Roars of laughter poured warmth throughout the city's streets while the windows spilled a golden light onto on the mounds of snow. Astrielle paused momentarily, running her hand over the cold stone walls and gazed hesitantly at tavern's wooden sign. It creaked mournfully in the wind despite the amiable company the place seemed to offer.

Pulling back the hood of her cloak, Astrielle brushed platinum strands of hair from her face. Her skin glimmering like frost in the moonlight. Astrielle was strangely too beautiful for a place this human. She exhaled, grasping the door handle with nervous reluctance. Then like an amplified wave, the cheers of drunkards and the shrill, fliratious laughter of wenches washed over her as she entered.

Mapping of the room, Astrielle spotted an empty table toward the back of the tavern. She then slinked hurriedly between the jostling bodies and drink-loaded tables, almost gliding across the floor boards. But her grace was disrupted as she was bumped and she landed into the chair with a soft thud. She grimaced, unclasping her cloak and placing it hastily at her side. She then reached into her trouser's pocket, retrieving a golden coin and placed it at the table's edge with a sharp clink.

The barkeep approached with a stack of glasses in hand. He picked the coin off the table and Astrielle murmured, "Hot tea, please". A few minutes later, he returned empty-handed except for one chipped cup and a small, translucent tea pot with an amber liquid sloshing inside.

As Astrielle poured, frowning at the cup's imperfection, she watched as some sort of vegetation swirled around in the hot water. She let her eyes lose focus and the noise around her turn into a steady hum.

It was the first night of her Trials and she had no idea where to begin in this world that already seem so scathed.
