eyes and hair. She hadn't noticed the cold, but there had been ice forming on the floor beneath the other fairy's feet, that was now quickly melting away.

"We're playing a game?" His head tilted to the side as he asked, his appearance and attitude back to that of the Hed she thought she knew. A grin suddenly split his face and shadows wrapped around him, obscuring him. The shadow wrapped figure shot off into the darkness under the tables and disappeared from her sight.

Arayna chased off her irritating thoughts of the possible length of her relationship with her companion. That did not mean anything to the context of what was going on now. The fairy had already decided to try to have fun and enjoy the night, there was no need to think of such things at the moment. Arayna fairy hummed contently as Hed led her towards the music and the building. When they were close enough that such an action would possibly give them away, she stopped, trying very hard to be aware of what was going on around them.

Some of her contentment faded away as her companion let go of her hand. The fairy had to fight a sigh. It was strange, Arayna very much preferred to be warm. Until this moment warm baths, basking in sunlight and being curled up in blankets against the cold would have been what the fairy would have listed as things that made her most content, but the paled in comparison to simply holding her companions’ hand. Never would she have guessed that something that made her feel cold would have made her most content. Maybe it was just being close to another being… or she was not as resistant as she should be to fey’s latent magic, some reports put fairies charming by nature.
Briefly, she pondered the idea of asking Hed for just some general knowledge about fairies; would he believe she did not know and was not just being silly? Arayna felt she needed to find out somehow, maybe some of their new friends would feel they owed her enough to answer some basic questions. The fairy’s attention was grabbed by her companion’s display. Arayna smiled brightly watching the light displays, he really was good at magic, she loved watching his antics. Realizing that it might be meant as a distraction she gently gave a brief tug at his robes, so he would know she was going, and headed through the doorway. Arayna was careful to stay hidden and staying alert to the reactions of those around her. Clearly, she could focus on her surroundings when properly motivated.

The inside of the ball surprised the fey. It was enchantingly beautiful, the structure itself was designed of different types of dark stones, paired with the sconces, made it look like she was staring at the night sky. Though beautiful to behold on the periphery, Arayna found it eerie and slightly unnerving to feel as if she was within the night sky itself. Vaguely she felt alone in an unpleasantly cold world. Shaking her head to try to ward away some of the discomfort, she tried to assess the room through the frame of needing to remain hidden.

The amount of magic being used would easily allow the two fey to blend in as long as they did not use a crazy amount of magic. Arayna studied the people and their aura, some looked familiar. The fairy almost excitedly rushed over to a few she was sure she knew, only at the last minute remember that they were being sneaky. The fairy made a note to tell Hed she wanted to greet some people later, it was excited to be able to see them again.

An aura coming from one of the tables was a little too familiar not to investigate. What was she doing here, were more of their new friends here with her? Excitedly she fluttered towards the table and joined the possibly familiar creature underneath. Were the fey going to have their own little ball under the table; that would be fun. It could explain why Hed wanted to be hidden, too, big people could so easily ruin the wee folks fun due to their size and clumsiness.

”Granny is that you,” Arayna asked, her voice sing-song and annunciating it in a way that almost made it sound like an invitation to play a game. Hide and seek under the tables could be fun, maybe they could try to hide from Hed. If there were the two of them, they might stand a chance.

If he had thought the touch of her was warm before, through the cloak and dress beneath, the feeling of her bare skin touching his own was something else entirely. He tilted his head, looking down at her hand, holding on to his. They had done this before, and recently, while in the presence of the fey lord. He… Wanted to want to pull his hand away from the sneak fairy he had somehow come to be followed around by, but the sensation was pleasant. Her skin was soft and warm, the feeling seeming to travel slowly through his hand and up his arm. He had to work hard to scowl, and his heart wasn't in it. He wondered, briefly, if she could truly see him or just see the magic that surrounded him. This gave him an idea to distract anyone who might be outside the hall they were about to approach, people who might be instructed to look out for invisible visitors. He smiled and held on to his companion's hand, for a while not thinking about the plots she was most assuredly hatching against him. Instead he led her through the darkness, towards the hall and the source of all the music, keeping her hand within his own.

As they approached the hall Hefeydd stared at the door leading in. Even with his vision attuned to the magic spectrum he couldn't see anyone he suspected might be watching out for unwanted visitors. There was plenty of magic though, plenty of people using it, surrounded by it and coming from the building itself. That didn't mean there wasn't anyone there, though. That just meant that if they were there, then they were hiding expertly from his sight. He frowned, and was about to produce some balls of magical light and energy away from where they were when he remembered he only had one hand. He looked down, staring at his hand and Raya's, frowning slightly. He was… Reluctant to let go. He was the First Night, though. Reminded of this he slipped his hand from hers and produced the balls of light far away from them. He shot them off into the night, making them dance in all kinds of shapes and patterns before having them explode into a final flash, far from the doors.

Arayna pouted a little when Hed, too, became obscured. His technique was interesting, shadows seemed to be bending as well. Arayna had hoped to study her companion a little, she often found herself too embarrassed and worried about being rude to really study him, maybe some other time.

Arayna focused herself on finding his aura, it would be hard to follow him if she had no idea where he was. Humming she focused on where her companion had disappeared, only to find that he had moved. Was he trying to be sneaky and scare her; surely, he could not expect that to work as did not all fairies see auras? Maybe it was just a way to have fun, she had lost him for a moment, should she play along?

Arayna found herself too drawn to studying her companions’ magical tone to try to pretend she could not see him. The fairy keenly watched as her companion floated about, as he often did when they were idle, though maybe a little slower than normal for him. His magical signature seemed to very much belong in the environment they were in, ice and snow. There was likely more to his aura, but Arayna was not well trained in studying them; it was just something she could see by nature.

As Hed touched her shoulder it dispelled a small lingering concern that she was just somehow picking up the magic of the area and not Hed’s true signature. He felt cold, but not unpleasantly so like the chill around them. Realizing that this might just be an effect of the ice cloak being pushed down against her, Arayna reached out and captured his hand. He had guided her before in this manner, so could pull her through the crowd in the same fashion.
Yes, he was cold, but it was not in a way that made her want to draw away. It was a cold yet pleasant, almost tingling sensation, much like handling the silver coins that had long lingered on the floor in a darkened corner of the floor. Well, that seemed suitable to him as well. Arayna chuckled, was her companion just made of silver, it often seemed an apt thing to compare him to.

“Lead the way, let us go to be a surprise and have fun, Arayna said happily. It was exciting, this idea of just trying to have fun with a being of her own kind. Arayna was already just enjoying spending time with Hed.

Hefeydd thought about the first time he had become invisible, the time spent trying to get the light to bend just right to cause the effect he was looking for. While now it was second nature, magic involving darkness and ice came so much easier to him. That was probably why he preferred to go around obscured instead of being truly invisible. As the other fairy used her magic and smoothly removed herself from sight he couldn't help but feel a little… Annoyance. He hid his annoyance but his wings twitched. His eyes adjusted quickly and he saw the magical aura surrounding her, revealing her to his sight. He tilted his head to his side, studying her aura, curious. It wasn't exactly what he had expected. She could be changing her aura with magic, though. That made more sense. He nodded to himself. proud he had seen through another of the silly fairy's plots. His eyes adjusted further and he was able to see through her invisibility completely, now knowing where she was.

He himself wrapped shadows around his body, obscuring himself from sight. At the same time he bent the light around his body to become invisible. He grinned to himself, keeping the shadows in place where he had been, moving away and to the left, floating along silently. His hope was that she would think he was still in the same place, though if she was able to see magic like he could, like a lot of fairies could, then it wouldn't work. That would also be helpful to know. No matter what happened, he supposed, he would learn something new about the sneaky fairy. Floating on up to her, he placed his hand upon her shoulder. He had meant to say something mean, to scare her, but at the feeling of her warmth rising up through his hand he became momentarily distracted.

"That's… Good. Now nobody will see us, unless we get too close. Now we can be a surprise!"

***There she was, happily supping on the energy of the weird human in yellow, taking just a touch before planning to move on to her next victim when all of a sudden he was startled by something. She looked up as he looked down, the pair of them staring at each other in shock. Well this was embarrassing, and it didn't happen often. She wondered for a moment if the human was some kind of powerful mage, that would explain it. But she had tapped into his well of energy and it wasn't all that impressive. She was also surprised his reactions weren't any faster. With a grin she waved, then took off, wings beating hard to send her flying quickly away under the tables and away from the yellow clad human.

Gremory hid in the shadows under the tables, safely far away from the human who had spotted her. Her tail swished with agitation but she was determined to not let it get to her. In the end there were plenty of other potential victims here tonight. Eyes narrowing, she began peeking at people's auras, picking out the most likely of the people here. She wondered idly if the two fairies were ever going to arrive, though she supposed they could already be here and hiding somewhere.

Arayna tilted her head at her companion, giving him a contemplative look. Why did they not want to be seen, had he not said that they might meet people? Was that now a bad thing. If the idea was not to be seen, she could do that. Not be sensed, that was a different story.

The fairy realized she had never really shown she could hide, was he willing to delay his fun to try to include her. His motivations were incomprehensible to her, after all, they had not known each other for long. This seemed like a lot of trouble to go through. Studying her companion gave no clues to what was going on, not that she expected it to.

“If it is not to be seen, I can make myself invisible. Though if you want to find another way to enter, we can do that too,” Arayna offered her companion. Realizing he may not believe her she focused, bending the light around herself to become invisible. “I cannot hide my aura, so would give you away even with an alternative route. I could wait a while if you want to be that sneaky,” she continued apologetically.

Realizing she could freely study him while invisible, she watched her companion as if she could somehow gain answers to her worries, or just admire the silver.

Hefeydd gave Raya a quick once over, noting that she had changed her clothes and done something with her hair. He hadn't noticed her doing anything, so perhaps she had used magic to change her clothing. What she wore looked a lot like the dress he had made for her, which meant she did like the dress itself but she was choosing to no longer accept it as a gift. He his his frown behind the cloak he held out for her, watching as she took it. He took a small amount of joy in the sight of her wrapping the cloak around herself, but it soured quickly at the thought that it was likely to be discarded as easily as the dress, most likely to be replaced with an imitation. It sparkled prettily though, and watching her enjoyment stirred… He couldn't quite describe what it was stirring within him, and he didn't want to spend too much time thinking about it. He was happy to remain stewing in his own unhappiness right now.

"Get going, yes…" he turned from Raya and looked in the direction they needed to travel. He felt like he was forgetting something, or someone, but he supposed it would come to him in time. Right now, though, it was just up to Raya and himself to enjoy their time at this ball. A brief thought flashed through his mind, the thought that while at the ball she might meet other people and leave him to spend time with them instead, and for some reason this thought caused a momentary chill throughout his body. While normally the cold wouldn't bother him, this felt different. Less like a cold feeling passing through him, really, and more like a warm feeling leaving him. He shook his head, his silver hair swinging to and fro, until his thoughts returned to the matter at hand. He smiled to himself and took off in the direction of the music.

The place this event was happening came into view, a big building with all kinds of windows with lights in them making pretty colours. People were gathered outside, talking, and there were obviously plenty more people inside. Hefeydd hovered in place, in the darkness just outside the a small glowing orb that was lighting a path towards the building. Maybe it was there to stop people from getting lost. He considered for a moment turning invisible, or gathering shadows to obscure himself. But then his thoughts turned to Raya, and he wondered what her plan was to get in. He realized he had never actually seen her hide herself from sight before in any way. He bit his lip and turned to face her, thinking.

"I think we need to find a different way in." he said, and gestured towards the main entrance all the mortals were using. "I think it would be a much better surprise if nobody saw us." He grinned at his companion.

***
Among all the brightly dressed people, laughing and talking with each other, one stood out a little more than the others. Despite the fact that he was covered from head to toe in a garish yellow suit and cloak Granny could tell from his energy that he was a human. He was currently talking loudly with a dwarf and another human, hovering around the tables with all the substances designed to impair judgement. While the human in yellow didn't seem to be partaking, his gaze kept returning to the items on the table and she could feel the desire for them radiating off of him. Floating along, she came up beside his leg, tapping into his energy and draining off just a little.

Arayna gave her companion a bemused expression. Would he have told her this if she had not have asked? Noting that Hed seemed to have made himself comfortable, so would hopefully be content a moment, the fey opened a gait back to her area.
Leaving the portal open, the fairy stepped through the gate. Arayna quickly opened the box that was her closet, easily finding where she had stored her blue dress from Hed. The fairy had accumulated a little outfit around the dress but was always too nervous to wear it; fearing she would somehow ruin it.
Not wanting to be accused of taking "an age," again, the fey quickly changed into it and the slippers she had found to match. The fey wished she had more than ribbon to fashion as jewelry, but decided it was better than nothing.
Stepping back through the portal, she shivered. How had she not realized it was so cold? It must have been because she was moving around. Shivering slightly, the fey resumed her task of grooming. Hovering upside down, she coaxed her hair into a more elaborate style with a few braids, some of which she braided the ribbons through.
Finished Arayna eyed herself in a reflective piece of ice; it was cold. Though she felt she looked nice, it did not seem elegant enough for a formal ball. The fey fell into the trap of her thoughts, should she dress better if she is hanging around Hed? She hoped she had not embarrassed him. Shaking herself from her thoughts, she reminded herself this would have to do. If it was not enough maybe he should have given her time to prepare, rather than sprung it on her.
A faint worry that she was a joke, rather than a novelty, passed her mind. The fey tried to rid herself of this thought, too. No matter what he had helped her and she enjoyed being in his company. If it turned out she was a joke so be it, she often felt like one. Maybe one day she could laugh, too, at her present self. Today she was invited to have fun; there would be time to worry about everything later.
Finished with her task of dressing the fey lazily flew and spun in circles, trying to move about to stay warm. Arayna was seriously debating the merits of using magic to try to warm herself when Hed called out to her. He had been rather generous with time; the fey floated over to him hoping it would be warmer at the ball.
The fact he had a gift was a bigger surprise than the allotted time. A cloak, had he realized she was cold. Come to think of it he did not seem cold, was that something to do with his clothing. Arayna delicately took the cloak, only realizing she was upside down when it fell away from her.
Feeling as if she had been caught doing something foolish she righted herself as she examined the cloak. The looked like it was made out of ice and snow, with a snowflake pattern. It was prettier than anything Arayna had imagined, and here it was a gift for her. Arayna frowned at the cloak briefly for brightening and addressing Hed.
"Thank you, it is amazing, she exclaimed. Wrapping the cloak around herself, she was surprised to find that the ice insulated her against the cold, helping her better tolerate the cold. That had been surprising but made sense really, after all frost protected plants from colder temperatures. Arayna kept herself smiling but likely could not hide some of the sadness. Hed had helped her so much and given her some treasured things, how was she ever supposed to repay him? The novelty or the joke would wear off. "Well should we get going," Arayna heard herself say instead of the myriad of sad thoughts dancing in her mind.

Hefeydd bobbed along in place, remaining still again to consider his companion with serious thought. She was still wearing the same simple clothing she had worn before, when they had found their new friends in that strange forest. He hadn't seen her wearing the dress that he had made for her since then, it was like she was shunning it. Maybe because of the colour, or maybe because Hefeydd had made it himself. He dropped a couple of inches. He had thought it had suited her well, at the time. The colour of the material had been the same as her eyes, and he had created it of the finest spider silk. The more he thought about it, the more her thought that maybe she should dress up for the ball. If there were any other fairies there, or any fey, or if they were even spotted by the foolish mortals then they would need to be looking their best. Hefeydd already knew that he looked fantastic in his beautiful purple robes, so there was no need for him to change. Perhaps he could create for her a new dress, he thought absently, one that would match her wings a little more. Perhaps she wouldn't carelessly toss that dress aside… Thinking about everything else he would need to do tonight, he thought better of creating a whole new outfit for her, though.

"Yes, silly, of course you should dress up! We might meet people!" Hefeydd rolled his eyes, dropping onto his back and floating horizontally in place, staring up at the stars. As he looked at them, not paying attention to what the other fairy might be doing, a thought struck him. He floated a little further away, wanting some privacy to do his work, gathering the magic necessary. The fey lord had implanted a thought in his head not too long ago, something that Hefeydd was now able to recall quite clearly. It didn't take any effort at all to call forth the ice magic, the night was cold as it was so there was little magical effort required. Binding it would be more difficult, especially if he wanted it to last for more than just the one night. He contemplated the best way to do it as his hands worked, forming the patterns and weaving the cloak. In the end, the spell he used was simple, though it would do the job perfectly. He grinned as he returned to an upright position, holding up the finished product. It was a cloak made of snowflakes, bound to remain intact as long as his fairy companion owned it. If she tossed it away like the dress then it would melt away eventually.

"I have a surprise for you, Raya!" he called out, holding out the cloak proudly, looking around to find his companion.

***
Two lovers were hidden in a dark alcove outside of the main hall where all the guests were flocking. From inside Granny could hear the buzz of conversation and the music produced by whoever was playing inside. She could have her fill tonight, it seemed, as she could feel the excitement building among all those gathered in this place. It seemed to her like they were celebrating something, enjoying themselves and letting loose their deepest desires. Whatever it was that they were celebrating must have been tense indeed for them to be reacting so freely. Well, the reasons behind the ball didn't matter. What did matter was the morsels she spied. Flapping her leathery wings, she approached quietly from above, descending carefully within the shadows to avoid being seen. She could feel the lust pulsing off of them in waves, and with a gentle touch she was able to siphon some of this energy. A pulse of energy washed through her, sending tingles from the base of her skull, all the way down her spine to the tip of her tail. She was tempted to remain here, to take from these young lovers all that she could, but there was no need to be greedy. She had all night, after all.

Arayna studied her companion as the question seemed to give him pause. Maybe knowing about balls was such a basic thing, it seemed strange to question it. Arayna reached for her braid out of impulse but found it absent. That is right; she had decided to put her hair in two buns today. Moving her hand up, she found a loose strand to twirl.
Searching her memory, she tried to recall if she had ever told Hed about the state of her memories. It would probably make things easier; she seemed to ask things that caught him off guard a lot. A sinking feeling filled the pit of her stomach, what if that novelty was why, Hed the important First Night, allowed her to tag along.
If that were all that bound them, the novelty would eventually wear off. Would it not be better to tell him about her memory, dispell the novelty now instead of becoming even more accustomed to his company.

Sadnesss washed over Arayna, so what would she do. Her days following him around were numbered, but Arayna could not imagine trying to figure out fairy society on her own.
Her companion was answering the question, that was random to him, pulled her from her thoughts. To have fun. That, too, should be a simple concept. Really if what she read about fairies she true, that should be something she innately sought; even at the price of others at times. Arayna's brow furrowed since escaping had she engaged in any activity that was solely to have fun. Arayna bright, smiling as she watched her companions antics. Hed was so sure of his self in flying; it was something Arayna enjoyed watching and was envious of. The fey decided she could stew over all this later. Hed had gone out of his way to lead her here to have fun, so the least she could do is try. Surely she could follow his lead in what fun was.

"I think we deserve some fun, Arayna gave in the way of answer. To say she was ready to have fun would have been a lie; she still was not sure what that entailed. Arayna could vaguely remember being dressed up and pretending to dance and this that had something to do with balls. The fey had not dressed up for their venture, having no idea what was going on other than to follow. The last time that had happened they had ended up before a figure that assigned them a mission, so dressing in formal wear to follow had not crossed the feys mind.

"Can I go as I am or do I need to dress up to go to the ball Arayna inquired not wanting to embarrass her companion, and be laughed at again. That had happened, too, the last time she had followed him.

Her question caused Hefeydd to stare blankly at her, floating in place, bobbing up and down fractionally as he tried to work out if the other fairy was being serious or not. Why were they going to a ball? Why were they going to a ball?! What reasons were there to go to balls held by mortals, other than to cause havoc, sew chaos, make mischief and enjoy their frustration? He sighed, realizing the other fairy might be trying to test him, to provoke him in some way. Yes, that must be it. No other reason was acceptable. The other fairy was still trying to make him slip up. Well she was going to be disappointed, just like she always was! He was far too smart for her, yes he was.

"I am going to the ball to have fun," he said, rolling his eyes as he spoke, "and I am bringing you to have fun too, silly." He chuckled and allowed himself to drop suddenly through the air, tumbling until he was far below her before righting himself and beginning to fly again. With a laugh he came back up and circled her, quickly. "Are you ready to have some fun, Raya?"

***Granny sighed, opening up the portal she chose to travel by close to the cathedral. She knew where the two fairies were headed and instead of trying to follow the two of them she had decided to play it smart. There was no way she was going to be able to keep up with them, and besides, she could have a little fun of her own without them before they even arrived. Hed had been so excited when he had invited her, insisting she keep it a secret from the other fairy. She had obliged, not knowing why he was so fascinated with the scrawny fairy. She suspected he didn't know, either. Poor guy. Giggling to herself, she took to her wings and began scouting out the crowed, looking for a quick meal.

Arayna tried to keep pace with her companion, somewhat annoyed with herself. She, definitely, was a silly fair to be so willing to follow Hed, despite not knowing where they were going. Arayna had no idea why she enjoyed the other fey’s company but knew she enjoyed it to be willing to follow him blindly. He seemed to enjoy her company well enough, after all, he invited her and even made sure she could keep up with him. Arayna was still working on her ability to fly, she had difficulty keeping the same pace as Hed.
Arayna watched his wings twitch, smiling at Hed as he faced her. He was rather excited about, whatever he had decided to involve them in. Faintly she thought she heard music and began to feel excited herself. Were they going to some sort of fairy event?
The fairy known as Raya, tilted her head in confusion. Had he said ball? Like a formal ball? Of course, quarrying anything from Arayna’s memory, often led to more confusion than it dispelled. How did she know what a ball was? Or maybe she did not, a ball did not seem like the type of thing Hed would be excited about. He would not be excited to dance with her, would he?
“A ball?” Arayna repeated, drawing out the word in a clear question. Her cheeks flushed as she chased away remnants of her previous thought. “Why are we going to a ball?” she added, finding it difficult to rein in her line of thinking. Was she weak to charm magic despite allegedly being a fairy, why was she so willing to follow him and so excited at the idea of dancing with him? What was wrong with her?

Hefeydd hummed to himself as he flew quickly through the night, his good mood translating into lots of loops and turns, circling around occasionally to check that Raya was still following. He had been hoping to surprise her with the event he had planned tonight, after hearing some of the other fairies talking about it. He had immediately thought about the fun they could have, and so had told Raya that they had needed to leave, immediately, to go somewhere important! Since the ball would end, eventually, they did of course need to leave immediately if they had any hopes of getting their fill of fun. While the mortal's little celebration might not have been especially important to anyone of note, like Hefeydd himself or the other fairies, the mortals seemed to think it was important. He grinned, whistling to himself as he slowed his pace to allow Raya to catch up with him.

From what the other fairies had been saying, laughing about it really, the mortals were having a ball of some kind to celebrate squishing some bugs. It didn't seem like something that needed celebrating but Hefeydd supposed the mortals needed something to occupy themselves with. It must have been an especially dull month for them, and they needed something to make it more interesting. He held out no hopes for their ball. In comparison to fey balls it was bound to be dull. Until he and Raya arrived, that was. They would take it upon themselves to make it more interesting. He spun in place to face Raya, wings twitching with pent up excitement. Any moment now they would be arriving, and he supposed he should let her know now, he could faintly hear music in the distance and that meant she would be able to as well. Time to tell her the surprise!

"Raaaayyyyaaaa!" he called, "we're going to a baaall!"
