Liselotte watched as Douken tested the lacrimium key's reaction to magic. The conductivity and affinity the metal had was simply fascinating. "Astounding… It makes you wonder if the Ancients crafted the key in such a way that it would serve as wordplay aside from its practical purpose." The arcane arts were not exactly her area, with her focus more on the aspects of biological compounds and processes. She was still green regarding the deeper complexities of advanced alchemy, but the magical power from the artifact was palpable. "Again, congratulations! It's a pity we don't know where this key belongs or what it was meant for. It's almost like one of those fantastical novels that are popular nowadays which sell for a dozen crescents or less. Discovering lost relics of fallen civilizations and inter-generational romances have become the literary trend this year."

At the end of her musing and hypotheses, it was up to the owner–Douken to see what future the key would hold. She had done her part in informing him on its composition and the background regarding the components. By now she could hear that her distillation of hartshorn was now complete, and she began filtering the boiled liquid to prepare the unrefined salts for crystallization. The smell was strong, pungent even. The telltale stench of ammonia filled the air and lingered even after she capped the container. It was no surprise why she had her laboratory separate from the main house now. Even those without delicate sensibilities would find it hard to endure such odors on a daily basis. The ventilation of the structure made it more bearable, but even a light breeze couldn't immediately dissipate it. "Ah, it's finally done. Once I process it a few more times, I'll be able to replace my dwindling stock of smelling salts." Carefully placing the vial inside a cabinet to cool, she revealed several jars of various pieces of animals ranging from claws to dried tendons.

"I think things are fine as is," Douken commented, looking down at the key as it hung from his neck. From where it rested, the region where the sliver was taken was not even visible, meaning any gleam from the metal core was hidden as well. It was as if he had a simple brass key hanging around his neck just as before. Just, instead of brass, it was one of the rarest metals on the planet it seemed.

"Its still strange to see it as a basic key shape though. That part still gets me." It was so simple, and yet, held a ton of mystery. Why use such a rare metal to open a door when steel could do the same? Either it was once more a case of Ancient madness, or something more…. complex. It was almost an idea was being forged in his head.

"… How does Lacriamium react to magic?" he thought out loud, holding his hand up as his fingers began to glow green, sparking with mana, just like how he demonstrated his rune casting in the book store. He was honestly willing to draw on it the UNlock Rune he knew for kicks, but once he touched it, the key itself sparked to life, littering the key and the air around it in a set of much more complex runes. "Very well, I guess," he chuckled, using his free hand to once again free the key from around his neck so he could look at it closer. "I can tell you this much: The runes here are definitely very complex…"

"Lacriamium is the king of all metals, rarer than gold and silver while more durable and resilient than steel and orichalcum. The only material with properties vaguely comparable to it is diamond–commonly referred to as 'adamant'. The color itself gives its identity away–and there's no doubt on why people laud it as the metal of the gods." Liselotte gushed as she was feeling giddy from discovering such a rare metal in what had masqueraded as a simple trinket. "You see, anything made with lacriamium could theoretically last a lifetime or several. That detail in itself means this key, is important. How important I have no idea, but if they went through the trouble to make a key out of this then it should very well be worth the find."

Regaining her composure and stopping herself before she continued into an extended spiel on metallurgy, she put her tools away and cleared her workbench. "I'd say that plating was what saved it from being re-purposed by treasure hunters. Even for an ancient relic, a piece of solid lacriamium would sell for a good price. With the guilds in Karith and smiths in Baltil, it would be easy to find someone more than willing to part with their coin for it. Since there's no need to analyze the piece of plating anymore, I could return it to you to have it melded back on if you'd like." Unfortunately for her knowledge, she was only versed in the decomposition of items than putting things back together. She could attempt to weld it back on but it would be uneven, and unprofessional. She wasn't sure how precise the lock this key matched would be.

Douken blinked as he watched the information run through her head, taking in the notes and details before piecing them into one solid answer she felt comfortable with: Plated Lacriamium. This brought forth two questions to his mind, but he doubted he could only get one of them answered. "What's lacriamium?" was the one he figured he could get an answer from, and thus he asked Liselotte about it. "I mean, from the sounds of it, its a really tough metal, but what makes so important that it plastered such a wide grin on your face? You think its something to do with the Ancient's strange methods of thinking?"

The other question was 'Why was it plated," though the half elf had a theory of her own: to make it lasting. I mean, it did stop the metal itself from being as beaten up as the shell itself, however, he couldn't really think of it like that. After all, the shell was cut clean while the core was untouched. If anything, Douken would think it was to hide the metal itself under something less valuable or rare. Either way, they did not have the power to ask.

"To think that old man was right with his stories for one," he couldn't help but joke before latching the key back around his neck.

Drawing closer, she examined the place he pointed at on the key. There was the layer of gilded metal covering an entirely different one composing the core. "Is that…? But it couldn't be. That luster is unmistakable, it certainly isn't silver or aluminum. I'm not sure if I even have a sample of whatever that metal is in my laboratory's stock." Liselotte looked troubled as she crossed her arms, considering how to go about this. There was a possibility that she suspected, but she had to take another look at the testing sample she had just taken. Opening a drawer, she produced a small shallow ceramic plate and a pair of tweezers. Very carefully she opened the glass container and removed the sliver of metal, setting it on the white ceramic plate to get a better look at the side where she had made the cut.

"…The heated blade I used to remove the sliver was made of steel. Yet in spite of being subjected to intense heat and pressure, there are no visible traces of that second metal in this piece. Properties aside, I am sure there is only one logical answer as an explanation. The key is plated lacriamium. No matter what kind of tests I run, nothing will be able to corrode or cut the core." Leaning against the worktable, she crossed her arms with a grin. "This key of yours is turning out to be quite a find, don't you agree? Lacriamium isn't something used to make common items, and then that leaves the question on why it was plated with another metal. Whoever crafted this wanted it to last for a long time, in my opinion."

Liselotte was certainly well within her element, considering her layman's terms still used vocabulary that felt quite foreign to him. Still, he stood there and watched her move about, handling a searing hot tool with easy as she took a small segment of the item, admiring the cut and setting the sample and blades aside as her mind's gears turned. Douken smiled as he took his key back, peering over the cut itself. Without any dirt of it, the item itself nearly looked gold in color, making him think that maybe he should go one day polish it… before taking a sudden pause. There was… something else within that cut. It was tiny, but so standout that he could not help but look at closer.

When she turned back over to him, he was taken aback when she called over to him. "H-huh? Oh, uh, I am currently residing at the Deep Iris Inn close to the market district. Second floor in room 203. But still, I don't think things will go so quickly." Motioning her over closer, he pointed at there she made her cut. While it may have looked a tiny sliver, there was a shine of a silvery blue underneath the golden metal.

"Yes, in layman's terms. I'll be mostly dipping it in acids, bases, running conductivity tests, comparing luster and streak, and a few other things depending on how the first run of testing goes. Hopefully I won't need to run all of those. The results normally indicate its identity fairly quickly unless it happens to be an alloy. Alloys of three metals and above always make things more difficult." Liselotte carefully took the searing-hot blade and sliced off a thin sliver from the key, only millimeters thick. The cut was even and clean, standing out from the rest of the key's worn and smoothed exterior. "There we are…a lovely piece if I might add. Now let's put you away before you get lost somewhere." Putting the red-hot blade away in a drawer out of reach to cool, she proceeded to lock it as to keep it away from causing potential injuries. Returning to the work station she pulled out a clear glass jar with thick walls, and gently coaxed the metal fragment into the container; sealing it with a rubber stopper. With a steady hand, she wrote: 'D.S. sample' on the glass surface with a peculiar black pencil.

"There. Now all that's left is to check on that distillation and clean the glassware for next time." She went over to a distillation apparatus still in progress, and turned down the burner fueling the reaction. Turning to Douken she smiled, back to her usual self. "So where do you plan to head off to after? The whole series of tests will take a while, but should the results turn up earlier than expected it wouldn't hurt to let you know sooner than later, would it?"

It was a shame on how much her mother harassed her on trying to wed, especially considering how beautiful and inviting her home was. It would be a grand time to relax and spend time with others here, if not for the harassment from the mother of the household. Even with that brief moment did he feel like Liselotte's mother did not want him here unless he was looking to wed his daughter… and they had only met on that day. Talking about marriage would have been way to fast for him, and maybe Liselotte as well.

Stepping into her lab, it was clear how much clutter there was when the window opened up. There was hardly any space that was not being used up for something, whether it be holding lab equipment, littered with vials and containers, or holstering many other ingredients and chemicals from her lab work. And still, it was not really worth checking out as the alchemist got into her zone, preparing a section to run her analysis before heating a small bade up.

Giving a quick nod, he adjusted the key on the ring to expose the back portion that would have normally been hidden away by the clasp.. That way, she can get her sample from the area and still have the "damage" be unnoticeable. Setting the key on the table, Douken lightly rested on one of the shelves, asking, "So, what do you plan on doing with the sample, anyways? I mean, I can only guess you will try to see if it matches another metal here or something?"

Author: Mezereon, Posted: Tue May 23, 2017 8:38 PM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

With Douken swiftly sidestepping the question, Liselotte followed up in agreement. "Yes, my laboratory is behind the house through the back door." As she led him to the door opening to the side of the house and into the estate's backyard garden, she assured her mother: "It will only take a minute, mother." Once they were out of the house, she walked him through the stepping stone paths surrounding well-manicured topiaries and rose gardens. A few fountains and statues were artfully placed to create a charming atmosphere perfect for summer evenings under the stars or walks in the shade. At the very back and a good distance away from the landscaping was what resembled a combination between a glass greenhouse and what might have originally been an abode for guests. Taking out the key to the door, Liselotte turned it thrice in the lock which opened with a loud click. Pushing it open, she stepped inside and struck a match to light a lamp beside the entry, then went over to open the blinds.

Tugging on the cord, the shutters on the windows snapped open, flooding the place with daylight. "Oh! Heavens that's bright–" She closed her eyes as they had to adjust to the sudden brightness, and turned them to a more reasonable slant. The light revealed the entire place to be a single room, with counters along every wall save for the door leading to the hothouse outside. Cabinets, rolling carts, all sorts of apparatuses in glass and metal filled up the space as she opened a drawer looking for the right tool to take a small piece of Douken's heirloom key off. "No. Not this one. This won't work either. What was this thing for again? So that's where my third stirring rod went… Another pair of clamps, forceps, metal shavings… Ah here it is." Pulling out what appeared to be a larger version of a scalpel, she scraped it along the surface of a palm-sized whetstone and began lighting a burner to heat it up. Setting up a rack, she laid the blade directly above the flame and waited for the metal to glow red-hot. Not to waste time, she retrieved a pair of thick armored gloves specially designed to handle hot objects and put them on.

"Once it's heated enough I'll need to have you put your key on the table there where I'll slice through it as if it were butter. With luck, it will take only a few seconds. If it doesn't go through it might have something to do with the metal's composition and I'll opt for some shavings instead."

Liselotte's mother certrainly shined with the youth and beauty elves were known for, decorated with a dress and gems to add into the royalty rank. Douken stood quietly as the three spoke with each other. The little girl Liselotte called Calandra seemed to be one of those girls who excited for rumors and scandals, especially with how she took off the moment he was spotted. As for Mrs Ellabore herself, it seemd she was trying to shine her class by her words alone, dropping hits of matchmaking as if being apart of semi-arranged marriages, and reflecting the "when I was your age," card he normally hear the old use when talking about silver. The stern look he got from her was the last bit of detail he took in before she took off, feeling her not trusting the stranger. Well, at least he could not blame her there.

Still, if talking about "as old as she was," Liselotte was either older than she looked (no surprise, given elven aging compared to humans) or Mrs. Ellabore got married at an "extremely young" age…

With her mother heading towards the kitchen, Douken moved into the home after the alchemist cleaned off her boots, going the same as talk about the rest of the family was going on. It was not until he was offered anything did he speak up.

"Thank you for the offer," he called out in return, "but we had something before coming here talking about the job in question." Still, he was not going to mention how said something was in a place that got ransacked by a skeleton meteor. "Now then, shall we get going?" he addressed Liselotte, reaching to the back of his neck to undo the t-latch that held the key around his neck.

Approaching them was an elven woman with honey-brown hair and hazel eyes. Surprisingly, she looked much younger than one would expect. Mrs. Ellebore was dressed in a conservative sleeved dress in shades of green and matching emerald jewelry. Not far behind was the young girl who had greeted them, right on the heels of her mother. "Hello mother, I'm sorry to bring along a guest on such short notice." Liselotte gave an apologetic smile in an attempt to appease her mother. "Lise's brought a new beau back home, right mother?" The girl piped up, making her older sister frown. "Calandra Thalia Ellebore, how many times have I told you not to go jumping to conclusions? He is just an acquaintance and we've known each other for less than a day. Believe me mother, Mr. Sota's reasons for coming are strictly professional. I offered to run an analysis on a metal artifact he has, nothing more."

"Alright, alright. I'll take you for your word Liselotte. But this had better not be another excuse to get out of matchmaking. Back when I was your age, I was already happily married to your father. It's every mother's wish to see their daughters married to a suitable spouse." Mrs. Ellebore threw a distrusting glance at Douken before allowing them inside. "Yes, I know mother. By the way, who else is home?" Liselotte asked as she cleaned her boots off on the welcome mat before stepping in. "Your brothers went out riding with their friends an hour ago. I told them not to come back too late in the evening. The damp air after dark makes one more susceptible to illness. Margaret is currently at her friend Alissa's and will be staying there for the night." Mrs. Ellebore remarked, before quickly ducking into the kitchen to retrieve a dry towel. She then called out as she returned drying her hands, "Would you like something to drink, Mr. Sota?"

Liselotte was trying to figure out what her mother was up to, if she was up to anything at all. She still couldn't shake the feeling that her dear mother was not convinced that Douken wasn't her lover and hoped it was just her imagination. If her hunch was correct, regardless of his answer she would attempt to convince him to stay for dinner. None of her siblings were married yet and she was already practicing her routine as a future mother-in-law.

"I would think it strange if any stranger came into my home unannounced, even if with family," Douken replied, following her through the streets and alleys before arriving at her family's residence. "Still, I must say, your living space does look quite comfortable and inviting," he complimented as he observed the detail of the landscape and brickwork. "If your family was not as you said, I bet it would be nice to invite more friends or colleagues over."

Waiting behind Liselotte, he heard footeps coming towards the door after her declaration. Did her family have a butler coming to greet them? He honestly didn't get why… then again, he hardly understood the mindset of many nobles out there. It was a world he was never raised in, after all. However, instead of an old, sophisticated man in a penguin suit, they were greeted by… a smaller Liselotte. One brimming with energy as she took off nearly immediately. "Your sister, I presume?" he inquired before she declared his presence herself.

"Please forgive the sudden intrusion," Douken added alongside, feeling that was how it should be in a more formal household. Still, unlike his alchemist friend, Douken did not do too much to ready for the upcoming steps. After all, his leather armor looked the way it typically would, and there were little adjustments to be done, not did he mind his hair being a bit disheveled. If anything, he simply let his left hand hang down near the grip of his steel fan while resting his other into his pocket.

"I doubt that you'd need your spear in this case. I believe your current armament would likely be much better suited should my brothers prove themselves trigger-happy." She joked to Douken lightly. "I'll be frank with them all when the time comes, rest assured. Though just for today, I insist that I walk in first. They'll pepper you with questions without letting you get a word in edgewise." she said with a wink. They soon were in view of a modest, pastoral estate. A comfortable, moderately sized country house with a well-kept lane of maples and walnut trees with annual flowers and trimmed shrubbery framed the front entrance. The artful use of fitted stonework leading to brick was warm and welcoming, as lanterns hung from the porch styled after those in Endapano.

Liselotte strode confidently up the steps and knocked on the door, and from the inside the sound of footsteps approaching the door was heard. "I'm home!" she spoke loudly. The door opened with a teenage girl with light brown curls and a light pink dress behind it, bearing strong resemblance to the alchemist. The girl caught sight of Douken behind Liselotte and gasped, holding a hand to her mouth. Her eyes lit up as she exclaimed, "Wait until mother sees this!" As the girl scurried away, Liselotte took and deep breath. Unable to stop her sister from spreading the news, she took the initiative and called out loudly so anyone could hear: "Mother, I've brought a visitor! They'll only be staying for a moment, so there's no need to bring out the tea. He's an acquaintance I've met at Fiddle's bookstore!"

Glancing back at Douken, she gave a wry smile as she said, "There, I've said it–so prepare to brace yourself for the incoming storm." She straightened her clothes and put her hair behind her shoulders as the sound of someone hurrying and nearly running was quickly closing in.

Author: Douken, Posted: Thu May 4, 2017 8:41 PM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

"I wouldn't worry too much about it," Douken replied to her. "I mean, its not like you expect hunks of reanimated dead to fall through the roof of any place, now do you? Sometimes, you just accept the bad luck that passed and continue forth. Not only that, but I am used to working on small coin anyways." Still, it did suck to lose out on that good smelling meal, as well as that tea. Most places he asked for it from often gave him confused looks before cautiously making it. He was glad they made it no question… just sucked that pile of bones ruined it.

Still, it did seem Liselotte did not forget about his offer about performing the study herself on the item, even if its more of the basic level on checking the metal type. Then again, considering the book she bought, she would need to study before being able to test for any alchemic enchantments done to it. Still, her voice was as full of caution as ever, coming from her family issues, mainly her brothers. With a light chuckle, he told her, "Well, why not just tell them the truth? I am here so you can do some tests for me, and in return, I can seek out a resource you may be running low on. Consider it payment for the work," ending it off with a quick wink."As long as they don't get any funny ideas… or do you think we should make a detour to the inn for my spear… just in case?"

Author: Mezereon, Posted: Tue May 2, 2017 11:17 PM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

Liselotte sighed, disappointed. Sure it had been unexpected but she would miss having one of her favorite restaurants closed for repairs. Looking at the time on a sundial mounted in the street she hadn't realized how much time had passed for the guards to clear up the mess and finish questioning. Rubbing one of her temples with her fingers, it was obvious she wasn't in the best of spirits. "I do apologize, truly. Perhaps if we had gone to a different establishment things might not have ended so. If you like, I'd be willing to compensate you for the money you spent before that happened. Seeing that most of the places she frequented would be closing shop soon, she was left with a harrowing decision. There was that option, but should she risk the gamble?

"Hm… I know this is a bit sudden after the turn of events that occurred today, but would you mind stopping by my laboratory? I'll take a small sample of that key of yours there, then run tests on it. That way, if you don't plan on staying in Adeluna after tomorrow I can give you the results of my analysis the next time we meet. It's a bit of a risk, seeing that there is a 75% chance that my brothers are home…" As her voice trailed off it was easy to understand what she was implying through not continuing that sentence. "But rest assured, if I'm right next to you they won't dare to shoot. They wouldn't risk the possibility of injuring their dear younger sister."

Edgar and Galvin. They were her elder brothers, and fine young men. Edgar was an excellent swordsman, having served a brief period of military service in the city guard in Adeluna, while Galvin was an accomplished marksman. Perhaps it was due to their elven ancestry that Galvin was a natural when it came to sharpshooting, as even as a boy he was the best at hitting walnuts out of trees with a sling. Although they were only a year apart, they couldn't be more different. Edgar was very stoic and reserved. A soft-spoken person, he was not very talkative and was fairly straightforward. He wasn't particularly fussy as a child, but his serious face did cause a few misunderstandings. He and Galvin both learned how to ride on horseback in primary school and loved to care for the animals. Although his face didn't show much of how he was feeling, she knew he worried a great deal about his younger siblings and was a mindful man like their father.

Galvin, was the polar opposite. He was the child who had too much energy to spare, always getting himself in trouble. Chatty, glib, and with a streak of confidence a mile wide–he was the one their mother reprimanded the most often. Mrs. Ellebore had always worried that he would become a ruffian or ne'er do well, and thanks to her ever vigilant efforts he did not. That cheeky personality of his never really went away, and he was smart in ways Edgar wasn't. Out of all of their family's children, Galvin was the most like their mother, which was why she knew his tendencies so well. That lively attitude and witty charm was undeniably from her. In all of his playfulness, he became a skilled hunter having a pack of trained hounds to boot. It was rather humorous that his own playful personality helped him bond with them so well, to where Liselotte often teased him of being distantly related to them.

But the greatest challenge of all was her mother. Mrs. Ellebore was a rather particular woman, who held traditional values. Liselotte had been denying her attempts at matchmaking for a while now, and should she bring an unknown stranger of the opposite sex back home, it would start a storm brewing. The most she could do was explain to her mother as best as she could that Douken was not her fiancé or her lover, but an acquaintance whom she planned to run some alchemical tests for. Luckily she knew she had her father on her side, and he would give her support. They both knew that if she had a lover, he would be the first to know. Should Douken agree to come, she had plenty of verbal ammunition ready to defend his honor–and possibly his dignity should the situation arise.

The skeleton was silent as Douken held the fan out, plenty of people looking over at the scene, as he commotion had even drawn outside commotion. After all, the being fell though the roof and into the small shop, alerting the city guards into action as if they were under attack. "Hold!" cried out from the door, causing the public and Douken to turn their gazes to the doorway, seeing two guardsmen barge their way in, one with his sword drawn as the other had his hand on the hilt, as if ready to aid backup. "By order of the Queen, everyone here will be detained and be held for questioning! Anyone who dares resist will speak to my blade!"

However, the knight in the back could not help but look at his action-ready combatant before sighing. "Really? I know this is your first response, but you don't need to call for blood like that," he told him before looking over to the rest of the crowd. "Look, all we want to do is question those here to get a quick gist of the situation to find out the perpetrator of the incident. Judging by the mess," his eyes darted over to the skeleton who had a weapon to this throat by a seated customer, "I can assume it will not take long. Just be warned that escaping will have us treat you like a criminal escaping the scene, and trust me, none of us want to deal with that." Especially when it came to more paperwork than necessary.

Moments passed as the guards went to their duties, talking to the guests and staff to understand what occurred before arresting the skeleton for destruction of private property and disruption of peace. However, it also caused the small shop to close early to begin cleaning and repairs. "Seemed that lucky day turned quite sour," Douken muttered, scratching the back of his head as he stood with Liselotte, watching the harpy move wood panels to cover the hole before any permanent repairs were to undergo. "And it smelled so good, too. Just my luck…" As his stomach grumbled, he held his hand out, muttering a few words before he began to draw in a green energy from the shop, collecting it into his hand before letting it solidify into an apple, taking a quick bite out of it. It never sated his hunger, but it at least made his mind think he was eating something, even if it was to stop his stomach from grumbling more.

"So, what now?"

"It's not like I spend my hours in a dark, dingy room full of vials and alembics. My laboratory is quite well lit and ventilated, and I do have a greenhouse. Mother's just anxious that I spend more time in my study than going out and attending balls. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to strike up a casual conversation when hardly any of the men or women there share a single common interest with me. And I can't exactly go on about the alchemical reactions between use of albedo, rubedo, and nigredo in experiments. The only thing that would likely draw some interest is if I mentioned being able to ferment and distill alcohol…But even then that isn't for drinking purposes." Liselotte sighed as she added, "Oh and a word or warning: both of my brothers happen to be very skilled hunters. I wouldn't want one of them to bring out the hounds, so to speak." She said the latter portion with a mix of seriousness and sarcasm, as she knew what her elder brothers would think as soon as they saw a boy they didn't know come through the door.

As the smell of food told her that their order was ready, she heard a deafening crash as the ceiling caved in from above. Had a meteor fallen into the city? Looking around she saw a pile of bones moving from the rubble while she waved her hand fanning away the dust. She stared with a deadpan expression as she watched an animated skeleton come out from beneath the splintered wooden beams and crack a few jokes even Mr. Fiddle wouldn't have pulled, before attempting to drink her acquaintance's tea. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath as she put a hand to her forehead and let out a deep sigh. "Oh dear… Now sir, we expect you to explain yourself–and without a single bit omitted. I certainly hope you have a good one, or I'm afraid you'll soon become well acquainted with the good earth." As exasperating this turn of events was, Liselotte had the idea of experimenting on the living dead in the back of her mind. She had always wanted to see what kind of reaction she could make if she used bone powder from an animated skeleton…

"I am sure I can spare a sliver off of this," he said, giving her an assuring smile. "After all, this thing already seems pretty beat up, I don't see what another scratch could do to affect it. Then again, the key itself could be the entire thing and not the end bit.," he pondered a bit, his thumb tracing along the curved end of the key. That was the thing with ancient artifacts: As she stated, they loved their puzzles for some strange reason, meaning the key end could not simply be the teeth of the key, but the body itself…. or even the entire thing. Eh, ancient people were weird. "As long as you don't need too large of a chunk, I am sure things will be fine."

"'Allowed home'? Make it seem like you were told to get some fresh air. Too much time in your lab?" he smirked, poking a bit of fun with her. Although when she talked about him coming over, she talked more in a motion of caution. "What, do they get defensive because I may be apart of a team of bandits… or is it more because they are cautious of bringing what they could see as a potential mate?" His tone was full of sarcasm in that statement, seeing as it would be odd if the two started to date after their first meet. At least he would think it a bit awkward. He hardly knew anything of her, so he could not say.

However, his attention was drawn away for the moment as footsteps started to echo from behind along with the smell of freshly-cooked food before turning to see the halfling back with a full tray in her arms. "Well, why don't we worry about that when the time comes?"

However, before any of the food could arrive to their table, the ceiling vibrated with a large impact before collapsing, wood splinters crumbling onto the floor, along with the surprise shocking the halfling into tripping backwards and dropping the contents into a sputtered mess. It was an entrance that certainly drew forth the attention of everyone inside: the Halfling looking up at the mess before her, the harpy decked behind the counter, the orange hair maiden covering her table from the dust, and commotion from the back as they tried to rush to see what happened. Was it some type of assault on the store?

Douken kept his face towards Liselotte as this all happened, but his eyes here locked onto the skeleton before them, trying to cheer up the situation with a terrible pun before taking his glass of tea, moved to drink, and then suddenly dropped it, glass shattering into more of the rubble and the liquid contents being lost to him.

As he spoke coy about his action, the explorer’s left hand moved toward his beltline, hand resting upon the sheath of his weapon, drawing out the folded metal fan to the skeleton’s throat once he finished jesting them. “There is such a thing as a door, you know,” Douken told him, not even bothering to turn his head as his eyes threw daggers upon him. “It is also rude to take what does not belong to you.

“Now then, how do you plan on paying for this damage? The damage to the store, our meals, and our lost time… Or do you simply wished to be exorcised here and now by my blade, or the owner’s?”

"Oh shiii-" There was a crash, then something or somebody fell through the roof. "You're gonna have to drop from a higher altitude, ya wankers!" Wlfrich yelled at the sky, "And don't come back!!!!". Wlfrich looks around and says "Oh, I'm terribly sorry for DROPPING IN!!!!" This bad pun sends groans throughout the ruined café.
"Heh, tough crowd. Sorry about that, I don't know what got into me. Oooooh, is that honey tea!?" Wlfrich, with no regard about the original owner, brought the cup to his mouth then realized he couldn't eat or drink anyway. He then dropped the cup, and looked at Liselotte and Douken. "Did I ruin your date? Sure hope I didn't, you look like a nice couple." Wlfrich commented with "legitimate" concern.

Liselotte considered his suggestion. "Perhaps… Though I'll need to take a small portion of it as a sample. I should have some common metals lying around so I'll see if the properties bear any similarities. If there are enchantments I'll need to check for those first in case someone placed a nasty spell. Though, it might take a week at least before I have any concrete results." Enchanting was fairly new to her, but if it was chemical composition that would be easy. She did a mental count of how many powders she had and whether or not she had them in pure form or not.

"In that case I'll need to bring the key to my laboratory to cut small bit off. Fortunately mother should allow me to come back in the house now." She chuckled to herself remembering what happened that morning. 'A young lady your age shouldn't be wasting her best years cooped in a shed with vials and vapors! Now out with you, and don't come back until it's at least sundown!' Though if Douken were to come with her, she would run the risk of Edgar or Galvin catching sight of him and she knew how they would react if she brought a boy back with her. It wouldn't be any better if Calantha or Margaret saw either–they would tease her endlessly. She'd never hear the end of it. "Though if you do decide to follow…I suggest hiding first. My family can be a bit of a handful when it comes to seeing me bring people over."

A snicker escaped in as he pictured a human with a human female with a bag of tailless scorpions, each one encased in its own sugary shell with a delighted smile as she handed each one out to her terrified students before munching down on the final one with a gleeful grin. It was certainly quite an interesting image in his mind, so saying she would go as far as grilling a kobold tail over a fire…. yeah, that would seem believable.

"If its an easily replicated object, then it could be some type of magic patterns forged into the metal or maybe the metal itself would be a bit rare and have some special properties on where it needs to be used. That, or my grandfather is an idiot, got really excited, and started searching for some fool's gold that doesn't even exist. Without any information, the possibility is till quite possible."

While she did make an offer to see her professor about getting it checked out, Douken had another idea. "That could be an idea… if I had the coin, but maybe you could be of assistance instead, at least in terms of research. I mean, if you are training to be an alchemist, then maybe you can see what type of metal  this is made of. And let's not forget your new research notes," he reminded, motioning his hand over to her tomes of alchemic enchanting. "Would this not be a good time to attempt this study?

"I mean, even if things fail, I won't be too dishardened. After all, I do this sort of job to explore the lands, not search for treasure. Otherwise, I'd be the one taking the jobs to run through ancient tombs. All I do is find them."

Liselotte leaned closer and whispered in a serious tone. "To be honest, I wouldn't put it past her to try something like that. She brought the class candied scorpions once and had enough for everyone–including herself." She returned to her smile as she leaned back. From what Douken was saying, most of the time he was sent to explore areas deemed to dangerous for normal folk to venture in. Often the reasons were financially-based: new veins of metals, an untapped crystal mother lode, and the like. That was to be expected. After all industry and goods took higher priority than archaeological pursuits. Unless said expedition was directly funded by a college or an eccentric and wealthy antiquarian, it usually was for natural resources.

Sipping her tea she listened as Douken revealed his primary reason for his occupation. Ah, a tale of pursuing an ancestor's legacy. The design was simple, but unconventional. No one made keys like that anymore. Perhaps there was something mysterious behind it? "How curious… It does seem far too simple for a lock. Any metal smith or thief could replicate its shape without much difficulty. That must mean it bears a more complex purpose. The ancients were known for their fondness for puzzles, were they not? If it interests you, perhaps an inquiry with historians or archaeological experts might shed some light on its origins." She thought of her professor, the one who had brought the scorpions, and wondered if she should recommend him to ask her. The woman was eccentric to a tee, but had good intentions. He would have to travel to Parvpora to see her though, and wasn't sure if Douken would be willing to take the trip.

That professor of hers had a way of scaring people off with her oddness, or push people to deny from her enthusiasm. However she did specialize in linguistics, and in turn had extensive knowledge on circles and runes by default. She was obsessed with the arcane and languages, and would likely have become a schoolteacher in grammar had she not gained a position in Iria's mage college. She didn't teach classes every year, and often went on her own to study artifacts and decode ancient writings owned by curators.

Taking the seat across from her, he listened a bit to her explain how she got to know this place, being calm, yet a bit coy with her experience with her old professor. "You make it seem like she enjoyed grilled kobold tail on a regular basis," he chuckled, though his attention shortly turning over to the halfling, watching her set the two drinks in front of them before taking off. It seemed Liselotte was one for tea as well… Then again, it was a bit too early for any ale, and, at least for him, he could not stand coffee's bitterness.

Taking the glass, of the pinkish-red liquid, he took a short sip of it to see how they did. The mixture of the sweet and sour from the strawberry, finished off from the fresh slight bitterness. It was a bit of a strange taste, sure, but it was one he liked himself. However, she was quick to place the spotlight on him and his explorations.

"I think I have found maybe… two… ruins? Most of the time, i am following leads on others, though more often than not, the rumors lead to more dangerous areas with beasts for skilled hunters to test themselves to undiscovered quarries full of minerals. I mean, the job I was given that I was preparing for was someone wanting to check this cavern for crystals. You get tales of gemstones being used from everything from jewelry to magic mediums, so it would be a nice find. Of course, they would have explored it themselves if it wasn't for the dangers that reside in the cavern as well.

"Still, you could say the ultimate goal in doing all this searching is to find the piece to this," he told her, moving his hand towards the key dangling around his neck. "Its an old item my grandfather found, and he was pretty hellbent on trying to find the lock its connected to. Knowing our luck, though, its probably some sword that has been too rusted to even be used," he chuckled at the final bit. After all, the key was quite the basic shape.

Liselotte returned the smile coyly. "Of course." Taking a seat in the booth she took off her gloves and set them on the interior side of the table. "I started coming here every month after I returned from my studies in Iria. It was by chance that I was window shopping, and ran into one of my professors here. Like usual she pulled me along and had me sit down and order from the menu, all while chattering compliments about the food. I didn't believe her at first, but I was glad I was proven wrong. She's been known to have strange tastes in things."

A halfling serving girl came out from the kitchen and brought their drinks; a glass of strawberry mint tea for Douken and rose blueberry tea for Liselotte. The rose tea came in a small porcelain pot to keep it warm, and when poured it was vivid fuchsia pink. "Your food will be ready in bit! Enjoy!" The halfling returned to the kitchen with the empty tray. Liselotte took the half-filled teacup in her hands and let it cool until it was lukewarm. "So, tell me about your travels. Have you discovered anything new whilst exploring forgotten cities?" She was quite interested in hearing what he had encountered and if there had been any new artifacts reclaimed from the passage of time.

Once more, a nervous smile came upon his face, considering he was not exactly used to being addressed by his surname. After all, he had always been addressed by his first name, even when he was taking a job from nobles, so he never thought he exactly deserved such treatment. However, it was also hard for him to decline her on his bit of discomfort, thinking that it was more personal for her to address folk by their first name. It was something he could get used to, at the very least. At the very least, she was willing to guide him around town.

The place she led him to was one she seemed quite fond of, just by hearing her talk about how familiar she was with how they handled specials along with being such a customer that they know her order by heart. He even couldn't help but comment, "Sounds to me you are quite the regular here," with a slight smirk before heading up to the counter.

"HIII!!!!" the harpy exclaimed, her feathery wing arm frilling out as she raised it high in her excited greeting, a quill between her talons before dropping it down, already writing things down after her eyes flicked over from Liselotte. "What would you like to order, sir?" He gave her credit: her spunk and energy was a nice welcome.

"Hello. May I please have your special today along with…. ummm… how about a strawberry mint tea?"

"You got it!" With her talons quickly moving, scribing down the order, she was quick to tear it off before sending it into the back, calling out, "ORDER UP!" before turning back around to the customers, holding her wing out to show them to one of the open tables.

Giving her a welcoming smile, Douken turned around to Liselotte, asking her, "So, shall we?" before heading her to a nearby empty booth.

After he had introduced himself to her, she smiled and did the same. "Likewise, Mr. Sota. I am Liselotte Ellebore. If you're looking for something to cleanse the palate without having to empty your coin purse, I know just the place. I would be more than willing to act as your guide around the city." As she exited the bookstore, she gave him a polite nod in response to his courtesy. Out on the main street, she led him down a busy avenue of shops. "Fortunately for you, they're having a discount on the weekly special. The day they choose is random; that must mean today is your lucky day."

She then stopped in front of a cafe with a striped awning in white and burgundy. A small hand-painted wooden sign read, 'Welcome!' in cursive. Liselotte opened the door and beckoned for him to come in. The interior was cozy, with the walls a warm saffron and the wood paneling a rich maple. The back wall which connected to the kitchen had various herbs and spices growing from pots hanging from the shelves, and there was a harpy girl at the counter. There were many wooden bistro tables and chairs arranged throughout the cafe and three of them were already occupied. At one of them was a bespectacled girl with light orange hair drawn up into two braids drinking a cup of cream with a spot of coffee. Beside the door was a chalkboard with the weekly special highlighted in blue chalk. It read: 'Terra Green Salad & Onion Soup'.

"This is place is called 'Bay and Rosemary'. Their dishes are made using seasonal ingredients year-round, and they're best known for their seafood and fresh salad. The menu changes weekly with what ingredients are available locally." Putting her hands on her hips, she grinned. "So, what would you like? The waitress already knows what I usually order, so no need to wait for me."

He smiled as she agreed to his offer to explore, partially afraid she was going to turn him down for whatever reason. Then again, they were still strangers who simply met up in a book store who were both seeking information upon different arts. He should be more surprised that she did accept in the first place.

However, before a word could leak out of his mouth, his stomach made a reply of his own, grumbling out into the empty shop. "Maybe a decent place for a meal for starters? I mean, I am no local here, and pub food connected to my inn tends to get pretty boring after a couple days. Besides, if there is a certain taste known to the city, i may as well experience it for myself, right?" It was the best thing he could think of aside from simply blindly exploring the marketplace.

Giving the fan a quick spin through his fingers, flipping around to more of a backhand grasp, he slid it back into its sheath as he held out his other to her. "And if we are going to spend some time together, I think we should be on a name basis at least. I am Douken Sota. A pleasure to meet you."

After introductions were passed to each other, he headed for the door, opening it up with the bell's jingle, holding it open for his new acquaintance.

Liselotte watched as he traced the shape of a rune onto his metal fan. He did have a point there; verbal invocation was far faster if it was a simple phrase. Runes in comparison seemed better suited for scrolls and enhancements to be used in emergencies. She wondered how long a rune's effects could be maintained if used in such a manner. If someone had a set of blank playing cards, they could prepare a deck of spells in advance and need only to draw the card and activate the rune's intended ability. That certainly would make things convenient, however could that be applied to transmutation as well? She would need to sort out the scale and effectiveness of transmutation circles later on her own time.

When he asked if she would like to accompany him, she smiled. "I still have a few hours left until my distillation is finished. I don't see why not. What places do you have in mind?" She knew Adeluna City like the back of her hand, and if he wanted to find a place she was more than willing to act as a guide for the time being. She was on holiday, after all. Her mother would likely keep her out of the house until she felt she had spent enough time away from her laboratory and greenhouse.

Douken couldn't help but scratch the back of his head as she complimented his ability to being self-taught. It is true that when most people think of a mage, they think of magical energies weaved about, the elements submitting to their power as they dominated the realm around themselves… and here he was with a small array of pretty much parlor tricks. Yet still, she was making it seem like he was more well-adapted in the art through practical use than through theory. It wwas a nice compliment, but not really one he thought he really deserved.

"Its not just the flashiness that draws them in. In a reaction-based situation like the heat of battle, a quick chant is still much faster than drawing out a rune. Watch." Pulling out his steel fan into his left hand, he concentrated his energies into his right index and middle fingers, causing them to once again resonate with mana. Placing them on the the top, palm parallel to the fan, the mana seemed to have sparked to the object, forging a line as he moved his hand to draw a half circle downwards, followed by a quick, upwards motion to the middle. Then, he divided his fingers, splitting the line in two, as if adding branches before a short movement down, curved towards the center and sharply back up before releasing his hand off the fan blade. As the mana crafted on the item dissipated, the fan itself began to glow in a faint light.

"With my skill-level, I do that to grant myself a decent light source when needed… And yet a practiced made only need at most three words to do the same." Moving his middle finger through the fan, the light quickly dissipated, as if the last movement ruined the crest he created.

"And while I would enjoy looking that over, its still a tome way above my skill level. I think someone else could have better use of it than for for the moment.

"Now then, why don't we see what else is around, eh? That is, if you don't mind my company for the afternoon?"

Author: Mezereon, Posted: Sun Apr 16, 2017 6:44 PM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

"Self-taught I see. Nothing wrong with that. Some say experience is the best teacher when it comes to practical matters. One can learn more about how to perform a skill through doing than taking notes on someone else's attempts." As he told her more about himself, she found his line of work fascinating. Frankly what he was doing wasn't too different from her trip to the steppes, only he was searching for ruins instead of stones or minerals.

As the conversation moved on to the runic arts, Liselotte unfortunately had to agree with what he was saying. "Yes, it's such a shame. Nowadays aspiring mages prefer flashier, dramatic spells thanks to the novels circulating about. Blasting enemies with fire or calling down lightning from the heavens is far more impressive than creating magic circles. And to think the first uses of the arcane arts came in the form of using such symbols… If you're still thinking about purchasing that tome, why don't you ask Mr. Fiddle to put it in reserve for you? I'm sure he'd more than happy to." She whispered the last bit to him, as the gnome was currently dusting the shelves.

Author: Douken, Posted: Sun Apr 16, 2017 4:44 PM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

Hmm, I see," he said, catching the twinkle in her eyes as would anyone talking about their crafts before the gnome returned from the back. It is always amazing to watch those partake in what they are skilled in, whether it be a blacksmith under the forge's heat, hammer in hand as he meticulously worked on metal gear for those who ordered them to bards singing tales of grand tales they learned about, the occasional danger moving as if to act out the scene herself. I wonder what a real alchemist lab is like? popped into his head as he let the two do business, confirming the purchase before the maiden turned her attention back to him, newly acquired texts in hand and question in lips.

As for his answers to such inquiries, Douken let off a sincere smile, as he flatly stated, "Nope. In fact, I think my magic potential is a bit below average at best, so for me, simple chants or runic casting is my way to go, and even then, I often use them more for utility than defense."  He even gave the handle of his steel fan a quick pat as if to reference such an idea. "Forgive me if I had ruined your expectations.

"Rather, I am an explorer, one who seeks out new locations, ruins, and the like. If I find something that can be of use, I make my reports to the city heads and leave it them on what to do. One job was looking at was going to be tricky, so part of me was hoping to find something to help me out in the future. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side, considering Runic Arts are pretty much a dead trade. Most that exist are typically too advanced for my baseline."

Author: Mezereon, Posted: Sun Apr 16, 2017 1:26 PM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

"Ah yes, that is what most people assume. Although alchemy is famous for the concept of transmutation, one must not forget that the art began with theories of the elemental essence in all things. Admittedly studying bodily humors and associating them with the elements has been largely disproved, however that doesn't mean it shouldn't apply to creatures. Also, it has a higher chance of success requiring less precision. Much safer to practice."

Liselotte's eyes shone when the man inquired about the books she was purchasing. Alchemy was a wonderful, yet commonly misunderstood science among the populace. Yes there were those incidents when an attempt at transmutation went wrong and things were lost to compensate for failing to pay the costs, but those were rarities–uncommon accidents. A respectable alchemist wouldn't have conducted such brash and foolhardy experiments without knowing how much it would require. With luck, perhaps she would inspire others to learn more about it and come to know its wonders as she had.

Mr. Fiddle returned from the back room whistling, and hopped up onto his stool behind the counter. "Now, let's see which ones you'll be buying today miss. Hm, hm, and hm. That'll be three hundred crescents total." Liselotte set the money on the counter. "A fair price. Books like these don't come around often." The price was rather steep, but she knew the gnome wasn't the type to purposefully inflate them. The goods he sold were indeed rare and the genuine article, and he couldn't undersell them if he wanted to compensate for how much he spent in getting them. Bargaining was near impossible, but you were guaranteed for every purchase. This store wasn't Mr. Fiddle's bread and butter, so he was in no rush to make a sale. With the transaction completed, she tucked the books away into her bag.

"Thank you Mr. Fiddle!" Turning her attention to the other customer in the shop she inquired, "I take it you are a spell caster then? Where did you receive your education?" There were plenty of mages and scientists graduation from Iria nowadays. It was always nice to meet new people from her alma mater.

"Thank you," he told her, taking the tome in hand and skimming the pages. Sure enough this was about runes, crests, and magic symbols and how to craft them, but what it was showing was way too advanced for his skillset. After all, the book showed signs and drawings that more represented three-dimensional air arts in the first few pages, and here he was still stuck drawing two-D with a surface to place it upon. "Its either nothing at all, or the advanced art it seems," he muttered to himself with a quick sigh before closing it once more. Not only that, but the pricetag was way out of his range. He'd have to take a job or two even think about affording it, and who knew how long this tome would last on the shelves.

Still, he knew how to defend himself with his weapons, so taking on such practices would be only a staple to what he knew, so he was fine not rushing out to get the coin for it, thus leading him to return it to the shelf.

However, the burst of energy that came from the black tome forced himself to turn about, drawing out his fan as he moved in close before it found itself to be slammed shut, stilling the air once more. He had no idea what kind of being was sealed inside that book, but his instincts always told him to be defensive about them. Never know what catches came with them.

Still, it seemed the gnome was used to this sort of thing, laughing it off as he handled the tome casually into the back. by then, the blonde mistress was ready to leave as she placed a few books onto the counter, ready to leave. Taking a glimpse on the cover, Douken couldn't help but think out loud, "Alchemic enchantments? Never heard of such a study like that. I mean, when I think alchemy, I think of creating, not imbuing."

Author: Mezereon, Posted: Sun Apr 16, 2017 11:13 AM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

Liselotte turned to see a young man whom she hadn't noticed enter the store. "Oh by all means, go ahead. If it's what you're looking for I suggest you purchase it. You might never find a book like this ever again, especially in this condition. Now…where was that set of encyclopedias on Arriese flora?" She moved aside allowing him to access the book, moving on to another part of the small bookstore. Picking up a tome with a black cover and silver detail, she opened the cover only for it to come alive with a strange humanoid figure emerging from the pages. "What the-" The being began to speak in a distorted, echoing voice. "Who hath awakened me from my slumber? Fair maiden, I beseech you that I may set it in my praise–would thou tell me thy n-"

The voice was cut off by the sound of the book being slammed shut. Liselotte had forcibly closed the book with a look of displeasure on her face. "…Mr. Fiddle. It seems you need to have someone check the contents of your shipments before sending them to the shelves. I'm not sure whether I should feel flattered, or offended." The gnome shopkeeper came down from his stool and looked over the tome she had pressed between her hands. "Well would you look at that. Never seen one of those before. I'll need to put a special lock on this one and a written warning. On the bright side, it doesn't seem to be cursed!" She handed it off to him, and he went to the back room. After that fiasco, Liselotte decided she had seen enough ancient tomes for the day. Taking an alchemist's writings on enchantments, she waited for Mr. Fiddle to return to the counter.

Author: Douken, Posted: Sun Apr 16, 2017 7:44 AM, Post Subject: Muses and Study [Open up 2]

He sighed as he was trice more shot down on his search for what he was looking for. As he figured, there was certainly more into chanted chanted spells, as becoming an expert with them allowed for much faster and quicker chanting, almost to the point where they have to simply say the spell's name, if that. Mastering runecraft was more like setting traps or into small items. Some stories had even imbued the idea with enchanted tarot cards, using the faces of the Major Arcana with their own spell effects, but alas, even that had been dying down with the power of enchantments for equipment and the such. You wouldn't use a shield to throw a fireball, and if that was what you wanted, then just cast it. "Thanks anyways," he sighed before taking off.

Looking around, Douken thought to himself, Think about it like this: You are looking for a rare treasure. Would it be in a large, open region, or something more small, and collected? That was when his ears caught ear of the ringing bell, turning his attention down to a small bookstore. It looked a bit more rusty than other store about, but that only added to its charms… and to his curiosity.

Soon to follow after the previous person, the explorer headed into the shop as well, letting their small talk act as ambience to the store as he took a moment to examine the shelves. He was quite surprised to see so many old tomes and the such that had been abandoned long ago. Taking one off the shelf and opening it up, he was confronted with  text within ancient writing. Maybe it was Old Draconian? Well, why bother skimming if you couldn't even read it, so he closed it and rested it back on the shelf.

Just in time to hear the old gnome's bad pun, causing Douken to snicker a bit.

It was a good moment to catch the conversation as the talk came up to something that sounded more like that he was after. Heading over to the woman as she placed the tome back on the shelf, Douken spoke up, "Maybe because its treated like a dead art that its still in its prime," he added in as he stepped up next to the noble woman. "Forgive my intrusion, but may I see that tome? Its actually something I've been researching recently myself."

Adeluna City was bustling and lively as ever. The young lady stepped out into the streets of the market and smiled when some of the shop owners who were well acquainted with her waved to her. It was good to be back home, and for once she was taking a holiday from her work. As much as she would have loved to continue spending weeks catching rare specimens of beetles for their shells, she needed to set aside some quality time for herself. It was easy to become wholly engrossed with testing formulas and recording minutiae when it came to alchemy–the results could vary greatly with a few pinches of powder. So while she waited for her essence of antelope horn to finish distillation, it was time to take a walk around the market.

After passing a few bakeries and restaurants, she arrived at the place she was looking for: a small bookstore that sold more obscure volumes on less popular subjects. Contrary to stores that sold those bawdy romance novels and tales of adventure which sold for a handful of silvers each, the books here were much more rare and costly. If you were lucky, you could find tomes which were no longer in circulation, but most of the stock here changed depending on what the owner had. Pushing open the door, a bell attached to a rope jingled as she came in.

"Hello Mr. Fiddle, any new volumes since my last visit?" An elderly gnome with special spectacles made in Iria peered over the lenses from behind the counter. "Is that you Miss Ellebore? Back from your little trip up north I see! One of these days you should bring me a rack of elk antlers as a gift! Or better yet, maybe transmute that old paperweight of mine into a lump of gold!" He laughed as Liselotte feigned taking offense. "Oh Mr. Fiddle, I may be an alchemist but I'm afraid I don't do miracles. But I might be able to get you a real moose head to hang over your fireplace. So how's your wife? Has Ethel been giving you trouble again?"

The gnome pushed up his spectacles and grinned ear to ear. "Not any more than she normally does. But she's been terribly zealous when it comes to grooming her birds. Wants Maybelle and Lillie to win best in show this year. Keeps saying how she needs to watch their diet so their feathers get a nice sheen. Sounds like a whole bunch of fuss over ruffling a few feathers." He slapped his knee and chortled, as Liselotte shook her head. "If you keep making jokes like those you'll be the one ruffling Ethel's feathers. Hm… 'A Treatise on the Mechanics of Signs and Circles'. It's rather thick. Where did you get this?"

The shopkeeper leaned out of his chair to see what book she was holding. "Oh that one. Got a hold of it with a few others on magic and the like last week. Seems like a collector wanted to update their collections with new tomes and wanted to see how much they could get for them. They're in prime condition; bet they've never even been used before." After flipping through the pages, she returned it to the shelf. "It looks more like a book on sorcery. Not the type of subject I'm looking for. If it was an explanation on deciphering runic symbols then I'd give it a try, but it seems to have more diagrams depicting how to arrange them up properly." She resumed browsing the shelves for anything else that caught her eye.

A meditative sigh… Focus drawn towards the ends of his fingers before his index finger sparked to life with a green flicker at the tip.A light rest on the handle before dropping it down, a quick zag left before a long zag right, a trail of light following his finger before a similar light fell on his middle, before curving it through the long zag, not even lifting his index finger, but soon to pull away. The drawing he made with his hand lingered on the handle before flashing away, followed by the quick snap of the lock.

This would have been more impressive if he had not one done it on the other side of the door, but if he didn't practice the spell on said lock every time he left his inn room. He wasn't sure if the lock was so easy to pick that the rune he had to draw was simple, or if it was more because he had gotten so used to testing it on the same item, that he knew the pins already. "There should be a better way to practice this..>" he muttered to himself as Douken left his inn room, locking the door behind him normally before heading out into the main plaza with only the fan resting on the back of his belt.

He was told that magic was a nice tool to have when it come to exploring dangerous caverns. After all, what good is a single spear when facing down a horde of wild beasts? A blast of fire could do much more damage after all. Not only that, but the spell he jsut practiced was good at unlocking nice secrets. However, he could hardly get the chanting mumbo-jumbo when it came down to magic. Nah, for him, rune-casting, the art of drawing insignias and symbols for spellcraft, felt better to him. Then again, he often fell asleep to big book anyways, and pictures were nicer to look at.

From the plaza, Douken took himself over to the marketplace, muttering to himself, "I wonder if there are any tomes that give more detail to them?"
