Ghosts? Pfft, I ain't afraid of no ghosts.”

The loud boasting came from Gabriel, of course as he was entertaining a table surrounded by a few of the other patrons. He had already had his fill about them questioning whether it was truly a good idea to stay in this inn or not, given its dark past. He had been overhearing some of them claim that ghosts were to blame for the bizarre occurrences over the years. But did he fear such things? Perhaps he didn’t, but from the show he was putting on, one would think that he was either very brave or very stupid.  “Yup, I couldn’t care less whether they’d try something on me or not. The fire happened a long time ago, it's time for them to move on.” Gabe looked onto one of the women around him and gave her that dashing smiling of his,  “You are welcomed to come join me in my room, if you want. I’m sure that we can prove that the ghosts won’t bother us.” He winked at her and she smiled in returned before he turned his attention to the rest of the small party.

Of course there were doubters that felt he was all hot air and was speaking from both sides of his mouth, but the werewolf didn’t truly care. He came here because there was no other inns or taverns for miles and it was far too late to keep trekking until he found one. Kicking his feet up onto the table, he took to his mug, filled with rum with a touch of honey. Perhaps he had one too many, given that it was his fifth one within two hours, but he felt just fine. A little lightheaded, but nothing he hadn’t felt before.

“You speak so highly of yourself, but I think you just talk a lot of crap”, proclaimed one of the older men, having seen at least fifty summers in his time. “Well, old timer, if you are so scared, then why be here, especially at this hour?”, he retorted.

“Cause, it's cold and rainy, and you know damn well that there’s no other stop for days, you cheeky bastard!” The wolf merely smiled at him before downing some more of his mug. Exactly, they were all stuck here, so they’d might as well enjoy it. For Gabriel, he would likely take some bottles and perhaps one or two of these lovely ladies with him back to his room for some fun and then sleep for the next day or so before being on his merry way. There was no way in hell that he was going to be scared off by figments of everyone’s imagination. He called over to the waitress to order another bottle as he spotted from the far wall what seemed like blood running down it until he blinked and there was nothing there. “Ghosts. What a joke.”

Lightning crashed through the sky, as the wolf demon rode through the rain. The lightning was the only light that lit the way. With her hood over her face didn’t stop the rain from soaking her hair and face. Strands of black hair stuck to her face. Along with the thundering sky, came the thundering of hooves. “I hate storms! Hate them hate them hate them!!” The horse neighed at the sound of the thunder that was right above them. Her legs started to move faster against the rain and wind. “Calm down, Athena!” The wolf demon yelled over the roaring wind. As they grew closer to the Roadhouse Inn, Athena grew even more uneasy.

The inn finally came into view. It had been a long time since Katerina had been to the inn.  The horse just before reaching the house, the sudden jolt made Katerina almost be flung from the horse. “Athena!” She yelled as she stood up, it only took her a moment to realize how quiet her horse was. “What is wrong?” She asked while  her hand rubbed Athena’s wet neck. “I don’t like it here. Something is off.” She said calmly, her hooves didn’t move from their spot in the mud. “Must be the ghost.” Katerina said leaning down onto the horse neck, “It will be okay. Let’s get you out of this rain.” With that, the wolf demon lead her horse into the stables.

Upon ending the stables, a young man no older than twenty walked over to her. “Hello, Miss.” He said with a smile. “Take care of her please, and she is a bit uneasy right now.” With a nod, the boy took the reigns. “The storm is making all the horses uneasy.” He motioned towards the many horses behind him. “That’s what he thinks…” Athena neighed in response. “Whoa girl, it will be alright.” He soothed patting her neck. “I'll be here till the rain stops.” With a nod, she left the stables and ran into the inn.

Rushing into the inn, she sighed as she felt the warmth hit her face. Removing her hood, soft black waves fell down her back. Bright blue eyes looked around the bar. That was what she needed, a drink. While walking up to the bar, she heard laughter from a nearby table. Glancing over, many men and women sat at the table, all focusing on a man. He didn’t believe in ghost apparently.  Her eyes locked on a friendly face which made the woman smile. She couldn’t help herself, so she walked over the table, placing a hand on the stranger’s seat. “Everything is real here in Revaliir. You’ll be a fool not to believe.” Her voice was smooth and she didn’t pause for a second.

“Katerina!!!! Look at you!!” The old man slammed his hands on the table and pushed himself up. “It’s been so long! Now that is the company I would like to have.” With a smile, the wolf demon and the old man walked to the bar. “How long has it been? Ten years?! ….You haven't aged a day.” A laugh left Katerina’s lips. The old man was sure excited to see her. With a pat on her shoulder, the old man ordered them some drinks.

“Barkeep… Can I get a place for the night?” After the old man finally retired for the night, it was now the wolf demon’s turn. Handing the barkeep a few coins, he in returned handed her a key. “Top floor, second to the last door on the left.” With a nod, she headed up to her room. As soon as she entered, she removed her cloak and fell onto the bed. “Hopefully, no one dies in this place while I am here…” She whispered while closing her eyes.

The storm was getting more ferocious by the minute, the rainfall grew heavy and the lightning streaked through the skies and flashed from the window nearby. Still, Gabe seemed contempt with his surroundings and he wasn’t going to be deterred by such petty fears like the rest of them. Up to this point, he’d say that he was the most terrifying thing here and yet he was being as gentle as a newborn lamb right now. But that didn’t mean that it couldn’t change on the drop of a hat should things get unsavory for his taste. The man’s words did little to challenge him, it anything it showed how much he and the rest of them allowed for the tall tales and the unexpected and unfortunate events to spook them so much. While Gabriel did find some pity for them, he was trying to drown out what remained of it with some different spirits, the ones that came in bottles.

More people came inside from the storm and for the most part he paid little attention. This place was bound to receive more as the night progressed and they would seek the closest shelter, which was here of course. Instead he sought company in his mug, downing a good bit of it until he felt a hand against his seat and he looked on while chugging. A pretty little lady invaded his personal space and was seemingly criticizing him. Out of all the names he had endured and had thrown at him, “fool” was actually one of the nicer things. That and he was liking the way she was looking, so he didn’t truly hold it against her. He merely smiled as he continued to drink and observed her and the old fart until they left for other ventures.

]“A pity”, he swore beneath his breath before turning to other woman he was fancying from before. “But there are always situations that we can may the best of”, he spoke, flashing her a friendly grin before calling on the barkeep to get a bottle of red wine for her. She looked back with an interested look and it widened his smile. Not too much longer after that, they both left with the bottle in hand and went up to his room, both feeling the effects of taking drink after drink at the table. They nearly fell over one another as they noisy entered his room and fell onto the bed before lust took over them. As he helped her undress, he couldn’t help but to noticed a small flame from the corner of his eye. Assuming that it was merely a candle of something, he went along his business and the two started to make love when the flame ignited into an inferno and the shock of it all made the wolf leap out of bed with wide eyes before taking off and nearly knocked the door to his room off. “Fire!”, he called out to the rest of the people from out in the halls, wearing nothing but the sheet that was around his lower half. “Fire!”

Memories of the inn started flooding back to her. The man she met who made her smile, only to be killed by a ghost. With a frustrated sigh, the wolf demon sat up. She hadn’t thought about him in a long time. “Chris…” She whispered while looking into the mirror before her. She had never been in love before, but if he had lived… “He would probably be my first love…” She thought to herself as her bright blue eyes looking back at her. The sudden movement of the curtain behind her made her jump from the bed. Her eyes looking at the curtain, only to have it move again. Moving slowly to it, she ripped the curtain to the side. A sigh left her lips while her eyes looked upon the open window before her. The rain drops was soothing to her, she was surprised not to hear the rain earlier. The lightning and thunder had stopped, but only for a few moments. The rain kept driving down with force.

“F***king place…” Katerina said aloud before dropping the curtain back in place. The inn had the wolf demon a bit jumping. Deep inside she knew something was going to happen, but she prayed it didn’t. With a sigh, she headed to the wash bowl. It laid on top the dresser, right in front of the mirror. Reaching the dresser, she poured the water in, and splashed her face. Her eyes looked into the mirror again. Her eyes looking around behind her. Her skin started to crawl, something was in the room with her, but she didn’t see anything. Grabbing the towel near the wash bowl, she dabbed her face.

In that moment, she heard a voice just outside her door. “Fire!” She heard over and over. Running out of her room. She was only wearing her pale tank top and pants. Her eyes fell upon the man from earlier, he only had a sheet on.  She felt the heat and smoke coming from the his room. “Move!” She cursed at him while running into the room. Her eyes saw the woman on the other side of the room, cowering in the corner. Her eyes saw the woman on the bed, her throat cut. Her eyes widen and the fire caught her attention.

The fire engulfed the curtains and was moving on towards the bed. “Shit.” She cursed before throwing up her hands. Stream of ice shot out, she shot her ice on the base of the fire. She kept her ice going until the flames diminished. Gasps was heard behind the man. Turning around, her eyes went to the body, then the man. Other men gathered behind him, looking upon the woman. Dead in the bed, her throat cut and blood poured from the bed to the floor. She felt the wetness on her foot, looking down her eyes saw that her bear feet was in a small puddle of blood. Stepping out of it slowly, her eyes went to the man. “This is how you get your rocks off?” She asked crossing her arms. She was just an innocent girl.

Gabe never suspected anything happened to the girl he had relations with; he assumed that she was right behind him like any other sensible person that wanted to live and not perish in a fire. It didn’t even dawned on him that he was practically running around naked. People were starting to come out of their rooms as he continued to shout and warn them to flee. In his panic, he hadn’t realized that the woman that passed by him to head to his room was the same one from before- the one that was friends with that old geezer downstairs. Once that came to his realization, he also started to spin around, looking for any sign of his lady friend.

“What the…she was just right behind me…right”, he murmured to himself more so than out loud. Dread came over him as he realized the terrible yet possible answer- that she was still inside the burning room.

The other woman was able to tend to the flames until they were put out and a crowd formed around the sight of the now dead woman. He looked on with disappointment across his face. It was a damn shame, she was so young and firm… Looking closer to her, he noticed the coup de grace on her and was puzzled. There was no one in the room besides the two of them, at least as far as he knew. When the woman addressed him, Gabe gave her a strange look.

“Wait…you think I did this?” He pointed and gestured to his body, “Clearly if I did it, wouldn’t there be her blood on me? And no, I like a lot of things, but murdering pretty women ain't one of them, love.” He didn’t care what she or the other people thought, he knew that he was innocent in this situation. Hell, he still didn’t know what caused the fire, maybe the same person that must have camped out his room had set it on fire and killed her. “You all wanna know who killed the poor girl? Find the culprit that set my room ablaze, and you’d probably find the person that did this.”

Sighing, Gabriel went to retrieve his shirt and pants and quickly slipped them on. “As for me, I’ll find them then and I’ll make them pay”, he said in a low, dangerous voice that seemed out of place for him. They would pay for trying to kill him, for the death of the girl and for ruining a good time and his room. He started to look push the crowd and head downstairs. There was nothing more up here as far as any clues or such and he wanted to see who wasn’t accounted for.

Katerina stood facing the man. She was unsure if he had killed the woman on the bed. It was most likely a ghost. Unless he was here to kill people for sport. Either way she had to find out who killed the innocent woman. His sudden outburst made her eyes widen for a moment. “You could of been really careful.” She thought to herself, but that didn’t convince her that he did it. It was the ghosts.

The man voiced that they should find the culprit. “Like it was a something of this world.” She thought to herself. Deciding not to deal with this any longer, she headed out the room while the man was dressing. Moving through the people who crowded the hall, she finally made it to her door. “Katerina.” She heard the voice of the old man as she reached for the doorknob. Turning around to look at him, she sighed. She knew he was about to ask her something. “Please watch over him, he doesn’t know what he is getting into.” The old man said in a low voice. Then another person came up from behind him. “He probably killed that poor girl! You have to make sure he doesn’t kill anyone else!” Apparently, he didn’t hear what the old man had said to her. Some of the other people agreed.

A sigh left Katerina's lips as she nodded. “Alright. Fine. I will watch him.” She couldn’t say no to all these people. Dropping her hand from the doorknob, she headed down the hall to find the man. He only had a few minutes head start, he couldn’t be far. Picking up her pace a bit, she headed down the stairs. She caught him at the end of it. “Hey. Wait.” She called to him. “These guys want me to watch you.” She said as her eyes looked over him. He didn’t look like a killer just a womanizer. The thought almost made her laugh. “I don’t know what you think you are going to find. Ghost run this Inn.” She said glancing around the area.

Another scream came from the back of the inn. Hurrying she ran through the doors that headed into the bar area then to the back of the bar through the door. She fell to a sudden stop as her eyes stared at a man hanging from the ceiling, dead. Another death. “Holy shit.” She said with a sigh. How many would die before the morning?
