When Aarek had agreed to go off on the long and, quite frankly, rather boring journey across the ocean to retrieve supplies, he hadn't given it a second thought. Now, he supposed he should've questioned the request a bit more. Who sent a man all the way to another continent just to get some extra herbs and ingredients, after all? In hindsight, it was probably obvious that Madame Paulina was just trying to get him out of the orphanage for a while. And he couldn't really blame her for that. As much as he loved playing his flute for the children, the truth of the mater was that he simply wasn't any good at controlling the rascals. They always wanted to steal his instruments or cause mayhem around him, and he could tell that all he'd done since arriving was make the caretakers' jobs harder.

So, as he leaned over the railing of the large ship, all he could do was stare at the horizon and watch as Onnen's islands slowly came into view. Kassia rested on his shoulder, her tiny head curled into his neck, tickling the long strands of hair at its base. His sun-kissed skin looked perfectly natural aboard the rocking ship, which made his lips turn up in a bit of a smirk. He might even have passed for a sailor, had he any more durable clothing, or perhaps a sword. He wouldn't have minded that. As it was, he didn't project any sort of threat, what with his loaded backpack and tiny companion.

Other travelers on the boat chatted excitedly amongst themselves, each one detailing some extraordinary thing they planned to do on the continent. Sighing, Aarek pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, the cracked left lens momentarily warping the view before him.

The closer they got to the docks, the more people crowded around the sides of the ship. Already uneasy from the crowd, the half-elf stepped away and found a crate to sit on, instead. The songbird on his shoulder stirred awake, chirping indignantly at his movement. "Quit your complaining, Kass. We're nearly docked," he chided quietly, and she settled down a bit.

Indeed, soon enough the ship had pulled into the dock, and the crowd of visitors hardly waited for the gangplank to be set before rushing into the village. One tattooed hand gripped the strap of his pack tightly, but he eventually followed suit.

He had to admit, Mamjaku was a far cry from anything in Adeluna. In fact, despite its crude resemblance to the city of Mamlak, the settlement looked nothing at all like Canelux. His stomach twisted, from nerves or excitement or some combination of both.

Aarek breathed deeply to calm himself, blinked his copper eyes a few times, and ventured into the outpost. He made sure Kassia stayed with him for both of their sakes. For him, he needed her calming presence and a sense of familiarity, and he didn't want her to get lost in a foreign environment. "It's okay," he muttered, steeling his nerves. "We can do this." How hard could exploring a new continent in search of materials be, right?

When first coming to the continent of Onnen, he’d made a point to go straight to the tunnels of the Malagasi Islands. The crystals there had called to him as they always did, but he’d become so used to the close quarters and darkness that being above ground in Onnen was intimidating. In a way he’d made it easy on himself by going to such secluded areas first, even if he’d met a sassy child there completely on accident. Now? He was able to take in the full affect of interacting with a new continent.

The air smelled different, it was the first thing he’d noticed. Even the spray of the ocean lingered differently in his nostrils than anywhere else. Much more than a new continent, this place felt like an entirely new world all together. There were so many different kinds of people here, animals, plants, minerals, that for once he wasn’t feeling the creeping anxiety that had overshadowed him for the past year.

Upon arriving to this neck of Onnen, Mamjaku, he was intrigued to see, of all things, lions striding proudly near the wall. They seemed neither concerned with nor threatened by the approaching ship. Now that they were docking, he was able to see the many tributes to them in stone around said wall. He smiled wistfully and folded his bare arms on the edge of the ship; his stomach fluttering in anticipation.

A soft rustle of wings brushed his shoulder as a falcon with feathers of golden light silently landed next to him. It stayed erect, its shimmering eyes narrowing skeptically at the calm lions in the distance. Naota lifted a hand and touched two fingers to the back of his companion’s soft head. It eased, but never moved its eyes away from the possible targets.

“New continent, don’t be so jumpy,” he said softly. It answered by sidestepping closer to him along the wood. The dock came up and the ship was quickly tied. While everyone else hurried to get off as soon as possible, Naota waited patiently for everyone to thin out. He could have teleported to the shore, but didn’t want to surprise the lions or anyone else. This place was new and he wasn’t privy to their customs or expectations, so for now he’d play the part of mortal traveler.

When it was time for them to go, the falcon soared above him, keeping an ever-protective eye trained on its charge as Naota walked down the ramp. He pushed his long fingers between the thick locks of his dark brown hair and realized all of a sudden how badly it needed to be cut. Had he ever let it get this long before? Barely an inch more and he’d be able to successfully tie it off.

The emerald of his crystalline eyes gently glowed the closer he got to the wall, but the sun was bright enough that it wasn’t noticeable. Excitement was coming on fast, and he soon found himself picking up pace, but always made sure not to bump or hurry anyone around him. That was until he got too focused on a particularly curious carving in the wall and bumped directly into the backpack of someone in front of him much harder than he ever would have meant to.

“Ah! I’m sorry!” he quickly apologized. He moved his hands out to stabilize the person should they need it, his eyes much wider and his cheeks warm.
