Ryker never saw himself as the sort to be a father to anyone, let alone someone that would one day be an heir. Yet here they were, him and Loralei, soon to have a child months away from now. This was certainly one hell of a surprise, but he loved her and he knew that he would love their baby boy or girl as well. Perhaps because of his panther side and being protective of his mate and cub. He looked her over as to make sure that his rowdy self hadn’t harmed her at all, and after she reassured him, Ryker calmed down some more. He scoffed at the mentioning of their child being aloof; he was guessing there would have gotten it from their mother if that was the case.
“Maybe. Wonder what kind of trouble he or she will cause us in the long run.”He wished he could be shocked to learn that certain people didn’t have the reaction that the rest of the party had; Loralei’s mother never did like seeing her daughter happy and only thought of herself, and Jae was an old, pervy dumbass. But he ignored them for the most part and embraced Edrahil with open arms. The old lord would be dealt with soon enough if Ryker had his way as he stared with hungry intention lingering in his mind. But his attention went to Lora and sat down next to her.
“I won’t worry so much then. I trust you.” He only had a glass of wine and even then barely touched it. His mind was busy with thoughts of how the child would come out, if and when he would teach them how to shift if possible and how he wanted them to have what he didn’t when he was a young child. He wanted them to grow up happy and loved and the thoughts made him a little teary eyed. Ryker immediately regained his composure and looked on happily as they accepted the congratulations.
“Looked like your plan worked just the same, darling”, he spoke, eying that fool Jae.
“I like Amelia and Noah for starters. I could make out a list of names if you wish”, he spoke half-jokingly. But seriously, with all the excitement, he really could have spent the next few days looking for the perfect name for their child.
“What about you? Have some in mind?”

Lora blushed a bit at Ryker and her confidence slipped a bit but she squealed as he picked her up and spun her. She clung to him tightly as she laughed. “We’re having a child.” She took his hand and it to her belly. It was just a small difference but she wanted him to know it was real. “I’m fine and so is the baby.” She chuckled a bit.
“So an aloof hellraiser?” She chuckled a bit before taking his face and kissed him soundly. Their happiness was making everyone else happy… Well, most people. Her mother Syviis was throwing daggers. However, Edrahil ran over and hugged both of them. He was just as excited as they were. He kissed the top of Loralei’s head and looked back at everyone.
“Bring out the drinks! We must celebrate at once! The Desdemona Heir requires his mother to rest though.” Lora laughed at her father as he yelled and sat her down.
“Please, I’m fine… There’s no need to be delicate with me. The healer told me this morning that I am a super healthy pregnant lady. As long as I watch myself my pregnancy should go smooth and we’ll have a healthy baby six months from now.” Her eyes sought for her husband’s. “So try not to worry alright? We’ll be fine!”
Jae smashed his fist on the table and it actually startled Loralei. The elderly lord made his way out but Lora could hardly care as she heard everyone else giving them their congratulations. “So… Now I guess we have to come up with some names don’t we?” Lora just wanted to make sure they were healthy and happy… Their future looked so bright now and she was looking forward to being a better mother than she had.

It was something unexpected between them as the time went by; they were nothing more than friends and that of a protector and protected at first. Their marriage was simply a strategical move made by Loralei’s father as a means to keep her from getting into the sweaty hands of the unworthy, many that damn Jae. Slowly though, they began to get closer than they’ve ever had before. It was strange yet wondrous at the same time for not only her but Ryker as well. Little by little, he exposed more of himself to her and it was becoming obvious that he loved her as more than just a friend.
They were called in to attend a ball and obvious he had to squeeze into something that he’d considered a monkey suit. But he had to dress and look his best with his new position and he did so. Lora, in the meanwhile, looked stunning as she held onto his arm. Their news as a married couple was sure to get a rise out of some people, which they were counting on. Honestly, he wanted Jae to be there and say one little thing, then his face could meet with the werepanther’s fist. Such a thought made him snicker a little as he escorted her around, shaking wrists with the other party goers up to when Edrahil came up to them.
“Yeah, I feel eyes on us, but there’s too many of them to look at and get a good idea of those we have to worry about.” Ryker looked to Lora before nodding in agreement. He trusted her well to have a good idea of what would do the trick. He stood beside her as she confidently gave her small speech, and didn’t mask his proudness in the way she did it. She was getting comfortable now dealing with crowds and taking control.
He was especially interested in the bit of the announcement she wanted to make; it made him think that it was her plan to get a rouse out of their enemies. And the news she shared was…jaw-dropping to say the least. Why, if it was really true, he would have fainted at the thought of becoming a father. Him? The rascal that used to terrorize the streets and was the top henchmen of a powerful lord? Either way, he smiled at her while he looked through the crowd, and noticed some unsavory looks.
Bingo.
He looked back over to his wife and kissed her cheek. Going to hug her, Rkyer nuzzled his head against her neck, listening to her soft heartbeat in its rhythm but then something else came to his ear. It was much softer but…after a little bit there was no mistaking it.
SHE REALLY WAS PREGNANT!He quickly pulled away enough to look her in the eyes, showing that he had thought it was just a quick idea on her part.
“Real…real…really? You are…having a child?” He held a mixed look of shock and happiness before he held onto her and swung her a bit before remembering that she was carrying and quickly put her down.
“Are you alright? Did I hurt you or the baby?” Ryker forgot about the crowd, or her family then. All he could see was Loralei and the unborn child in her.
Oh gods, I’m gonna be a father. Our child is gonna be a hellraiser”, he cracked a joke before kissing her.

They spent the rest of the bath in utter bliss with each other. Slowly Ryker courted her and slowly they fell in love. The month of the ball came for them to announce themselves as a legitimate married couple. Loralei was frightened as the situation with Jae still hadn’t come to a head. The old man was laying low and the other families were watching to see what would happen.
Loralei stood next to Ryker as they entered the ballroom where the party was going on. She could see Edrahil mingling with other people. Her small arm was around Ryker’s muscular one. She looked spectacular with her hair done up and fancy little party dress. It was definitely the sort made to make people jealous. A particular tool that was being used to get those angry about Loralei’s marriage to come out.
They greeted many people and soon Edrahil came over. “We need something that will really get them going… I just don’t know what.” This was a way to introduce them as a couple yes but primarily it was to draw out those that were an enemy. Loralei nodded to her father and she looked up at Ryker.
“I think I might have a way.” She took a glass once everyone was seated and let the bell-like sound draw attention to her. “Thank you for coming to my husband and mine’s wedding celebration even though it was delayed. We deeply appreciate the warm welcome and gifts that you all have brought. I have one tiny announcement to make for the evening.”
She took a deep breath and smiled at Ryker. “I was told earlier this morning that Ryker and I will be having our first born in a few short months.” Her father’s mouth dropped wide open and Loralei gave him and smile. She had only just found out and had been trying to find the words to tell Ryker… But this was also the perfect idea for drawing out more ire and they could protect her if need be. There was clapping and cheering though she could feel the icy glare from her own mother.

Ryker tilted his head, unsure of what to make of what she said.
“My own…walk…” He stifled a laugh, but it wasn’t held back for long before he burst out. Everything else seemed logical so he just left that be. He supposed that it didn’t really matter how she did it- it was the fact that she could do so freely that was astonishing. He had to give her her dues about that.
“Yeah, we can do that. Also heard of some boats that offer rides for couples and such. Guess that would also make for a good opportunity for the two of us”, he explained as he watched Lora swell up with excitement. It pleased him to see her so happy about this turn of events; her father had been right as always. It shouldn’t have come as a shock honestly. This family was just full of surprises.
His hands worked her body as he felt her craving his touch. His fingertips felt like they were on fire as they brushed against her soft skin.
“See, how is that weird? At least you don’t collect teeth or something. Now that would be strange. Tea? Well, I would probably just drink it all, but to each their own.” He felt her react to his nips and stole a few more before she turned to face him. He went to snicker at the time where she got in major trouble because of him when she planted a kiss against him. In turn, he returned it in full earnest, finally getting used to the taste of her lips.
“You do know that you deserved it, just like how I deserved that week off.” “I didn’t torment you. I merely did my job; everything else was purely coincidence. Yeah, that’s it, coincidence.” He laughed again before kissing her once more and snuggled his arms around her. His face came down to her lovely locks and eyes closed briefly as he thought. The last thing he wanted was a loveless marriage where Loralei would be trapped in like her mother. But she wasn’t heartless and at least put forth an effort as he did.
“All that matters is that we try as hard as possible. I don’t care who provides us help, I would welcome it with open arms, to be honest.” He smiled at her as he felt more of her warmth engulfing his body. It felt nice and inviting.
“You really are going to turn into a lobster, my darling wife.”

Lora put a finger to the end of her chin as she thought. Her eyes rolled from one side to the other as she let out a ‘hmmm’ as she thought. “I guess… I just know.” It wasn’t the best answer. “I know the sound of when you move, you definitely have your own type of walk, you smell like well you… No one else smells like you… Also, your eyes have a tendency for me to notice them in a crowd. I’ve just always known when you were somewhere with me. You are one of the few things that were constant in my life and pleasant at that I guess.”
When the news of a trip up top came up her eyes got a bit brighter and she looked like she was full of excitement. “That sounds fun! I’ve always wanted to play against strangers. It’s easy to get everyone’s tells when I’ve played them hundreds of times.” It was a chance to learn more about the people on the outside and Ryker would be there with her so she knew she would be safe.
She was lulling back and forth now as he continued to his massage. Her eyes closed just a hair but she was still conscious enough to answer him. “I drink it. Normally I have it with my lunch. I have so much that if I didn’t drink it I think Father would throw a fit.” There was a chuckle as she thought about it. “Abed’s teas are the most interesting to me with the spices. Father brought me home some last year when he had gone for a business deal.” Her eyes flickered up to his and she smiled lazily. “I would love to show you.”
Lora smirked a bit at him. “Go ahead and watch me all you like. I mean what could it hurt?” She jumped a bit when he nipped at her and laughed as she turned around on his lap wrapping her arms around his neck. “You knew I was a trouble maker at least a little bit. Mischievous when no one is looking. You’ve caught me more than once doing things I shouldn’t have. I will never forget the time you got me grounded though.” She shook her head at him before going in and kissing his lips. “I didn’t speak to you for a week. Though if I recall… You said that was the best week ever because it was quiet.”
The half-elf flicked his nose softly. “With all the tormenting we’ve done to each other… It’s no wonder why the house staff is so amused by these turn of events.” She chuckled. “It was the maids’ suggestion to take a bath together. Said it is quality time alone that isn’t in bed.” There was a blush across her cheeks. “Because honestly, I don’t think I know what to do… and my parents aren’t exactly a model marriage so I thought I would ask around. I don’t want what my parents have… and I know you don’t either.”

Ryker stuck his tongue at her as she splashed him with water.
“Big deal. At least you knew that I was looking after you and not anyone else. All that mattered was that I was able to conceal myself from those that wish you harm.” Rolling his eyes, he let her continue with her little banter- it wasn’t like he wasn’t used to it anyway. No matter how sneaky he tried to be, she would always find a way to notice him. Whether it was by seeing his shadow or noticing his scent, or if she heard him, he couldn’t tell what it was that she used to be aware of his position.
“Go on and tell me what led you to know when I’m following you”, he asked, genuine curiosity lingering in his tone.
He knew that Lora didn’t get out much from the house and that those of the house staff cared for her so he was hardly surprised to hear that she had learned things like cards from them.
“Guess I should take you on one of the boats sometime and test our luck.” He had long been done with merely washing her and was massaging her form much deeper than before without realizing it. But at this point, even if he had, Ryker wouldn’t have stopped unless she wanted him to.
“Do you drink any of it, or are they still intact. Anyway, I don’t think it’s weird. You can show me when you want.” Ryker wasn’t a fan of neither of those lords- he already had more than enough reasons to hate Jae and though he didn’t meet with Ralos, he knew of the tales behind him enough to know he was a bastard.
“You know that it only means I’ll have to watch you more carefully and sleep with one eye open.” Once he finished, he decided to nip at her neck a few times in play while keeping up with the caresses.

It intrigued her but she didn’t press into it much. She could stomach most of what her father did but past that she was still soft to it all. Lora knew little about Ryker but she did know that floral things weren’t really his forte so she was grateful when he didn’t complain about the water. “Oh?” She began to pinch lightly. “Be careful what you insult.” She moved her hands like lobster claws and laughed before going back to washing him.
It was weird but pleasant as he met her to help her relax against him. A part of her wondered just how weird it was for him too. They had been intimate a few times since they were married but still, the awkwardness of their situation was there. Lora knew that it would remain there for some time and that eventually, it would fade away.
“If you aren’t careful your face will stick that way.” She teased him as she watched his face scrunch up. A chill went up her spine as he started to bath her arms and neck. It wasn’t that she didn’t like it, it was the complete opposite. The weird feeling and the fact she liked it was conflicting to her. The half-elf leaned her head off to the side a bit so he could get her neck a bit better while they spoke.
She listened to his hobbies and splashed water at him when he complained about her knowing where he was. “You are easy to learn when you do it all the time.” There was a chuckle as her eyes looked up into his for a moment.
“Besides hiding you said?” She contemplated it a bit before chuckling. “I’m actually quite good at cards. Not all of the card games but some. The house staff taught me quite a bit but I’m not really allowed up on the riverboats without supervision. I like to read in the gardens and I can sew pretty well too. The house staff taught me a whole bunch of the games up top but like I said I like the card games the best. When Father goes on business into the main city I go with him to look at the rivers though. I’m also quite proud of my tea collection if that isn’t weird. I’ve collected tea from a lot of places. Father normally brings me back some. I got nifty little boxes for all of it. I could show you if that’s something you would be interested in… Though most think its a weird hobby.”
Lora thought about it at first before a smirk came to her face. “I also used to pelt rocks at Jae’s manor a few streets down. Creepy old man. I know he put a bid on me to be his wife. He was always watching me even when I was younger… Which is creepier than he is. There was also the time that I cut all of Lord Ralos' horse's mane off because he hit one of our house staff. I do a lot when you aren't looking. You would be surprised."

“Eh, it comes with the territory honestly. Should have seen me when I underwent my first interrogation.” It hadn’t been long after he was a made man that he was tested with getting some information from one of the workers of a dirty casino that had tried to rip one of her father’s most trusted men off. He gotten sick halfway through but still had to complete smashing off the man’s fingernails. Of course, he wouldn’t give that vivid image to her mind. Climbing into the waters, he pretty much forgot about that conversation and relaxed in the calming waters. Under normal conditions, he wasn’t the sort to add flora to his bath water, but it was a Lora’s thing and he was trying to do more things with her so he could live with it.
He let out a snide chuckle,
“Good thing you don’t have claws like them too.” The intention was loosing on from his end and he leaned back against the rim of the tub and eyed her as she approached. It was a strange feeling to have her wash his body, strange but good. Even when he was covered with blood (albeit not his own), it didn’t phase her what so ever. He watched her body as she started to turn and instinctively he moved upwards, readying for her form to lay onto him. His hands fell onto her waist and helped direct her before one went to rest on her hip.
“Not my sort of thing, but it is relaxing I’ll admit.” The werepanther did scrunch up his nose with this whole daisy bit. Ryker could only guess that it was either payback for the lobster joke or she was just having some fun.
He could have gone with either answer.
For as long as the two knew the other, they didn’t actually know about each other. He never really thought about how small she was in comparison, or how soft she felt. And while he had to track down her scent and knew it by heart, he hadn’t really noticed how much like camellia it was. It was….intriguing to him as he started to bath her arms and neck as gentle as he could muster.
“Depends. Sometimes I go on hunts around the forests, other times I could be reading”, he replied as he moved to wash her front. The latter had been especially hard for him at first, not having the formal teachings other children had. It took some of the staff members here to help teach him how to read and write which turned into an accomplishment he cherished.
“I’m also keeping an eye on you, though it's hard to be discreet when you know that I’m around damn near always. Aside from that, I do go up and play cards on the riverboats and fish.” Taking a deep breath, he could again engulf her scent and it suited her well. His chest rose beneath her and hands went to not only bathe, but massage as well.
“And what do you do when you aren’t looking at flowers or daydreaming.”

“Good idea. A little intimidation never hurt anyone… Well relatively speaking.” There was some dark humor that slipped from Edrahil’s lips as he watched Ryker at work. “She’s always loved the rivers here… Figured it would be a good start if she thought you paid attention to her likes. Not that I’m saying you don’t know but she is quirky so,” his voice quieted as he shrugged his shoulders. “I know you do. If anyone can keep Loralei safe from danger it’s you.” Always had been.
Lora was waiting for him as he came into the room. She sunk down a little bit more as if to hide herself while he closed the door. That awkward hello got him a giggle as she relaxed and grabbed some soap and a cloth. “You look like you’ve been through the wringer even though I know that’s not your blood.”
Finally, he got in the tub after she had watched him undress. It was odd but this was something that the housekeepers had suggested. Something they did with their own spouses. Lora blushed once more. “Shouldn’t pick on me, Ryker.” There was a bit of a whine in her voice as she finally moved herself closer to him. Lifting herself out of the water a bit more she worked on getting all of the blood off of him. It was quite the chore to do and it was amazing considering it wasn’t even his.
Once he was clean she locked eyes with him for only a moment before she turned around and slid onto his lap. Her legs bent allowing her to slid down just enough so her head was resting against his shoulder. “This herbal soak is one of my favorites. It makes your skin soft and helps calm you after a stressful day. Has a whole lot of flowers from Jasumin Lake in it…” She picked up a whole daisy-like flower and slid it behind his ear even if it was soaked.
Still, the flower appeared to be at least firm enough to keep its form. There was a chuckle from her as she closed her eyes. She could hear the wind whipping through the underbelly. As unnerving as it was to some, it looked like it honestly calmed her down. “What do you do when you aren’t maiming others and showing muscle anyway?”

It seemed like time was up for their little friend though it was going to have to end one way or another for the poor sap. By now he probably recovered enough to hear the boss judge his fate and was fearful for his life. Ryker held little sympathy for him- he chose this life, and this is how it ended for many. One day, even he would succumb to it, but he would make sure that it wouldn't happen for a very long time. He heard Lora speak of taking a bath and he nodded, though there was something in how she presented it especially since her father didn't hear it. He felt her warm lips pressed against his cheek and watched her before she exited.
His attention then turned to Edrahil while his foot was still resting on the lad's neck,
"Sure thing. Can you hand me that knife? I have something in mind for Jae for later, just in case." As gruesome as it was, that old man would have to get the message one way or another and it took a bit of time before Ryker was sated with his work.
"Made a bigger hole in him than I thought." He looked at the bloody chest with a now gaping hole in the center as he held onto his prize- the heart.
"I know someone that will keep it fresh until Jae decided to do something. Then he will receive it." Although he would have much rather done it now, they didn't need to go to war necessarily. If the message was crystal clear and he ceased any more tomfoolay, then all would be well.
"Boat rides? Not really my thing, but it's a good start to get us more comfortable with all this." Using a worn rag, he wiped off the excess blood from his hands before patting his boss on the shoulder on his way out.
"She will be safe from him, I can guarantee that." He closed the door behind him and sent someone to go ahead and take care of the body before it started to reek through the rest of the house. From there, he decided to go and see Loralei. It was only until he had reach the door to her bathing room that he figured out what she had proposed. Really? He couldn't…imagine…that she would have suggested something like that. He never heard of couples bathing with each other, but then again it wasn't the cup of tea he was familiar with either. His hand went to the knob and slowly twisted it. The creaking as it made way gave away his position like a sore thumb and he step through to quickly shut it from possible prying eyes.
"Uh…hi." Ryker gave Lora an awkward wave as he approached her with care. Despite having already seen her naked more times than he had thought he would in his life, this time seemed a bit more different, more intimate he supposed as he started to get undressed. First his shirt and then his boots and trousers before climbing into the waters and sat opposite of her. Bits of blood were washing away from him as the soothing warm felt wonderful. Reclining a bit, his eyes closed briefly as he thought about the boat rides her father mentioned.
"Sorry it took a while, but you have my undivided attention, if you wish", he spoke, one eye opened up and watched her.
"You keep looking like that, you gonna end up like a lobster. Don't think red looks too well on your face", he joked. Not that he could blame her for it though.

What the moron didn’t know was that Loralei had been trained somewhat to defend herself in certain situations. Most didn’t seem to notice that she carried a dagger hidden on her person. Edrahil made sure his daughter wouldn’t be a victim and at the very least she would hurt the person pursuing her. A chuckle had left his lips at the sight of his little girl beating the man with a platter. “At least you are using your training… Though the dagger would have worked better don’t you think sweetheart?”
“Well, I didn’t have time to pull it out,” Lora puffed her face up at him. “Platter seemed like the better call. I didn’t want blood on my dress…” Edrahil was amused that was what she had been worried about as Ryker put his boot over his head.
“No, I’m done with that fool. We know all he has or enough. Lora can you leave the room so we can give this man a proper Desdemona send off?” Lora tilted her head and nodded as she walked up and over the man’s back hearing his grunt.
“I’m going to take a bath,” the way her words lingered to Ryker spoke of an invitation at the very least as she kissed his cheek and made her way out of the room. The invitation had been whispered so Edrahil could barely hear it.
He didn’t know what it was for but the father shrugged. “Go spend time with her after this. We can at least give him a good send off and have one of the lower grunts do the disposal. I don’t know what she told you though so don’t be worried.” Though knowing Lora, it was probably something she didn’t want Edrahil to overhear anyways. “There is a family friend up on the east end… Does little boat rides for couples. Should take her on it. She’s always loved the rivers in Jayou. Maybe that would be a good start for you two? Would also give me time to try and figure out what to do with Jae and on the surface I don’t think he would do anything if you two went out in public together.”
Meanwhile Lora was setting up the bath and she was blushing wondering if he would join her. She sunk into the herbal water and let the flowers and leaves surround her. It was a good and healthy bath that she happened to enjoy whenever the shipments of herbs came in. Her blonde hair was pulled up away from her and her bi-colored eyes were glued to the door. She could hear people on the outside and could listen to the footsteps but she wanted one of the sets to be Ryker. Though the thought brought redness to her cheeks.

Blood and death didn't come naturally like how it was suppose to for Ryker, given his heritage and everything. He had no pack of his own and there weren't any panthers like him in these parts, so he had to gradually work on both his hunting and getting used to the family business in a hurry. Fortunately he was a great killer only when it was truly required for him. The same could be said about his methods in getting information out of stooges, which had to do from learning from Edrahil. Survival was the key in Jayou, no matter if you were lucky to be brought into the wealth or if you were in the slums. Both scenarios helped to steel him greatly and before he knew it, he was the one cracking skulls. Still, it wasn't to say that he was merciless, but he could be when it came to the wellbeing of this family.
Jae, no matter his status, would feel such cruelty if he had plotted against Lora or Edrahil. He thought of him as a stupid old man, but the possible depths of his stupidity was the real trouble if he sought for "revenge".
He wasn't keen on just how long they had been at work; it was fairly usual for these sorts of things to go on for hours without end, only feeling it when the deed was finished. The man seemed as though they would let up, but that sort of thinking had lead to his current folly. Perhaps it was a lapse in judgment, but before Ryker knew it, the fool had the audacity to break free and go after Lora. He was about to retaliate when she beat him to the punch. Sighing, he didn't let him have any time to recover as his heel was pressed against his throat, slowly starting to crush it.
"Don't worry about it, his carcass will soon be floating up the river. I'll get you a new platter", he spoke in a controlled voice despite his actions. He suppose that he would have to follow her father's advice and start gifting her with things, at least to help start off their relationship. That and being…romantic, something that was still out of custom from him and made him slightly wince, but not enough to be noticed easily.
"Depends on if your father is satisfied, or not. I can probably still go another hour or so if there's anything he thinks he's still hiding from us. "
Author: Loralei, Posted: Wed Jan 16, 2019 10:39 AM, Post Subject: Inheritance [P/R]
Edrahil smirked. “In a situation that goes smooth yes… You are supposed to do those things before marriage. However, you and Lora didn’t really get that chance. Outings, candy, flowers, and giving her things she likes goes a long way. I can see her effort from her side. She brings you all sorts of things to make sure you are in the best shape you can be. I will admit that she has never seen that from her mother or myself but she has probably caught on to it being that way from watching the house help. If there’s anything that girl has always been good at it… It’s watching others.”
Once into the room, they went to business with the man. Ryker was his top enforcer and it showed with how perfect his technique was. “Aye, Lady Sonya from House Covette. Lora reminds me a lot of her now… Funny how that works eh?”
Edrahil crossed his arms. “If I so much as think he is moving against Lora I will make sure he is a dead old man.” The father was truly protective of his daughter. Together the two men began what would become hour long torture for the man in the chair. Both were brutal in their own way but to protect Loralei they would have to do what came all too natural to them. This wasn’t an area where normal noble houses were. This was a series of syndicates waging war for control. There were of course alliances and that part didn’t change.
Lora held the platter to her as she watched both men drink the tea she had brought. “It’s no problem. I just thought you both were working really hard and could use a break. You’ve been in here for hours.” She offered them both a smile. Loralei had learned from an early age to ignore the things she saw because in Jayou they were normal. She also knew the difference between Jayou and other places. The hierarchy in Jayou was something taken by force and that’s all there was too it.
Somehow the man in the chair had managed to get loose and lunged at Lora who had gotten what seemed to be all too close. Instead of panic or fear in the girl, she took the platter and smacked his head with it rather good. All of the trauma to the man’s body was finally hitting him as he convulsed on the floor. “He bent the good silver…” Loralei had a frown on her face. “Did you find out what you needed too?” She was all too used to it, it seemed. However, it didn’t seem like the man was dead just yet.

It never really occurred to Ryker of how marriages worked out. The only real experience he has seen was that of Edrahil’s to Syviis and aside from making sure that he treated Loralei better, there wasn’t the slightly clue on how to go beyond that in the least.
“Courting? Doesn’t that really happen before the marriage part?” He gave his boss a side glance before shrugging.
“I suppose getting her things like flowers and stuff?” He never had to worry about these things before, but then again, it was all still too new for the werepanther. His mind went elsewhere as he was led to their daily dealing, which today brought to them a lowly grunt from another family, one that was particularly peeved at his union.
Seeing the tortured man, Ryker seemly look at him without a second thought. Nor did he mind the scent of blood and the muffled screams that reach his ears. This was, after all, their business and he hadn’t winced at these scenes since he was fifteen. At least this fellow wasn’t being carved alive, just missing a few fingers.
“That much of the story, I didn’t know about”, he spoke as he removed the gag and paid more attention to Edrahil than the man who was now pleading for his life. Then again, it would make sense for him not to talk about some woman he had once loved in front of his wife and daughter…might be a conflict of interest.
With all that screaming, he had wished to shove the gag back into his mouth, but they needed him still to reveal what Jae was scheming.
“He’d best just leave well enough alone; if he touches so much as a strain of hair on her, he will be a dead old man.” His eyes stared harshly at his captive before he took one of the daggers and plunged it into the middle of the man’s hands. He gripped roughly at the now howling man’s head and brought it close to his face.
“Start…talking.” Ryker wasn’t known for his patience when it came to interrogating and in the next few hours, he made his life a living hell. He had lost track of time as the slow and painful bloodshed continued and he milked as much information as he possibly could. When he could smell a lie, the punishment grew worse yet he made sure to not strike at vital organs or points where death could occur. His ear twitched when the door opened and he could smell his wife coming in, ceasing in the torture for now. It was unfitting to continue such actions with her present, at least for now.
“Thank you.” Ryker got up and took one of the glasses. There was some blood in his shirt with more of it on his hands than anything but he sipped on the drink. The thug’s pleas wouldn’t do him any good- the best he could hope for was that he spilled everything and then was given a quick death. Things would only get worse for him if he didn’t. It was that very reason that he didn’t speak against him when pleading to Loralei, who probably wouldn’t help even if she could. She knew well of this side of the business and how necessary it was.

Lora gave him a smirk as he spoke to her. Permission? Maybe but still he was so tired that she forgave him for it. Still, it looked like he had paid attention enough to know what they would be doing next. However, she was right that he hadn’t slept through all of it. That was just like the family enforcer, always ready.
There was a collective sigh of relief from not only Lora but also from the family as well. They had no idea what the meeting had been for today. It could have been bad or it could have been good. One could never tell when it came to the family. Lora looped her arm with Ryker and gave him an encouraging smile. This was their job now and they would both have to do better. A flame was sparked in Loralei and that was to learn what her father had been trying to teach her. At least… she would try harder.
A few weeks went by and Edrahil was walking with Ryker to go see a little problem child. “So have you thought about how to win Lora yet? You two will have to court each other now. I see the effort but I know that both of you haven’t ever been in this situation before.” That was part of being in this family being about to be so happy about something else while about to do something dark.
In the dark and dreadful room they entered was a muscular man tied to a chair. He had fingers missing that had looked to have been cut off and he was gagged. “I was in love before Syviis but her family owned a mine and the other woman’s family was a rather poor noble house. For the family as my father would say. It’s gotten me my daughter though.” Edrahil offered up the tools as they ungagged the man.
“I’m telling you I don’t know anything about what Jae is doing,” for as big of a man as he was this one was howling and screaming his head off.
“Funny, I told my people not to tell you who it was we were looking for information on.” Edrahil motioned his head to Ryker. “Get the information out of him. Jae is pretty sore about Lora. I don’t intend on her being used by him to start a war down here.” It wasn’t safe to speak about plans in front of those you intended to keep alive which meant one thing and the thug they were beating knew it too.
After a few hours of this torture, the door opened and Loralei came in. With her foot, she shut the door. She avoided the blood on her skirts almost like she had done it before. “I brought you some tea. You’ve been in here a while.” She offered up the two glasses to her father and husband.
“You need to get help. Look what they are doing to me,” the coward was crying for Lora’s help.
There was pity on her face for a moment. “Why would I do that?” She shook her head when it was obvious the pity wasn’t her feeling sorry for him.

“Don’t be silly, I’ve cared about you since before it was my mission to protect you.” He cocked his head to the side a little before giving her a smile. Not too many people aside from her could see this side of him, else his reputation could go down the drain. He didn’t blame her for thinking that way, but unlike a good deal of people around, he genuinely cared about her and her family. Well, most of them anyway. He still didn’t like her mother, but as long as she didn’t get in their way, he would tolerate her as much as he usually did. His arm wrapped around Loralei’s body, though touching her like this still felt a bit off but in time he would grow used to it. He was sure that they would be happy together, just take it one day at a time. Slowly Ryker felt himself travel down the same sleepy path that his new wife had stumbled onto and he sank comfortably into the bed and drifted off.
The werepanther felt her warmth up until she escaped him, which stirred him a bit, but he continued to sleep. Rolling over to the other side, he was half awake when the knock came and he listened in on the conversation. While he would rather deal with this later, there was no point in staying in bed all day if they were needed. One eye opened up and glanced dazedly at Loralei.
“I wasn’t spying on you, Lora. That would imply that I didn’t have permission to look at you.” He sat up and yawned with arms stretched up and out. Rubbing his eye, Ryker started to become more awake and looked around the room for some pants.
“No, I heard plenty enough. Probably going to make the announcement of our union to the rest of the family.” After they got dressed and headed off for the parlor, he could see that everyone involved with the Desdemona Family was here and felt her standing behind him. Edahril wasted no time and went over the details of their arrangement and what was to be expected from here on out. Ryker wasn’t surprised to learn that he would be helping to run the business since he was already second in command only to their boss. Nor was it shocking that Lora and him would run things once her father passed. He was proud of Lora once more as she took the initiative to try and stand on her own two feet. She had the makings of leading, she just needs some encouragement and support, both of which he was sure to provide.
He cleared his throat and looked around the crowd,
“Let’s continued to be united under this banner and thrive. I will do my best to see that we remain strong, and all I ask for is the loyalty that is already present among us.” He really didn’t need any fancy treatment and just wanted to maintain the respect that he had earned from them over the years.

It was weird to see her childhood friend in such a new light. The fact that it had been so rushed almost took the breath away from her. Loralei knew the reason they needed to marry so fast and in as much secrecy as possible. After all, her mother was crazy and would have gotten in the way. As Ryker taught her the young woman paid as much attention to detail as she could muster in the middle of it all. She wanted to learn and it had to be him that taught her.
She wrapped herself more around him with her leg go over his now as she got as close as she could. Her bi-colored eyes were closed now as she hummed a bit before she answered. “I think so. You are patient with me and have always been kind. Even if it was your job to do it… Many others aren’t and don’t care as you do.” Her eyes peeked up at him and she held a smile on her face. “I’m glad.” She pushed herself up enough to press her lips to his cheek before settling back down on him. Pulling the blankets over her she nuzzled herself against him before falling asleep without any other words. Lora was exhausted and for good reason.
In the morning, Lora woke up and it was his scent that brought her back to the living world. A yawn left her lips as a hand abandoned him to rub at her messy blonde hair. The woman rolled away from him for only a second before the warmth she had been using all night disappeared. Half sleepy eyes widened just a bit as she shook the sleep from her. There was a long stretch before she literally rolled to the side of the bed and slipped off of it. She could see Ryker from the mirror at her new vanity and it made her turn to look at him for only a moment before she got dressed.
The knock at the door spooked her as she had been tiptoeing around to avoid waking him. “Yes?” She opened the door only a tiny bit.
“Your father wishes for you and your husband to join him down in the parlor. He’s going to explain everything to everyone else.” It was a trusted servant who bowed and left her be. So much for letting Ryker sleep.
She came over to his side of the bed and tilted her head. “How long have you been awake and spying on me?” The little half-elf put her hands squarely on her hips. “I know you didn’t sleep through all of that.” Unless he did and then she would feel bad for accusing him. “Father wants us to go down to the parlor I guess…”
Once they were both ready and dressed for the day they headed down the long way to meet her father. Looking into the parlor there was everyone that was working at the estate. From enforcing like Ryker to the kitchen workers and maids. Shyly she hid behind Ryker and pushed him into the room before following him.
“Ah! There are the people I needed to see.” Edahril kissed his daughter’s forehead and looked Ryker over. “I brought everyone here to tell you the plans for the Desdemona family. I’ve moved in secret for a little bit now as to hide it from certain people in this house. Due to not finding a suitable husband for my dear Loralei, I have decided to adopt Ryker and marry him to her. From here on out Ryker will attend Jayou business with me and help me run this until I die. At that time Loralei and Ryker will work together to keep this family in one piece. It’s very important that we not let outsiders who do not know Jayou in. Which was my primary reason for asking Ryker to do this.”
Loralei finally came out of hiding from behind her father and husband. Her hands were clasped in front of her as she bowed softly. “Please continue to take care of me.” Edahril smiled as it looked like Loralei had caught on quickly.
“This is good news though! We will hold a party in a month’s time as to allow Ryker and Loralei the time they need to adjust. This will keep everyone else off of our backs for not announcing it sooner. I’ll also send out letters letting them know of their marriage. Everyone should do their best to keep this family on track. Everything is for the family and that is the only way to survive in Jayou. Anything else to add Ryker? Loralei?”
Loralei shook her head as she didn’t have the first clue on what they needed to hear.

If there was a higher power, then it was clear that he was being tested by them. He frowned when he heard Loralei’s words; why did she doubt herself so? Yes, she was just reaching womanhood, but she was beautiful, no doubt about it. It just never reached him until after the announcement; until then she had always been the same girl he met nearly a decade ago. Now, as he had thought before, he was forced to admit that she was not only a woman but would be his partner for life now. His chest heaved with every breath as he waited for her to prepare, only to be surprised when he felt her body pressed against his back. His head lifted up and turned slightly to catch a glimpse of her.
“Loralei…you…” His lips went to say that she didn’t have to worry about that, but she was persistent in what she had to say.
“Don’t be silly. It’s all new for both of us.” Ryker sought to control his breathing as he felt her hands turning him around, it was sure to be a shock considering how lithe she was in comparison to him. There was some strength in her he hadn’t expected, but now he would have to help with her confidence, something he didn’t think would be shaken until recent. As he looked onto her, his eyes widened as this was the first time ever that he had seen her in all her glory. He stood there looking at her for a bit before finding the strength to speak again.
“You are a quick learner at times, and I’ll help you as best as I can.” He followed her to the bed willingly and before they settled down, he took her by the hand and pulled her towards him. Ryker swooped in and kissed her softly at first but soon started to open up a bit more as he showed her that she wouldn’t have to be worried, that she wouldn’t have to be afraid of this.
It had helped that in his youthful years, there had been an experienced worker at one of the brothels he would soon visit every now and then that saw that he wasn’t just another brute that would just sate himself and not his companion. No, she taught the young werepanther many things on how to treat women he would bed later on in life. Bless that woman, for now, he would pour all her teaching onto his wife. Picking her up in his arms, Ryker laid her onto the bed and put those lessons to work on her, studying her reactions to gauge what to do and what not to do.
By the time they were through, time was irrelevant as far as he was concerned. Spent and tired, he looked over to Lora as she laid on him, just as tired as he was, perhaps more since it was her first time.
“Yes, will you be happy with me?”, he returned to her. Her scent filled his nose, mingled with his own through their first lovemaking session.
“I did promise to see you happy and protected, and that’s exactly what I will do, Lora.”

Loralei was worried about Ryker not liking her. That was why she had a hard time phrasing it. She saw the color leave his face and sat there in silence while she waited for him to come back. He was having a hard time dealing with this too. “I’m not worried about you looking.” Lora raised her voice a bit at him. “I’m worried about you not liking me.” Her face flushed up once more as she thought about it. “I mean you have had more experience and know what you like.”
He was trying so hard and Loralei knew she had to bite the metaphorical bullet. At this rate, he wouldn’t know what to do with her. He was already flustered. So while he was standing there trying to make a point to her she slid off the bed and undressed herself. Her face was bright red as she walked up behind Ryker and pressed her naked form to his. “I’ll be okay Ryker… I just don’t know what to do and am nervous. I’m worried I could disappoint you.”
She pressed her face against his back as her arms tightened around him. “But if you will be patient with me I’m sure I could learn… Right?” Her bi-colored eyes turned up to him. Knowing he would be looking at her at that moment. “I’m just scared you won’t like me.”
Once more it was Lora who let go and turned him around. She looked away shyly for a moment or two but finally met his gaze. “See?” Biting her lip she pulled him with her towards the bed. If someone didn’t start this no one would. Her mother could have a reason to end the marriage if they didn’t and then they would have to fight for what her father wanted. Lora saw this as the only course of action.
The girl was confident but it took much guidance from Ryker who wanted to show her so much more. Afterward, the girl curls up to him and pulled the blankets around her. She didn’t know what to think but she knew that the day had made her exhausted. “Do you think you’ll be happy with me Ryker?” She was still worried as an arm wrapped around his waist. Her head against his chest. There was no point in shying away from him. He was warm too.

“I wouldn’t worry about her. I never cared for what she had ever said about me.” Ryker had held his tongue when it came to Loralei’s mother, mainly out of respect for his boss. If it wasn’t for him, then the werepanther would have made sure to let her know just how he really felt about her. She was nothing but a waste of space and an unfit mother.
“She shouldn’t be speaking to you like that at all. Some mother.” He attempted to control himself from saying anything else negative- this was Lorelei’s day still and he wouldn’t waste another moment thinking about Syviis. Instead, they had this luxurious room her father obviously had spared no expense. Gods, Ryker had never dealt with these sort of things before and he was starstruck.
Recovering, he took to his glass and wine and nodded at her question.
“It's good. Figured that now you are married, its time to show you some of the things you haven’t had before.” It was obvious that she hadn’t dealt with having it before as she nearly dropped it, making him chuckle.
But things got crazy as he prepared both physically and mentally for the consummation. Loralei’s reaction wasn’t all too unexpected and by the time he completely removed the shirt and let it drop onto the floor, Ryker sighed and looked awkwardly at her.
“Well, we have to consummate the marr…” His new wife caught on, but her answer…it was enough to draw the color away from his face and for minutes, he was left speechless and had to leave the room. Once the door closed, he needed a breather as he tried to recollect himself. How in the world did her father expect this to play out? She was so pure and innocent in this sort of stuff. Could he really go through with this? Well, it was too late to go back now and after a minute, Ryker returned and turned his back to her.
“If it helps…I won’t look while you undress until afterward. Don’t fret, Lora, you are a very pretty girl.” Still, never in a thousand years did he think of seeing her naked, let alone “making babies” with her.
“You have a point, we have to consummate the marriage as husband and wife. And that does happen sometimes, the…uh…baby thing.” She couldn’t see it but his own face was getting a bit red as he could only imagine what she would look like when he turned around.

Lora was picked up and her arms immediately went around Ryker’s neck. Her face was blushing now as her anger seemingly melted away. Good, it hadn’t ruined the night as much as she thought it had. It was so weird hearing him call Syviis Mother that it startled Lora but she knew it was because they were all family now in some way. Ryker was now her husband and a Desdemona.
“I didn’t like the way she spoke to you.” She whimpered softly. “I can take her doing it to me but not to you.” Lora shook her head of pale blonde hair and smiled at him. “Th-” she stuttered a bit and blushed as she shyly looked away. “Thank you.” It was hard to stand up for herself but she really didn’t like the way her mother viewed Ryker. He had always been there with her after all… Her earliest memories were of them together. They were friends first.
The bedroom was huge as she looked around. There was a fancy vanity with many pretty things on it for her. Armoires for clothes… The bed was absolutely huge with soft blues decorating it and white curtains that were hung from the golden rods that circled the top of the four-poster bed. They were sheer and provided a look of elegance. There was even a fireplace to keep them warm at night.
Bedclothes were laid out on a bench near the door. It made her blush a soft tone. He set her down on the overly plush bed and she folded her hands into her lap. She took the glass from him and sniffed at it. “Is wine good?” She looked at Ryker and tilted her head. She had never had any interest in it before but she took a sip and let the taste savor on her tongue.
“Huh,” she jolted the cup and managed to catch the wine before it split on her. She put the wine glass down. “WH-” Her face completely blushed as she grabbed a pillow and hide her face as he started to take his clothes off. “What are you doing?”
It dawned on her… “Are… we gonna make babies now?” She for the life of her couldn’t remember the world as she lowered the pillow to look at him. Her face was bright red. "I'm not so sure you want to see me undressed." She averted her eyes.

The ceremony was going down with a hitch, something Ryker was grateful for. The fact that they were more so friends than anything going into this was awkward, but he hadn’t wished for a bump on the road or two. When Lora said “I do” and they exchanged rings, that’s when it hit him at once. They were officially married and he was a part of the family. Ryker was grateful enough for all they had done for him so far, he never needed anything else from them, including money. He would have gladly given his life up for both Edahril or Loralei without a second thought, but here he is. He was to make sure the legacy continued on with her and that’s what he would do.
Then the kiss…he had hesitated where she had not and once he felt her lips pressed against his, the werepanther responded, matching her force with his. It was an odd feeling but he also felt satisfied. Lora was a pretty little number, but he only saw her as the little girl that bugged him way back when. Now, he would have to see her as so much more.
But the peace would not last and the bitch had to show up.
Ryker felt that things were getting too good to be true and despite her father’s best efforts, Syviis came and once again tried to make everything about her. It wasn’t hard to see that the facade he kept whenever she was around, the passive look on his face, was melting into pure anger. He had stomached every single word, every single action this woman had produced and it took every fiber in him over the years as to not do anything. He cared little of what she had to say about him, but Lora? She didn’t deserve this on her greatest day. But then she shocked possibly everyone when she finally had enough. That slap across her mother’s face brought a full-blown smile across his face. Even a bit of a chuckle as he was proud of her for shutting her up.
Not wanting things to get thrown into a frenzy, he nodded at his new father in law and went over to picked Lora up from the ground and cradle her in his arms. She was fairly light enough to escort with ease and he took the kets for the instructed room.
“Get used to it, mother.”, he called out, his eyes sharp like daggers as they watched her get removed from their sights. And good riddance.
He turned around with his bride in tow and headed off for the stairs, carefully taking them up step by step.
“That was splendid. No, really it was.” He looked to her for a moment before continuing upstairs.
“Never saw you look that way before, but then again, I don’t blame ya. It was only a matter of time before her putrid mouth would cross someone other than your father. I would have thought it would have been me, to be honest.” Of course, he would also have expected for her to try (and fail) to persuade her husband to cast him out onto the streets from which he came if he had.
“Good for you.” Reaching the top, it was only a matter of recalling what Edahril had said before they reached the room they were supposed to be in. Shifting her a bit in his arms, he managed to get the key and unlock the door for them. Once inside, he closed and locked it, just in case her mad mother got any bright ideas and also…because of the fact that they were to consummate their marriage. It was something that just dawned on him as he placed her down onto the edge of the bed and sat right beside her.
“Well…suppose we should go ahead and…” He took a quick breath,
“well, you know… “ Gods, if there was ever a time he needed a drink, this would be the time. Fortunately, there was a wine bottle resting in a bucket of ice, complimented with a pair of fancy glasses which he took the liberty of filling with the beautiful and aged drink. Handing one of the glasses over to Loralei, Ryker gave it a few sips of his own before placing down the glass onto the nightstand nearby and started to undo his waistcoat and then shirt, exposing his torso. Gods, the next few bits were going to get seriously awkward for him.
The best, however, was yet to come for him.

Lora watched Ryker with an interest. She had never seen him so well put together before. Even his hair was finely done and it surprised the young woman. Her bi-colored eyes softened and as they joined hands. She listened to his words and blushed a bit more. It was weird to see him in such a light but it felt good in a way.
The small woman took his hands tightly in her hands as she nodded. “I do.” It would be a long time for them both seeing as they were from long-lived races. They exchanged their rings and it was simple plain gold bands for each of them. Not that Lora minded at all. It was simple a lot like they were and she liked that.
Then the pastor told them to kiss and Loralei blushed even more so. However, she was stubborn as she pushed herself up and met his lips for the very first time. It was short but it gave him enough time to react to her.
That was when the doors crashed in and Edahril was on the move. “NO!” He roared but her mother was already in.
“How dare you marry filth.” Gods, she was ruining everything but Loralei puffed her face up in the most intimidating way any one had ever seen. “You rotten… Spoil–”
Loralei hauled herself over and slapped her mother hard across the face. “ENOUGH. I have had it with you and disrespecting not only this family but also the choices my father, head of this house makes. YOU WILL LEAVE THIS ROOM. Or I will order the guards to make you leave.” Her eyes were angry as she stared at her now terrified mother. For the first time, Mother and daughter were looking into each other’s eyes. “You will not ruin this day for me like you have ruined every other day for me. You selfish ungrateful EVIL woman.” Loralei’s normally calm voice was actually rather pissed. It made Edahril pulled Loralei away who looked like she was ready for a brawl.
“Ryker… Why don’t you take Loralei to your suite?” He was pleased… Probably too pleased by his daughter standing up to her mother finally. “Pick her up bridal style, hold her tight, and make sure to make it to that room. She looks like she would actually kill her this time.” Edahril whispered to Ryker and tossed him Lora rather easily. “Upstairs… Down the left corridor and 4 doors to the right. Your new martial bedroom.” Edahril handed him the key and escorted his wife out.
“She hit me…” His wife was trembling.
“Can’t say you didn’t deserve it dear.”

Ryker was grateful that his future father-in-law wasn’t like the ones he had just mentioned. Performing such a thing with Loralei would be nerve-wracking enough, but to imagine her father there during that particular part of the ceremony… It was enough to make the werepanther all the more squeamish but aside from that, he kept his face right up until it was just him and Loralei by themselves.
“Don’t be silly. I see no reason why you won’t…make me happy.” Like him, she was worried about not being good enough for him, but there was a difference. She was born into this life of luxury, good or bad, and he wasn’t. Had her father not saved him, Ryker would have likely been dead somewhere so long ago, just another body floating down the rivers.
When she spoke up so bluntly at him, he had to look at her twice.
“Lora…” He had never seen her behave like this before. She seemed rather serious about this and didn’t want to hear anything about him putting him down. She was one of the few people to talk to him like that without fear of consequences. Not that there would be anything for her save for a small smile and a few chuckles. It never really bothered him that he was riffraff, he just wanted better for her.
“Far from perfect, and I can help you as best as I can.” While they have been friends for a long time, this was something of a different closeness that he wasn’t used to having with her, but it would have to be the norm for the both of them soon…
The time had arrived far sooner than he had anticipated, but he was properly prepared. Donning a fine crimson buttoned shirt with a waistcoat over and fancy trousers, he stood at the front of the altar. Among him were a few notable and selected individuals which fortunately didn’t include Lora’s mother. That would have been a nightmare and she would have tried to make it about herself somehow. Ryker wouldn’t put it past her and spoil her only child’s special day. When Lora arrived, he shared Edrahil’s shock and awe at how beautiful she was. Had she always been like that though? Perhaps, and maybe it was just that he hadn’t seen her in any other way than he had for years. Either way, he smiled at her and turned to the pastor as he begun.
“Right. I will be sure to be faithful and loyal to you for as long as I live. My sole mission will be to make sure you are happy and respected, Loralei. We are partners through and through.” He held onto her hand gently and the pastor continued onward up until the big question arrived for each of them.
“Do you, Ryker D’Angelo, take Loralei Desdemona as your lawfully wedded wife? To have and hold until death does you part?”
His hand grew a bit tighter around hers, and answered truthfully,
“I do.” “Do you, Loralei Desdemona, take Ryker D’Angelo as your lawfully wedded husband? To have and hold until death does you part?”

The man watched Ryker. “It’s a thing that needs to happen for this family to survive. It kills me to think about it but its normal… Not as weird or as far as some of the noble families take it though. I’ve heard stories of fathers staying in the room to make sure it was done right.” He was rather grim about and disgusted.
Loralei looked up at him with her big mismatched eyes and smiled. “Promise me that you will tell me if you are unhappy so we can help fix it.” She was serious and shy about it. “I want you to be happy too. I’m easily pleased and not that hard to make happy… but you have always been a mystery… So make sure you tell me… Okay?”
He took her arm and she smiled up at him. It was the first movement he did towards her. “I always try my best for most things.” Except her lessons but that was why she said most things. Lora watched his face go red while they talked and she tilted her head. It was weird seeing Ryker be so shy about it. She got a stubborn look on her face. “You are good enough! You stupid cat person!” She yelled at him and balled her fists. “Stop looking down on yourself cause of how you were born. Stupid.”
She blushed and shyly looked away from him. “I’ve never liked it when you said things like that. You’ve always been better at me towards the things I should be good at. I’ve always looked up to you… Literally.” She made a joke. “I think you are perfect.” She took his arms now and smiled. “Okay?”
He put the flower in her hair and she smiled up at him. “I don’t want you unhappy either…”
The time came and went and they were whisked away by her father for a private ceremony. The plan was to make sure that they could be married in peace. Which meant her mother didn’t even know. She was dressed in the finest of wedding dresses with her hair done up nice. Her father was actually choked up looking at her. A Jayou beauty like no other, he had uttered.
The man marrying them was a pastor from up top and he had been hushed to secrecy until the day they were wed. She was there alongside Ryker. Who looked nothing like his usual self. Today he would become a Desdemona. “Anything either of you would like to say before we begin?”
Loralei shied away for a moment. “That whatever happens… happens for the best.” She affirmed towards Ryker as she smiled. “We’ll do it together okay?”

“It’s not that, my lord!”, his voice was filled with surprise at talking about this subject with him.
“I’ve made…a few visits every blue moon, but I find it odd speaking of me being…intimidate with your daughter with you. But I am aware that we will have to produce an heir.” Gods this was beyond awkward. Nonetheless, the ball had to get moving and the two that were to spend their future together were left to discuss things.
“Yes, I’m aware of his antics. Very aware”, he sighed, being in many situations where his boss would let him deal with a lot of the issues when it didn’t suit him. Normally Ryker didn’t mind getting his hands dirty for his lord, but in this case, this was a pain.
He looked at her with some confusion but he nodded humbly,
“Yes, I am. I am willing to do anything for your family. You all have saved me at my lowest time and this is but another way that I can repay you.” His courage about this was starting to build up, but hers was wavering still. He frowned a bit as she put herself down and shook his head before taking her arm gently.
“I think you will be fine. It will be an adjustment and besides, I have faith that you will at least give it your all.” He wouldn’t let her confidence be shaken all too easily unless she didn’t want to be married to him. Ryker could understand that; he wasn’t sure that he should be the one marrying her and taking that glorious name but there was little choice in the manner.
“I’m not afraid of some curse, you know that. I will protect you no matter what, Loralei.” The werepanther wasn’t going to be scared off that easily, especially with that curse and she knew it. It also didn’t shock him a lot to hear that she knew about Jae.
“Aye, I wouldn’t let Jae pull anything even if he was able to marry you. He’d have a hard time with a couple of black eyes. Besides, it’s not like anything would change between us. We’d still be underneath this roof, you’d have your name and be able to play in the gardens and such.” Then he was reminded of one of the things that would be different, which was what he and his father were discussing up in his office. And again his face went red all over. He tried his best to keep his cool but was failing badly.
“I’d be more worried for you, Lora. I just wished you had someone that could be worthy of you around here. Anyone would be a lucky bastard to have you.” His words were very true as far as he was concerned.
“Don’t worry too much about me, it’s my honor.” While it was hard for him to not be awkward about this, the slight kiss on his cheek didn’t help matters but he was able to calm himself down. He threw her an awkward smile, seeing that normally she wouldn’t have done something like that. They had been friends for such a long time and now their relationship would change in the most unpredictable of ways.
“Yes, I will be taking on your name. That too is something that I don’t deserve, but it must be this way.” He reached down and picked a flower between his fingers, which were twirling it around by the stem.
“I’m unsure when this all came to your father’s mind, but it might have been down because of the fight yesterday.” After messing around with it a bit, he placed into her hair carefully.
“I know that he doesn’t want you to be unhappy, nor do I.”

Edahril looked at Ryker for a moment. He had a mischievous smile on his face. “Yes, you know what you will be expected to produced when you marry my daughter. With all the brothels around here Boy I thought you would have at least some knowledge of sex.” There was laughter from him but higher beings be damned if it made him choke thinking about his Lora like that. It wasn’t hard to see that Loralei was way too innocent.
Once they had spilled the beans to Loralei it seemed like it was heading south fast. That was until they were left alone. Lora had her hands on her hips. “You know he dipped out because he didn’t want to deal with if I was mad right?” A smart man like Edahril knew how to stay alive.
“You are fine with it?” Her hand reached up and she rubbed her neck. “You would be stuck with me more than you already are Ryker…” It had to be damning just a little bit to him. “I don’t know if I would make a good wife. I suck at practically everything a wife is supposed to do.” She shook her head and her bi-colored eyes watched him. “If you get sick I might just because to break your fever just a little but I can’t sew very well at all. And… cooking isn’t my forte either.” She reminded him. “I am working on it though.”
It seemed like she was trying to talk him out of it. “And this curse thing… Are you sure you want a walking disaster like me?” She was really, really trying hard to talk him out of it but when it appeared like she couldn’t she gave him but a small smile. “I guess it wouldn’t be so bad being married to you… We could stay here with Father in the mansion instead of having to go to some grubby old hermit’s house like Jae.” It appeared like she knew who had put an offer in on her. She was smarter than she appeared.
“But only if you are okay with it…” She double checked again. “I don’t want you to be stuck with me. I want to see you happy.” Lora was shy but she reached up and kissed his cheek. It was the first type of affection she had ever given him and it made her blush as her arms went behind her back and she held her hands. “So… You are taking the Desdemona name?”

He couldn’t let them down, not after practically raising him like one of their own. No, he had to reassure himself- he was one of their own. He had worked from the bottom up, paid his dues and stood where he was supposed to be. His life was in the hands of the Desdemonas and it was foolish of him to even consider refusing the offer. But a part of him didn’t feel like all would go well with this plan, and much of it had to do with Loralei. Heavens knew what was to come when she learned of this. She hardly wanted the fortune and everything that came with it to be thrust onto her; what would happen when she learned of this arranged marriage?
“Ch…chi…children?” If Ryker’s face had been just red a bit, then it was as bright as a tomato. He hadn’t thought of her in such a way and wasn’t about to, especially in front of her father of all people.
“I see, my lord.” He couldn’t voice his opinion completely, but he wanted to agree that Lora deserved better than the marriage her parents had. There was a severe lack of love and respect and he dared not to give her the very same when the time arrived. Quickly rising to his feet, he followed Edrahil out of the office to look for his daughter. With his nose, it wasn’t a long task at all and he stood beside her father. Aside from the sudden racing heart, he looked outwardly fine up until the cat was out of the bag. At first, she seemed angry but when it was mentioned who she was being wedded to, well he wasn’t able to see her reaction. He was busy not trying to crash into her by the sudden push by her father.
“Yeah, I’m fine with it”, he replied. He was going to have to be for all of their sake. But he wasn’t expecting for her to claim that she wouldn’t be good enough to be his wife, which was preposterous.
Before much more could be said, they were alone in the gardens and he stepped back, opening up some breathing room for Lora.
“It’s no joke. Your father decided that we are to be wedded. The time hasn’t been established quite yet, but I reckon it will be sooner rather than later. He figured that it was the only way that you don’t get trapped in a marriage that could harm you and I could still keep my word towards protecting you.” He scratched his head, wondering if this was going to end well still though.
“I have accepted this, but…I’m worried about how you feel about this. I didn't accept this out of the fortune or anything- I did it so that your family will continue to thrive and you are safe.”
Author: Loralei, Posted: Tue Dec 25, 2018 5:20 PM, Post Subject: Inheritance [P/R]
Edrahil chuckled a bit. “Not as uncommon as you would think my boy. It just isn’t talked about. It is a tactic that most families do when marrying their daughters off when they need a male heir. They often don’t speak of the life the boy had before and treat them as one of them own. It’s uncommon though and rarely used but I think the others will accept it. Maybe it’s because of the type of town Jayou is at its core. Anyone can become big here Ryker. Those who have an established family are lucky but a lot of them forget the hard work that got them here in the first place. I’m counting on you to be our eyes here.”
When the thought of Lora finding out about it came to pass he sighed. “I was actually hoping we could tell her together. Honestly, what I really don’t want is her to have a marriage like my own. Any children you would have would be loved by both of you.” That was important to Edrahil. Family.
“Come on then. Might as well drop the news on her… She might need time to process it.” He got up and beckoned Ryker to come with him.
Today Loralei was in a courtyard garden. She was hiding in some bushes with some flowers as she weaved them into a crown. “They won’t find me here~” Which was a lie. Ryker could track her down by scent.
“Who won’t find you?” Her father easily parted the bush and looked down at his daughter. Her bicolored eyes looked up innocently at him.
“You.” She was at least honest.
Edrahil laughed hard. “You are an enigma.” He pulled his daughter out of the bush and helped her dust herself off. “I have some news for you… Do you want to hear it now or when your head is out of the clouds.”
Even now Lora was looking around and looking at the flowers. “I’m always listening. My head isn’t in the clouds.” Her eyes turned to her father and he seemed off put by what she said. It was something he hadn’t expected from her.
“I see… Well I have some good news for you. I found you a husband.”
Lora’s face went red. “That isn’t fair. You aren’t going to as–”
Edrahil cut her off and pushed Ryker into her. “Ryker is going to marry you.”
Loralei began to stutter as she pulled back from Ryker who had hit her and probably caught her to keep her up. Her face was blushing now and she was oddly quiet compared to how combative she had been. “And… Ryker is okay with this? I mean… he could get a more useful wife. Let's be honest here.”
Edrahil rolled his eyes. Both of them had said the same thing at this point. “I’ll leave you two to talk.” He waved and left them there in the courtyard.
“You are mean.” Loralei looked up at Ryker. “This is a joke you are playing on me right?”

There could be very little said about the subject; he knew she was trying her best but at the same time, her father was right. Perhaps she truly wasn’t made for the life that her father was preparing her for. But what other option was there for her? Ryker didn’t like Jae to begin with, having heard tales of his cruelty and surely Edrahil didn’t think of him as a good match, but he was the only one that offered to take her hand in marriage. But his boss was wise to that fool’s game.
That said, he couldn’t believe that his lord would actually consider making him Lora’s husband. He leaned forward in his chair, his brows brought together and his throating getting a tad drier. His hands, which had been on the resting handles, gripped harder as he was told what happened to Jae’s latest wife and certainly didn’t want to see that happen to his friend. Everything else, he was aware of, unfortunately.
“You are right, and I’ve been aware of it. At the same time, what you propose is also a strange thing in our society.” But there was little choice for an outcome for her to be happy aside from it. He had sworn to protect her to the best of his abilities and was this anything different? His grip loosened and he found himself sighing as he weighed his options.
“After everything you have done for me, taking me in and bring me into the ranks, I owe you my life and then some. I’ll accept for you and your daughter, to protect what you have made and see that she is taken care of and happy.” He still wasn’t too sure of this, but Lora did deserve better than any other fate that could have bestowed her.
"When will she be informed of this?"

Edrahil laughed hard. “You flatter her too much. Lora is hardly trying and you know that. She always has her mind on candied clouds and beaches. Though when she puts her mind to it… She is a brilliant young woman.”
The man studied him for a good long while before nodding. “It’s true he could die. It’s also true he is way too old for Loralei for her to be happy. However, he’s the only one who's offered. The dowry he offered was quite the fortune too but I imagine its to get at my own.”
The man studied the young one for a long time after he began to stutter. “Can you answer me something Ryker?” he tilted her head much like his daughter when she was puzzled. “What would you do if her future husband were to hurt her? You are well aware of the dangers of being what we are correct? Do you know why Jae is on his next wife? He killed her for not giving him a son. What do you think would happen to Lora? That’s just how it is here. You would be dismissed from her probably immediately just because of how close you two are. There isn’t a lot I can do about it. That’s the way it is here and it’s why I haven’t married her off. Most daughters like Lora are married off far younger than she is.”
There was a sigh. “So I’ll offer it to you again. To not only protect Loralei but help her keep this fortune. You would take care of the empire I’ve built and you would take care of her. Worthy of her? In my eyes, you might be the only one I could trust her with. Plus her mother would hate it and that brings me great joy.” There was a bit of coldness to his voice but there was also a smile. “You understand her… and someone else might not and force her to change.”

He felt for her, he honestly did. Had ever since they were had met when they were adolescents. Ryker had still come to terms with being brought into the family and was rowdy as any street urchin could be while she was kind and gentle. It hadn’t taken long before he was both her protector and friend, making sure that she didn’t cross into harm. The only thing that she really had to deal with was her mother, who was less than such in his eyes.
“I’d think some of it has to do with that”, he agreed.
Ryker watched her with a slight smile. She was about the only one other than her father who could see the side he simply hid from the rest of the world. He knew that any signs of weakness shown in Jayou meant it could be taken advantage of quickly.
“It’s my duty and honor to make sure that you are safe, Lora. Don’t think anything of it.” Even he couldn’t be too sure if he would be able to protect her further once she was wedded. She would go to a new household and given his…reputation, it was highly doubtful that her future husband would take to another male, let alone him, being close to her. But if he could, he’d try his best to make sure she was well.
When it got late, he bid her farewell for the evening and retired into his own chambers. At the earliest, he was sure to be up and be near her room, but then he was summoned by his boss which confused him due to the timing but he headed off to meet with Edrahil.
“My lord”, he greeted as he closed the door behind him. Ryker was concerned over the summons by kept his face in check as he sat where he was requested. When the subject of his daughter came up, the werepanther blinked before regaining his composure.
“I think with some more time, she will be ready to take over when needed. She is still a bit young but she’s trying hard. As for any potential suitors…” He would have made a face about those that could have possibly been considered husband material in these parts. A great problem was that he hardly thought there was a man alive that deserved her.
“I’d say that was a good call, my lord. Jae isn’t exactly a horse I would bet on. He could probably croak at any moment.” He leaned back into his seat and wondered why he was being asked such things. But when the reason came out, to say that was he was dumbstruck was putting it very mildly. His face was red in both disbelief and something else.
“Lord Edrahil…what you are speaking of is a great honor and I mean no disrespect, but surely you wouldn’t want her to marry someone of my liking…I’m not worthy of her or your family name.” How would Loralei feel if she was here? He couldn’t help but think of that while stumbling with his words.

Ryker always made her feel better. He had been there almost from the start with her. They had been raised together though for different purposes. Played together when they were younger. Her father had always seen him as sort of a bodyguard for Lora. A constant friend and companion if she should need it. Lora tilted her head a bit. “Maybe I have a warm heart because I learned how not to be from dealing with her?”
Lora once more tilted her head to the other side. “You help me to Ry. You are practically the only one close to my age.” The thought of marrying someone remotely like her mother sent a shiver down her spine. “As long as you are around I’m sure that they wouldn’t put one foot out of line.” He had always stood up for her even if it was another family. After all, it was his job to protect her.
They closed out the night by saying their goodbyes. Ryker would remain close just because her mother was a tad more crazy than usual but in the morning something unusual happened. It wasn’t Loralei who was called but Ryker himself.
Edrahil sat at his desk looking out his window into the dark underbelly of Jayou’s city. “I have a question for you.” Once Ryker was settled in. “Please sit down where Lora normally sits.” The elder elf put his hands together on the desk as he turned towards the young shifter. “How do you feel about Lora? Do you think she is progressing well? Do you think any of the noblemen would be worthy of her in this city? The only one who currently is even remotely interested is Count Jae and he is ancient and on his sixth wife. I wouldn’t let Lora marry him even if my fortune counted on it.” He laughed a bit.
“I’m asking because I want you to take the Desdemona name.” His eyes deadlocked to Ryker. “I want you to marry Loralei instead of a stranger. Trust me I have my reasons for this request.”
Author: Ryker, Posted: Thu Nov 29, 2018 4:25 PM, Post Subject: Inheritance [P/R]
“I’m not surprised, unfortunately.” Ryker still had trouble understanding why her own mother would be so cold, so distant. Curse or no curse, it had always bugged him to see how Loralei had been treated but there was nothing that could be said or done about it. Her father tried his best to get her to stop being so shallow and think about her child. But no, Syviis was nothing more than a total bitch and he didn’t see anything of her like changing anytime soon.
“The marriage had been arranged, from what I’ve understood, so I get that your parents aren’t really in love. But for her to treat you like this? She’s clearly selfish, plain and simple.” He slid down to the floor, his back still up against the door with his eyes closed. Even now he could hear the voices starting to get louder and more hostile. More so from her mother’s side of things than her father’s.
“Only difference is that they are literally distant from here. Your mother’s coldness is in a league of its own.” His blunt tone softened a bit and he sighed,
“That merely means you care about people if you do. You aren’t like your mother in that regard. She’s cold while you have a warm heart. You’d thrive just about anywhere with that.” Perhaps except for Jayou, where one false move would mean certain foul play if one wasn’t careful. He really did believe that if anywhere else in the world, she’d be fine. But they were in a city of strong arms and cutthroats and he feared for her safety if anything happened to her father or himself.
“Can’t complain. Your father has done so much for me. I am indebted to you and him for as long as I live. Otherwise, I would still be in the streets, perhaps dead.” His eyes slithered slightly towards the direction of the growing screams. As usual, Syviis was throwing her own daughter at her husband’s face and he hoped that she would be smacked again. Maybe then some common sense would come to her for once.
“He’s right. It is her problem, not yours, Lora.” And with that, Ryker rested his head on a hand. The thought of that crazy woman leading this house was enough to make him shudder with fear. He’d imagine it wouldn’t have been long before she undid the years of hard work and dedication Edrahil had put into. One of these days, she would learn to be a better mother or more so, she would die a fool as he thought.
“I pray that when you marry, you don’t get wound up with a fool; or I will do more than just slap him around”, he said with a tiny chuckle from his lips.

Loralei thought about it and nodded. “It’s just weird… I’m sure there is a reason for it though. I mean it is supposed to be only a male thing.” Hopefully.
Once back in the safety of her room she made her way over to a changing panel and switched into her nightgown. Ryker had always been with her so she wasn’t the shyest creature around him like she was everyone else. “She’s something…” Loralei gave him a sad look. “You know she doesn’t even look at me.” She hadn’t ever since Loralei was born.
The half-elf had been cared for by a wet nurse since she was born. Her mother Syviis either wasn’t capable of or wouldn’t feed her. Things only got worse as she grew up and the superstition that Syviis had… Well, that’s all there was to tell. She was scared of Loralei.
Sitting on the end of her bed now she looked up at Ryker with interest. “I didn’t know them very well. Am I supposed to feel sad over it?” Her eyes drifted over to the window. “It’s not like you or Father… I would be sad if either of you were gone. I suppose they are like Mother to me. Distant… Not really there.”
Her bi-colored eyes looked towards him once more. “Do you like being here Ryker? You don’t ever complain and yet you always ask me how I am. It doesn’t feel right complaining to you if you can’t do the same.” She could still hear the distant yelling of her parents. It was loud and clear.
"You always care more about her than you do for me!" Her mother was shrieking. It was obvious she was in frustrated tears over the whole thing.
"I said enough. You've always treated that girl like she was a burden to you from the moment she was born. That is on you NOT Loralei." Her father was as stern as ever.
Loralei groaned and fell back onto the bed so she could look up at the ceiling. "Man, you would think Mother was the heartless crime lord…" It was a jest as she chuckled.

He rolled his eyes and clicked his tongue at Loralei.
“My hair is just fine, thank you very much”, he spoke but didn’t do anything when she messed with his hair. He’d only let her have her way with that because they knew each other for so long now. Even as children, she had a knack of being able to get his goat yet his temper never lashed out towards her. Part of it was out of respect and another was that they understood one another well.
“It’s unfortunate, but you are the only one with the blood that can lead, Lora.” Ryker walked b her side as she prepared to see her father up in his office. He was silent all the way to the room and closed the door before heading back to his whittling. He would listen every now and then at the lessons she was given, mentally going over them in his head as they were some of the things he had absorbed back when he had to learn. It was like clockwork as he easily recalled the names of the other families in his mind. His eyes hit her every so often as it looked like she was getting it. She was a smart cookie, beneath that aloof demeanor of hers. He let out a ghost of a smile up until Syviis came in and ruined things.
Out of the three Desdemonas, she liked her the least but respected her nonetheless if nothing other than the fact that she was his boss’ wife. But even then, that seemed to hang on by a thread. He continued to sharpen his blade as she explained why she just blasted herself right in without warning. The tales of her family being cursed was known, but he thought of them as just being freak accidents. His boss, on the other hand, was convinced and he nodded as he escorted Loralei out of the room.
They weren’t halfway out of the room when her mother was slapped as a means for her to get a grip. Losing family was a painful thing, but it was something he hadn’t really experienced. A few members of this establishment had perished and they were the closest thing to family for him and yet he was able to control himself through it. This curse or whatever it was had to end sooner or later- there were no more males on that side of the family anymore.
He quickly led her out of that storm and turned to her.
“Not too sure really. Your father certainly believes though. I’m not one to follow such superstition but there have been crazier things in this world that happened." As they made it to her room, he wondered if it was possible that this predicament would even reach them. There were no males born in their family, and Loralei was their sole child. Surely if it was real, then they would avoid it completely right? Or…when it was time for her to have children, would she be destined to continue it through any sons she would carry?
Ryker locked the door and was pressed up against it- her safety was priority number one for him. No matter what happened, her life was more important than even his own. Considering everything, he’d gladly give it up for her.
“You shouldn’t mind her too much; she’s very emotional right now.” But still, she should have been worried over her daughter instead of herself. It was something that struck a nerve with him, which he didn’t show for his boss to see. Loralei, on the other hand, he expressed his frustrations towards.
“How are you taking it?”
Author: Loralei, Posted: Thu Nov 29, 2018 1:17 PM, Post Subject: Inheritance [P/R]
It was his whistle that caught her off guard. “Already?” Her bi-colored eyes turned and looked up at his eyes. “I guess I lost track of the time.” Maybe she was lying but it couldn’t be seen as she put the flowers into the basket with the shears and got herself off the ground. A gentle hand came up and moved her long hair over her shoulder now. “You should really do something with your hair Ryker…” There was a mischievous look on her face as she parted his hair. “It’s getting unruly again.”
Loralei tilted her head at him and nodded. “I know why. I just don’t know why.” If that made sense but it did to Loralei. She wasn’t fit for this sort of thing but she knew that she was the only one who could take over for her father. “All well. No use crying over spilled milk,” she spoke with stubbornness as she walked with Ryker back into the large house.
The little half-elf put the basket down on a stand by the entrance before they finished making their way upstairs. “Ah, my heart.” Edrahil hugged his daughter after the door closed. “Are you finally ready to stop goofing off?”
Loralei lulled her eyes back and forth in thought. “I mean… Maybe.” Her eyes looked up into her father’s. They were a vivid green. They reminded her of the leaves from an ash tree in spring. Her voice was shy but her eyes spoke worlds of how stubborn she could be. They spent the next few hours going over all of the families that mattered in Jayou… and for once Loralei appeared like she was absorbing it. Or had she just been playing dumb the entire time?
Even in the underbelly, it was easy to tell when it was close to night time. There was something about the night blossoms that changed once the sun was down in the outside world. That was the first time something went wrong in Loralei’s life.
Syviis who was a tall and slender woman almost slammed open the door in a panic. “It’s my father and brother. They were killed in a mine explosion when they were overlooking the workers.” Loralei’s eyes got big for a moment. She had heard that the males in her family were very… unfortunate. It was the reason why her mother had come all the way to Jayou to marry her father.
Edrahil stood and stared at his wife. “Calm down. You are scaring Loralei.” It was clear that it was frightening her just a bit. To lose both her uncle and her grandfather. They were the last remaining males of their family. Her mind couldn’t help but to turn to whether or not the curse or whatever it was on them was broken now.
“Ryker please take Loralei to her room now. Make sure she stays there. We absolutely must make sure nothing happens to her.” It was an odd request but Edrahil had always taken the misfortune that came with her mother’s family seriously.
“HER?! What about me?” Her mother yelled but Edrahil was quick to slap her. It scared Loralei but she understood why her father did it. Syviis was detached from Loralei and always had been.
“Enough, woman. Ryker, take Loralei now.” Loralei was quick to agree as she left with Ryker. After closing the door she looked up at Ryker.
“Do you think its true? That all the males are cursed in her family?” She couldn’t help but think about her own children someday. She had to have children, didn’t she? It was a grim thought.

Like in any other city, Jayou was no exception to having poverty tucked beneath its sights. Any prove needed of that could be seen in Ryker as he whittled at his dagger as his boss looked out the window. Standing in the corner, his amber watched carefully as he knew who Lord Desdemona was studying. It had been twelve years since he had been serving this family and its business. Before that, he had been on his own for as far as he could remember. An orphan and street urchin, he had worked hard to survive day by day, night by night. The young werepanther did whatever he could and eventually became good at thievery and before too long he schemed to steal from those that partook in the games of chance. It was then that he was easily caught taking the coin pouch of an elven man, but rather than to punish the boy, the man saw potential in him and took him under his wing. That man was the one he was employed by; the one that practically raised him from that day forward. Everything he had learned was from him and the business; starting from the bottom where he would run simple errands, to becoming a made-man, to his top enforcer, Ryker worked his tail off and worked his way through the ranks. His loyalty was unwavering and was completely given towards the Desdemonas.
When he heard his name called out, he ceased his action and came over towards the boss. With a quick glance, he saw Loralei tending to the flowers. Nothing unusual given how she was- it was how he had always known her to be since they were young. She was too pure, good-hearted to partake in this life. Head in the clouds, they would say of her, but she was his boss’ child and from the start, he had been rather protective her. No harm would come to her as long as he could help it. Even after all those years, not much had changed. His lordship was troubled as she would one day become the head or it was possible that through marriage, her future husband would take over. Hopefully, it would make for a better marriage than her parents’.
“Yes sir”, he replied before heading down and seeing Loralei continuing to cut flowers around the garden. A quick whistle was shot at her, his calling card so that she’d know who was coming from behind her. The much larger man sought through his dark locks with a pair of fingers, the other hand hung onto his side.
“Hey Lora, it’s time again.”He peeked over to her little collection of flora and sighed. Such a tiny thing she was, it was hard to see her as becoming head any time soon. Ryker didn’t want to see blood on her hands, as much as he owed everything to her family. But it couldn’t be helped, and he tried to help her many times. But that damn stubbornness of hers…it was both admirable and annoying.
“Your father wants to see you. Doubt I have to say anything about as to why…”

Deep within the underbelly of Jayou laid the estates that ran the city’s crime. The major players were well known but not all of the minor ones were. The Desdemona family was a syndicate that were a source blood family from before Jayou had been called Jayou. They built their estate underground far from the major players and kept to themselves. This kept them out of much of the bigger conflicts and allowed for them to rally under a larger house to secure better profits.
Edrahil Desdemona was the current head of the house. He was a strict elven man with a temper to go with it. His hostility caused many to shake just from him walking by. But he did have a weakness. He had been forced to marry a human woman named Syviis from another neighboring family. She was wealthy and had a good head on her but he did not love her. No, his only weakness came in the form of a child born from the union.
It was unfortunate but Syviis had been unable to conceive another child after the birth of their daughter Loralei. A strong-willed girl who was as kind as her father was cruel. Unlike her parents, she seemed to have a mind of her own and often spent days letting her daydreams take hold. Far too delicate for the work of a crime family. She had been raised as Edrahil’s replacement but on the stipulation that she marry a man who could be the backbone she needed.
Most men did not want such a fair creature when it came to the underbelly. Still, Edrahil did not give up on his only child. Loralei was often his emotional support and his ear. She would give him suggestions for things that he could not do. Her gentle touch seemed to help in ways that he had not foreseen. Still, Loralei didn’t much care for taking over for the Desdemona family. Her head was too into the clouds and even once she reached her nineteenth birthday she was still distracted.
Edrahil sat up in his study and watched out the window. He could see Loralei picking the night blooms that grew in the underbelly. They glowed a soft blue since most of the time it was so dark. A sigh left his lips. What would he do with her? She was still young yet. Elves were long-lived after all and Loralei was showing all the signs of having inherited that trait.
“Ryker, can you go fetch me Loralei? Bring her up to the study. It’s almost time for me to once again try and teach her about the political aspects of Jayou… Hopefully, her head isn’t as in the clouds today as it was yesterday.” Only his most loyal guard would hear him laugh about Loralei. She was an odd child. With all the darkness and death around her, she was still soft and gentle.
There had been a time when Loralei wasn’t the healthiest child… He supposed that was why he was so gentle with her. Afraid of her being fragile still.
She was a fair beauty which was why Edrahil had thought it would be easy enough to find a husband to back her. However, it wasn’t an easy feat once they realized just how stubborn the girl was. Lora had pale blonde hair to the mid of her back with braids pulling her hair away from her face. Her skin while pale wasn’t completely absent of color. It was the girl’s eyes that seemed to offset people the most. Like her mother Syviis, she had one dark blue eye and one vivid purple eye. Lora was a small girl who was still growing, that much was true.
She was humming down in the garden as she sniped at some flowers to put in the vase in her room. She wasn’t dumb and knew that soon her father would call for her… Still, she wasn’t looking forward to it. There was so much to know and she knew he expected her to memorize most of it. A frown came to her lips for only a moment before she went back to humming and ignored the feeling. "Snip, snip." She called as she cut some more flowers as gently as she could.
