Ernest laughed. "They ought to expect that getting to see the world isn't that easy. Especially since you seem to have a… penchant for making things turn out differently than people want them." She grinned, remembering her disastrous attempt to stow away on a caravan that had led to her getting stuck in the forest with the group of soldiers. "Except for you, though. You always manage to get out of everything." Not that she didn't. It just usually took her longer.
"And what do your soldiers do in those far away, foreign lands?" she asked. "Are they places you're trying to conquer?" She wondered where it was he sent his soldiers off to. Probably some kingdom she'd never even heard of.
She glared at him, but she wasn't really angry anymore. "I bought food. I do try to do things honestly when I can, you know." It had hardly been all this time, either, though it had probably felt longer on the battlefield. "Yes, I'm going to keep travelling," she said. "I never seem to be able to stay in one place very long."

"
To travel and explore the world?" Asked Silanus once again. "
Curiously, that is something I hear a lot in the barracks. These ones you see right here. It's a popular saying among the soldiers, to explore unexplored lands…" Then, with a mocking grin, he continued to speak: "
Little they know I'd put them in guard duty ha-ha!"
After saying that, Silanus kept walking, surrounding the barracks. It was a large, sturdy place; it had to be because it was the home of many young soldiers. "
Here, young men and sometimes women prove their valor and join the legion. The best ones are taken to far away, foreign lands…"
After a brief moment of silence, Silanus turned, with a sarcastic smirk on his face and asked: "
Oh, I wonder how you survived without me all this time. Did you gather your own food, bought it? Or simply said you were my guest and claimed free food?" A short laugh took place. "
Where will you go then, Ernest? To resume your exploring I assume?" Asked Silanus, once again.

Ernest smiled. "That is an interesting myth. I will remember that." She paused, considering. "I can see where, if you believe the myth, it would be very useful for ending disputes and the like." She grinned. "I wish I knew something that simple to end fights."
"You don't care for her much, I take it?" asked Ernest. She had been careful not to insinuate that she didn't like Ilia much either, just in case Silanus really liked her or something. "I didn't find her very… welcoming, that's for sure. Venomous… probably not. She wasted no time in telling me what everyone is saying about me behind my back. There are some pretty wild rumours out there."
Ernest followed Silanus to what looked like the barracks. He surprised her, though. Instead of telling her about the history of the place, he asked her what she wanted to do. She raised an eyebrow. She figured she could tell him. "It's probably crazy, but I decided I want to learn everything about the world. How it works, what it does… everything." She grinned. "I suppose I have big dreams, but no one criticizes me. Granted, almost nobody knows, either."

Before answering Ernest, Silanus stared at his image, which was being reflected in the clear fountain water. "
Yes, the myths say that. Sometimes parents wash their children in fountains like these to forge a bond with them, lovers do the same, or in rare occasions, brothers wash their hands and shake them after a disagreement. That way, their discussion won't weaken their family bond…" Said Silanus, who stopped looking at his reflect and looked back at his guest.
"It's a nice belief, although I don't know if I'd believe in it. It's just water from a mountain, after all." Finally said the general, as he walked around the fountain. It didn't surprise him that Ernest met his bothersome cousin, even though he didn't even know she was still in the city, as she usually leaves often. "
It's no surprise, given the fact that she hangs out with these… Ladies who enjoy spreading rumors and gossip." After he finished saying that, Silanus stopped walking around and sat on the fountain's edge. "
I hope she was not as venomous as usual. A Gorgon she is, I dare to say."The general stood up and walked away, assuming Ernest would follow him, but not checking if she was. It was a short walk they had, a silent one too. They arrived at the military barracks, a place Silanus was sure Ernest had not been in to. Turning around, the governor mentioned: "
May I ask you something, Ernest? I think I have not asked this before, as it is a rather serious question… But, what do you think, that your purpose is? You gather money to eat and find a place to sleep, but what would you truly like to do, uh?" His face was calm, rather confident, most likely. Truth is, that Silanus enjoyed talking about serious, quite deep topics instead of the usual chatter. "
I'd say my purpose is to bring a little order to these people, obviously. But that's not secret, honestly. What is your quest here, ah?"

A small part of Ernest was surprised that Silanus had any vulnerabilities when fighting, although he had a point about being unable to sense objects. Ernest had, in the past, wished that she had such an ability. "Neither am I," she said, "although I have wished to be on occasion. It would be very useful to know where everything is all the time."
She laughed. "What? Me, cause trouble? As if I did that ever." She knew her reputation as a troublemaker, though, even though it may not have been here. "I'm glad to learn you won, though."
She was still smiling when she answered his question. "They're beautiful. Do you not use magic in them at all?" It sounded like they didn't, which was surprising - Ernest hadn't known that was possible. "The things people can create are amazing."
It was hard not to giggle as he talked about the myths. He was so clearly uncomfortable that it was a little funny. "Yes, curious," she agreed. "Myths are always interesting, though. Even if they are a little odd." She considered this. The things she was learning today.
"Oh, did I tell you, I met your cousin today," Ernest said. "I don't think she likes me very much."

When Ernest mentioned how Silanus was a fighter by trade, he could not help but smirk. "
You flatter me, Ernest. Nevertheless, few people can sense a stone coming at their head… I am not one of those." It seemed Ernest was not finished exploring the city, which made Silanus' pride shine; the city was indeed large, it was no doubt she enjoyed looking around.
"
Hope you didn't cause any trouble." Said Silanus, in a mockery tone, before answering Ernest's last question. It was quite odd that she asked if they had won, perhaps she wasn't able to listen the parade and celebration? "
Fortunately, we did triumph against them. Their chieftain was defeated, even though he fought bravely till' the end. Even I have to admit it." For a brief moment, Silanus turned his face to look around while he was walking; they had arrived at the fountain, which was still pouring crystalline water.
"
I didn't ask you, but do you like the marble fountains? These were carefully made through a complex system of underground sewerage; This land is rich in mountains and rivers, so we take the water from there. Clean as the sky, and they give the city a beautiful detail too." Silanus leaned to see the water of the big marble fountain, which was the biggest of the whole city. It was quite astounding, the only cities who had fountains as these, were thanks to some magic spells. At these times, sadly, magic outmatched their technology.
A curious smile appeared on Silanus' face when he remembered the urban tales and poems that people say and sing about these fountains. "
You know, these fountains are also important culturally. Since I was a child, at the times of my dear father, may he rest in peace, there has been talk about them." After a brief moment of silence, the general washed his hands on the water, then continued speaking: "
There is a belief that each drop of this fountain is sacred, as they come directly from the mountain's heart, which produces the. The water, hailing from the hills' heart, affects your own heart… Sounds quite awkward right now, but these curious myths say that they forge bounds…" Raising his eyebrows, Silanus realised that his words were quite flamboyant.
"
I well, excuse me if I sound too pretentious, these are just some beliefs about the fountains, which are so loved by our citizens. Although I assume few people still believe in that, but it's still a story I heard as a child… Curious, if you ask me." Finally concluded the general, with a short sight after he finished speaking. He was starting to sound awkward.

Ernest stood frozen for a minute, then Silanus's face broke into a smile and she realized he was kidding. "You shouldn't joke about that! I've got arrested once for skulking about on rooftops. Apparently I was disturbing the peace." She smiled, though. It was nice to not have to worry about guards chasing her.
She was actually quite surprised to hear that any of the orcs had been able to hurt Silanus. He was a fighter by trade, that she knew, and she'd assumed he would have guards. Still, she agreed with his sentiment. "You always appreciate the good times more when they're gone."
She looked at him in shock. "Of course I expected you to come back! Why wouldn't you? Fighting is a strength of yours, from what I've seen." She grinned.
"I wanted to look around more," she said. "There's no sense going somewhere if you aren't going to look at where you've gotten." She paused. "Anyway, how was the battle. I mean, you survived, but did you win? How did it go?"

As Silanus walked without purpose, when suddenly an unexpected person fell from the roof of a house, it was Ernest! Surprisingly, she was still there, who would have thought that? With a serious face, Silanus stared at her and said: "
I must remind you that wandering in the roof of a house is forbidden. You are under arrest." Then, after some seconds of raw silence, a cheerful smile appeared in the governor's face as he opened both of his hands and pointed them at Ernest, he was truly elated to see her once again.
"
Of course I am toying with you! I did not expect to see you here, in fact I was sure you'd have left!" It was probably the first time Ernest saw Silanus without his usual heavy armor, but with normal clothes instead. Dressed with a white-purple tunic with a thick fur cape; this was the noble outfit among the Fratians.
Looking at Ernest with arrant comfort, Silanus, with a dearth of unease, mentioned "
I must admit I am quite delighted to, well, speak with you once again, Ernest. Back there, I was almost murdered by some savage orc… A slinger hit me in the head… If it wouldn't be for my helmet, I'd be dead right now." He gave a brief sight, before continuing to speak: "
When you are in the damp mud, stunned by such a hit, you truly miss the peaceful moments, you know?" The general turned and walked towards the usual fountain of the upper district, one they have seen the last time most likely.
While they were walking, Silanus asked Ernest: "
Tell me, did you believe I would come back from there? Anyways, why did you stay… How much, a week or two? I thought you were no city folk." When saying the last thing, Silanus turned his head with a mocking smirk in his face, awaiting for Ernest's answers.

Ernest watched the woman go, unsure entirely why she was so uneasy. Maybe it was simply her way of questioning. She didn't know, and didn't intend to find out. She had more than enough trouble in her life without seeking out sources of it.
The hours slid by, and Ernest felt herself slipping back into her old habits, half hidden on one of the roofs, watching the people wander by. She nibbled on a strip of jerky from her bag. She wondered, at one point, why she stayed. She wasn't quite sure. Perhaps it was the city, in all of its beauty. Maybe it was just the fact that she didn't want to go wandering again quite yet.
The sun was starting to lower when she noticed a figure, walking all alone. She slid to the edge of the roof. It was Silanus! And, by the look on his face, he had no idea she was here.
She couldn't help her grin. As silently as she could, she dropped from the edge of the roof to stand a few feet behind him. "Looking for someone?" she asked.

Unsatisfied, but not unhappy with that answer, Illia's hostile look became a simple, serious glare. "
You better be… You are… Behaving normally, keep acting like this and you will soon be slowly accepted. Perhaps the rumors will…" A deep sight took place before she could finish talking: "
Perhaps the rumors will simply vanish… Carry on." Said Silanus' cousin, before she, along her bodyguards, walked away, leaving Ernest alone.
Meanwhile, on the campaign to eradicate the hostile orchish clan, the Fratians, after a small and unsuccessful skirmish, decides to engage on a full combat once again. This time, they attacked at dusk, when the Sun would not lighten the way and the fog might cover the soldiers. This way, the archers of the orchish stronghold will have trouble shooting at them. This combat would most likely be the last one.
The orchish patrollers informed the stronghold army about the approaching batallion, and thus, they prepared for battle. Both sides in a full, all out combat for the second, and hopefully, last combat they'd have. However, this time, the battle seemed to favor the Fratians, as their foes were dying as fleas, slaughtered by the heavy armored infantry. The reason why this time the orchish clan was losing is because of a strategy Silanus himself thought of. While the main Fratian soldiers attacked, the ally orc berserkers would attack their flanks. This simple tactic made the battle much easier for them, a devastating, humiliating defeat for the orchish clan, truly!
After the last archer was down, the orchish chieftain refused to surrender or drop his mace, and was eventually killed by the Fratians. With the leader dead, the Stronghold was left intact, this way the enemy would learn that the Fratians are as generous as they are mighty. It was finally time to return!
The gates of Amiternum opened, and the first men to enter were the trumpeteers, then Silanus and his top soldiers, after that the rest of the troopers and at last the injured one, carried by their fellows. Naturally, a huge, cheerful crowd surrounded them… It was a glorious day!
After the long victory parade, Silanus walked alone through the upper district; the people were with their families celebrating this victory, so it was usual to see the streets so empty. Of course, the general was not expecting Ernest, as he was sure she had left the city during the campaign.
This moment right here was truly relaxing and soothing for the governor. Alone, without that heavy armor, only clothes.

People were watching her. Ernest could feel their eyes on her back when she looked away. She supposed it was only natural - she was very out of place here - but she didn't like it, nonetheless. She was used to hiding in the crowd, not drawing attention.
Calm down, she told herself.
Nothing is going to happen. She resisted the urge to hide, to find somewhere - anywhere - where she could be alone. But she knew that would only draw more attention at this point. Right now, she had to pretend she was comfortable here. She saw the woman walking toward her, and again fought her instinctual response to run. She had nothing to fear.
The woman introduced herself, and Ernest remembered Silanus mentioning his cousin at one point. Illia wished to know why she was here, and who she was. It was a logical enough request. Illia was right that Ernest did not fit in.
She met Illia's eyes, and smiled faintly, trying to look comfortable. "I think the rumour mill has gotten ahead of itself," she said. "I have not been playing with anyone's mind. And anyway, I've never even been to Parvpora." She considered telling Illia that she wasn't a mage, either, but she decided against it. She had used magic, and she was pretty sure that Illia would hear about that at some point.
"I'm no one particularly important. I helped Silanus once, and he invited me here. I mean no harm. I'm just visiting."

Amongst all the eager laughs and cheerful acclaims, Silanus could hear a familiar voice; the general was not able to listen to the first sentence, but then he heard a "Thank you"… Of course, it was Ernest. It was quite surprising for him, as he thought she had left Amiternum before. The governor turned his head and saw her tiny head, almost covered by other heads and raised hands from other people. He knew that, if he answered, Ernest would probably not hear him, so Silanus simply raised his arm, with a conceited smile on his face. This was the last moment thing he did before he left the city with his army.
The army, after 4 hours marching (excluding their rests) had arrived what would soon be a battlefield. Surprisingly, the orchish clan was expecting them. No words were needed, no provocative actions not menaces. Both armies simply charges against each other. The fierceful soldiers of both sides fought ruthlessly, nonetheless the fight would have only no winners for now. Even if the clan was larger in numbers, both sides had lost a fair amount of soldiers. The Fratians, as well as the clan, stopped fighting and left, so they could resume the battle in another time. This was no retreat, simply a rearrangement both sides made. The campaign against the clan would not end with a simple battle.
Meanwhile, back on Amiternum, most citizens were looking at Ernest as if she was an outstanding person. Rumors came early, some of them said she was a diplomat, hailing from Parvpora, Some others said she was a lover of the governor, while the rest stated that Ernest was a new mage scholar who was hired to study the ancient scroll, as well to introduce the Fratians to magic, who they were very unfamiliar with. Of course, none of these were true, as the only ones who knew the truth were the soldiers who had accompanied Silanus before… Soldiers who were obviously in the battlefield right now.
Accompanied with five bodyguards, a very young woman, wearing the finest of dresses and jewelry, walked towards Ernest. Without any doubt, the arrogant, impertinent woman presented herself: "
I am Illia, cousin of a man you have perhaps met, that's right, Tacitus Silanus." It was obvious Silanus' cousin would act in such way, she was the opposite definition of humble. "
Let's spare the social introduction and get straight to the point, shall we, dear? Who exactly are you, wearing that plebeian, ragged cloth and those worn out shoes, yet talking to the governor of this fine city?" With her typical frowning, unwelcoming face, Illia asked one more thing, menacingly pointing her finger at Ernest: "
There is talk of you, my very manly lady… They say you are a mage from Parvpora, who has been playing with the feeble mind of Silanus. Is that the case, dear?"

Ernest awoke to the sound of trumpets. She jumped out of bed, grabbed her things, and had her dagger in her hand before she even knew what was happening. She shook her head, trying to clear her mind, and remembered, suddenly, where she was. The realization of what was happening struck her a moment later. She had nothing to worry about. It was merely the soldiers heading off - wait! The soldiers were leaving! She suddenly realized that she had never wished Silanus good luck.
She ran out the entryway to the inn to watch the army march past, slipping through the crowd to see all of the soldiers. Yes, there was Silanus, leading the army. Amidst the other voices, she called out, "Good luck, today." She paused, then added, more quietly "And, thank you. For everything." There was little chance he could hear her, among all of the shouting, but she had wanted to say something. She waved as the soldiers passed.
The army continued marching past for several minutes. Ernest wondered why there seemed to be so many of the soldiers. Was the orc clan really that big, or did Silanus just want to ensure a victory? She suddenly caught herself worrying about him, then almost laughed. He was the commander of an army. He would be fine.
She realized she shouldn't be waiting around, and set off to look around the town, but some part of her kept her near the city gates, waiting for the army to return.

Silanus remained silent for a small moment, to see how Ernest simply left like that, without a thanks or a humble good night; it was quite frustrating, if he really thought about it. To know how he went to fight another battle, knowing that he could die in there at the hands of a rampaging orc. The general simply nodded and stared at the table for a while.
It was unnecessary to say that Silanus was quite tipsy, of course he was, since he ordered the strongest wine they had. It was normal to give a slightly less alcoholic drink to outsiders, as they don't know what would the drink cause on them. Suddenly, the servant came and retrieved the dirty dishes, naturally the governor simply left and went upstairs to his bedroom. The general simply removed his usual armor and left it in a stand, then grabbed a clean sleeping robe. Quite odd to see his cousin was not in the palace, now that he thought about it… She was most likely travelling as usual.
Silanus fell asleep immediately, he was simply exhausted from all what had happened. To mention how he went to the Silvas Region, lost most of his people and then was almost killed by natives and the wolves he fears so much, in just 2 days! When the dawn came and a fellow, trusted soldier came to wake him up, the general had no option but to wake up.
Trumpeteers and town criers had awakened most of the city as it was the tradition, so the citizens could see their trusted soldiers and governor leave. Mounted in a large armored horse, there was Silanus, with a decorated and customised lorica and a helmet with a large, red crest. His bronze coloured steel armor was such a sight to see! Orcs and humans, all wearing the same armored uniforms and marching together across the streets, under the same banner. This proved that orcs and humans may live together, unlike most people's opinions.

The Fratians seemed to have a rather no-nonsense approach to dealing with people, Ernest decided. While she bore some resentment toward the orcs that had attacked her, she hadn't thought that anything would come of it. Apparently fighting was considerably more effective in their world than in hers. Then again, she wasn't much of a fighter. She tried the wine. It was good - not that she knew much about wine.
"I might stick around for a little while, at least," she said. "If I'm not bothering anyone." Honestly, she liked the city. It was so unique, and so pretty. She paused in her speech to try some of the fish.
After a pause in the conversation, during which Ernest tried not to stuff her face (the food really was great), Silanus stood up. Ernest took that as a cue that it was time to leave and stood up also.
She listened as he talked, but it became apparent that he was babbling after about four or five sentences. She sighed. "I'll find somewhere to sleep."
She wandered outside, looking around again. The weather didn't look too bad, and she preferred to be outside when she could. As she wandered, it became somewhat obvious that there weren't many places outside. She found the inn with little trouble, and at that point decided she would just stay inside. After haggling for a minute with the man at the front desk, who was rather stubborn, she found a room and drifted off to sleep.

Ernest was right, Silanus had chosen the best place is Canelux. "
You see, the only problem is the land. Farming in this cold, thick ground is almost impossible, with the exception of wheat. However, money, cattle and fishery in the large rivers that extend across these lands is a blessing to us." Said Silanus, with both his arms on the table. He was looking at Ernest, who still had his cloak; truth is, that she looked quite elegant with it. She might as well keep it.
When another servant, this time a woman, arrived with their food and a bottle of wine, she quickly left the plates on the table and left; Silanus held his wine bottle, which was made from a thick glass. "
We Fratians love wine over everything else, you know? Other liquors are fine, but nothing is compared to our wine…" Said the general, as he opened the bottle and served himself and, of course Ernest, on two different cups made from silver: "
Hope you enjoy it as much as we do." When the wine was served, Silanus lifted his cup and said in a cheerful voice tone: "
Prodesse! It means to excel, to do good!" once he had said that, he took his first sip.
After a short while of eating, Silanus' cheerful face turned in an almost threatening, ominous one. "
Tomorrow I will lead a small batallion to raid the tribe of orcs that balefully attacked you… They not only infiltrated to our territory, but assaulted our frontier outpost. We had a deal, that if we did not attack their territory, we would not step a foot in theirs… Damn traitors…" When he finished saying that, the general took another sip of wine and ate his last bit of fish, then he continued speaking: "
Our soldiers grow tired of being idle, and our neighbours are starting to doubt the Fratian might… This will serve as an example!"Again, after a short moment of silence, Silanus' looked at Ernest once more, this time with a calmer expression and, pointing at her with his hand, he said: "
You may do as you like, Ernest. Leave tomorrow morning, stay and get to know the city once more before you leave, or if you want you could accompany us to attack them… Something I really doubt you'd like though." The general took a long breath and stood up. Needless to say, the wine had taken quite an effect on him. He was less cautious, less cunning than usual, but more friendly and less arrogant too. "
I hope you enjoyed the food." The general said, as he placed his hands on the back of his chair.
"
I'll be honest, I am tired and tomorrow is an important day, so I should rest while I can. You uh, well I don't know about you. There are empty rooms in the taverna, or Inn… Also, a free house on the Lower District. Take one or live as the survivor you are, in the wilds!" When saying those last words, Silanus had quite a laugh. "
Which one suits you better, Ern-Est?" A smirk appeared on his face, she had a funny name. "
Ern-Est the mod-est, haha! Ernest the modest girl who lives in the West! You are not too modest and I'm sure you don't live in the West, haha! Well, Erdenrst, in the mornest, the morning, the mornest of the east where awaken the modest!"

It was an interesting feeling, Ernest decided, to be noticed. Ever since she had arrived here, the people had been paying attention to her. She supposed that being a guest of the governor had to help somewhat. She shrugged at Silanus's inquiry. "I never object to food." The last time she had had fish had been… interesting, though. She had tried to cook it over the fire, and had ended up burning the fish, her fingers, and several of the surrounding plants. "I've had interesting experiences trying to cook fish, though."
"As for your… disagreements with Adeluna, you seem to have picked a good location for your city, then. Even if some of the neighbours can be aggravating at times," she said, remembering the orc that had stalked her on her way to Amiternum.
She realized she was pacing and sat down. "You seem to have most certainly made the best of the area you have."

Seeinf how Ernest stood up, just like him, Tacitus Silanus walked towards the palace once more, as it was getting cold outside. As he walked, he answered Ernest's questions: "
As the sole heir of the Fratian Empire, the other survivors selected me as the new governor. We had a fair but limited amount of treasures left too." When they finally arrived to the entrance, the general sat down on the fancy seats the main room had, hoping Ernest would sit as well.
"
For your second question…" He resumed: "
The queen of Adeluna, has a very limited, if not no power in the Northlands." Silanus grabbed one loaf of bread that was on the small marble table that lied infront of his seat. Before biting it, he continued to speak:
"In that time they barely knew about us, now, as much as they'd like to raze Amiternum, that would mean crossing the large forests of the region, a hostile region full of furious orcs and nomad tribes who would attack them on sight." The general smiled proudly. He believed himself to be truly a tactician by building his empire in this area. He then started to eat his bread.
A servant walked towards the two of them. A sycophant, just as Harris, the servant asked: "
A very fine night, is it not my preminence?" Silanus turned his gaze to see him. He simply nodded, with a neutral face; then the servant said: "
I see you have brought company! May I interest both of you with some exquisite food?" Of course Silanus could not refuse, he had not eaten a proper king's worthy meal since he arrived! "
Bring me two olive bathed sweetwater fish fllets, accompanied with some uh… Bread? And wine too." Hearing his orders, the servant nodded and went quickly to the food storage. "
I hope you like fish and wine, I fear that, this night, only that is left?" Said Silanus, with a proud smirk on his face… He was sure his empire was superior than any other in every aspect, including food.

Sometimes the stories Silanus told amazed Ernest - the things he had done and seen, and spoke so casually of. She had never imagined most of the things he talked about. "You started an empire at eleven?" she asked. "I didn't know that was even possible." She hadn't thought there would even have been room for more empires at this point.
"Nobody really… minded?" she asked. "I mean, wouldn't Adeluna or somebody have objected to having a new power building?" From the little she knew of politics (basically, getting attacked was bad), it didn't seem like anyone would have liked to have a new empire trying to get rid of them. And, as Ernest had learned, the Fratians were trying to get rid of them, if not actively yet. "I, mean, I don't know much about politics, but it seems like a bad idea."
She got up, feeling a bit bad about sitting while he stood. Even in the dark, she could see quite a lot of the city. "You appear to be doing quite well, though."
Author: Silanus, Posted: Sun Feb 5, 2017 11:54 PM, Post Subject: Into the Mountains [P]
Silanus was glad to know that Ernest seemed to atleast trust him, although even he admitted his questions were quite intrusive. For a person as reticent as Ernest, it was somewhat easy to guess not everyone gained her trust. "
Why would she trust someone like me? Considering the ruthless things I had done, and how I tried to sell her off. I wouldn't trust me in her place." Thought the general.
Many people had asked Silanus what Ernest was asking now, it was actually a fair question. "
Allow me to explain… Our very first fort was at the Vipamolan Coast, however we were kicked out of it by some crazy pirate crimelord. So we, or better said, my 11 year old me, came to Canelux to rebuild our land among my followers." Said Silanus; while remaining in the bench, sitting.
"
We wanted to build a land in the rich terrain of Adeluna, but of course it had already been claimed, so we came North. Once here, we tried to settle in the Highlands, but the lands were too hostile. While retreating from that savage place, we found ourselves in here, in the curious land of the Steppes." Now, Silanus stood up as he spoke and made a brief pause, then continued to talk: " '
Ere, we met an orchish tribe who was fond of outsiders. Their king, a proudzl, but old orc warrior, made us an offer; if we helped them attack a nearly tribe, they would join forces with us. So we did, and thus, needless to say, Amiternum, the heart of a new empire, was born."

It seemed Silanus had a habit of asking slightly intrusive questions. Ernest understood his curiosity, as she was a very curious person herself, and at least he was willing to answer her questions. She supposed she could trust him. The few secrets she had, she knew how to hide.
"No one I'd consider family," she said aloud. "My father might still be alive. I don't know. I never considered him family anyway. It's hard to love someone you've never met." She shrugged. The idea of her father had never bothered her. She'd had her mother, and her uncle. That had been enough. "I have a few friends. That's pretty much all."
She noticed his yawn, even though he tried to hide it, but she wasn't offended. She was used to staying up somewhat late, but she knew others weren't. "It gets dark very suddenly here," she said. Actually, it occurred to her, there were several odd things about this place. "If you don't mind me asking, why did you choose to settle here? It seems… very different from most of the places I've seen."

Ernest's story was quite particular; Silanus was not sure about the rest of the continent, but in Amiternum the only thing that mattered was your cunningness and intelligence, probably strength too depending on the job. She then asked him where did his name come from, she had not been in a Fratian domain long enough it seemed.
"
My name Tacitus Silanus is common here. Ask any non-outsider and you'll notice we all have similar names." Said Silanus, before looking around. He scratched his head then looked back and Ernest and continued talking to her: "
Marcus, Junius, Magnus, Silus, Marius, Titus… All male names… On the other hand, Julia, Junia, Illia, Martia… Female names." The general smirked while speaking.
"
Just as Highlanders got named like uh… Thorald and the like, while orcs got Bra'nnok… These are regional names, you see." While speaking, Silanus yawned, instantly covering his mouth his his hand. "
I guess that you have no family left? My only family is my cousin Illia, although she's not very friendly with outsiders, Illia can be sympathetic. You possess no family, or anyone close anymore?" Even if his last question was a little direct, Silanus wanted to know nonetheless.

It seemed as though everything in this city was designed to confuse her. Pineapples? What the heck were pineapples? Ernest supposed they were some kind of fruit that rich people grew - perhaps she had even had one without realizing what it was. Apparently, these weren't actually them - not that she would be able tell the difference.
She had been asked by a few people why she had a boy's name. She hadn't known it was anything out of the ordinary for many years, but people seemed to be curious sometimes. "My mom told me it was suggested by my uncle. He said that girls are laughed at if they try to do incredible things, but boys never are. So he suggested I have a boy's name. He was the one who started me cutting my hair like this, too." She reached up to touch the edge of her hair. She always kept it this short nowadays. "He actually did a lot for me."
"What about you?" she asked. "I've never met anyone named Silanus before. Where did your name come from?"

The fact that Ernest appreciated the city so much made Silanus really glad; only foreigners get amazed to much by Amiternum, since the Fratians are so used to it, they might even think that's what all the cities look like. "
Your eagerness is appreciated, follow me." He said, as he exited from the building, of course not before he spoke to Harris. "
Take care of this place… And of yourself too of course." Silanus was not certain what else he may show to his visitor, as she had seen most of points of interest. What was left were just stores, houses, inns and possibly some taverns. The general turned around and once more began to speak: "
There are not many places I may be able to show you anymore. We got a small theater in the palace, but it's nothing important. We also plan to build an amphitheatre, but it's just a concept for now, I fear." Silanus walked towards the middle of the upper district, where there was a large, tall tree with fancy benches around it. When they arrived, he finally sat down in one of them, wearing that heavy armor all day was tiresome. "
This tree, you see, is a huge tree of pineapples. That's right, pineapples growing on a tree, not your average thing huh? Those crimson, spiky fruits are not pineapples actually, but we named it like that because it tastes the same." Before continuing speaking, Silanus looked upwards to see if there were some of the fruits. Sadly not, as they only grew up in Winter. The tree was a sight though.
"
Why are you named you Ernest? It's not a very feminine namez not that it matters anyway. You know, in a forgotten language of an ancient, long lost tribe, as far as I know Er-nest means serious…" Silanus had, for a moment, an energetic laugh before he added: "
Fits you very well!"

Ernest laughed. "I didn't mean you in particular. I meant the Fratian people in general." She honestly couldn't see Silanus digging for relics or anything. It seemed like the kind of work he would delegate.
She spun around when Harris spoke, unaware that the man had followed them in. She grinned at his description of the mage who had tried to decipher the enchantment. She also was not sure about his use of the word 'hired.' From what she had seen of the Fratian modes operandi, they tended to not ask if people wanted to be 'hired' before bringing them along. "Yes, that would be a disappointment. I wonder what it is, the enchantment on that scroll."
She turned to look at the piece of anchor on display. A part of her wondered how they knew it was an anchor - it looked kind of like a large spearhead to her. "I don't really know much about the sea," she said. "The closest I've been was the time I got on a ship accidentally - long story - and ended up on some ice island."
She was a little sad that this was all the museum contained - she was fascinated by it. When he asked if she'd like to look around any more, she said, "Oh, yes. This place is so amazing!"

Now, Ernest seemed as a child in a candy store, looking everything everywhere. It was good to see many people still appreciated antiquities, as most of them are so focused in the present, they lose interest in the past. She made some funny questions, though.
Silanus smiled at the weird question, he even thought it was a joke before he answered: "
Well… I certainly was not the one who found these relics, but our workers instead, you see…" Perhaps he was being a little judgemental on her, the question was not that dumb, now that he thought of it.
The general nodded when he heard Ernest talk about the scroll. It had some magic and it indeed was enchanted; how wonderful would it be to decipher the runes and use the magic, sadly, skilled mages do not trust the Fratians… What a waste. "
Well, the scroll keeps being a mystery for us." He stated, before Harris added: "
Indeed it is, sadly. We once hired a mage who tried to reveal the enchantment of the scroll, but the nuthead had no knowledge of it. Such a disappointment, really!" Silanus, opening pointing towards a piece of rusted, pointy metal, who had some corals attached to it, said: "
If you like the Sea you will like this. It's a piece of anchor we found ashore; we don't know who made it though. It's probably our oldest asset, besides the scroll I believe. I am no historian, as much as I'd like to." He finally said, with a small snigger on his final statement. Opening his arms, the general finally concluded: "
I guess, this is it! If you want to visit another place before it's too late, you tell me. Or, you may stay here if you'd like. I can explain what little I know of the rest of the relics. I have nowhere to go, so I don't have to hurry."

Ernest followed Silanus toward the museum, looking around as she walked at the city. It looked different, now that everyone had gone inside. Nighttime was a good time for her to sneak around without getting noticed. She did a lot of travelling within cities at night. It was odd not having to sneak, being able to be noticed.
She almost laughed at the old man guarding the museum. Such obvious flattery, but it worked. That was something she would have to try sometime. She did see, though, that he watched carefully as they entered, as if he suspected her of something. She shrugged. That she was used to.
The museum was fascinating. So many different items, things she had never expected to see. She nearly got lost for a second, when Silanus turned a corner, and she didn't see him, but she found him with little trouble, standing in front of a case displaying a scroll that looked so old, Ernest was surprised it hadn't fallen apart yet. She studied it for a minute. There seemed to be something important about it.
Silanus asked if she liked the museum, and she jerked her attention back to the present. "Yes," she said. "It's amazing. There are so many things here. Did you just find them all while digging up stone?" When he explained about the scroll, she understood why it was so interesting. There was a bit of magic about it, not enough that it was really usable, but there anyway. "It does seem magical," she said. "More like it's enchanted, though, than actually containing magic."

Silanus was relieved to see Ernest was now calm, and seemed eager to see the museum. "
Good, follow me, it should still be open. It's not that late." He said while he began to walk.
While the general was guiding Ernest towards the place, he began to look around. The city was quiet now, with few exceptions. Most people were going indoors, the patrons even told the slaves to get some rest. Most of the noise was gone. "
I am sure you will like it. Although not much exploring was necessary to get those relics; sometimes while digging up stone the workers found antique artifacts, and thus the museum was born."When they finally arrived, Silanus pointed towards the museum with his hand. It had some lightly armoured guards and a well dressed man, who quickly walked towards Silanus and Ernest. He was an old foreigner hailing from the Silvas region, a very well trusted person who was in charge of the museum. Known to be a sycophant who always flattered his superiors in order to get some benefits… And it worked.
The man instantly bowed to Silanus and saluted him, then spoke to them: "
Ah Tacitus Silanus, I see you came to visit the museum; we were closing but for you, we can keep it open until the dawn of eternity my lord." Approaching Ernest, he continued to talk; "
Ah, see you brought a lady friend; an ambassador from a city I blindly believe? My name is Harris, boss of this fine property!" Harris quickly guided them to the museum. It was not impressively big, just as the size of two average houses.
The place had ancient rusted armory, pieces of buildings, statuettes, antique every day wooden utilities, all orchish. The most important artifact was a perfectly conserved ancient scroll. "
How do you like the place, Ernest?" Asked Silanus. "
You see this scroll? It was discovered in a burial site found in a cavern; it's runes are believed to have some magical power, but we are not sure."

It seemed to darken very suddenly, and it was distinctly colder. Ernest was surprised at the quick change, and although she was still angry to some degree, she was grateful when Silanus lent her his cloak. She was somewhat used to the cold, because she didn't spend much time indoors, but she had never been nearly this far north.
She was more than glad when Silanus mentioned the museum. She had been hoping for another topic of conversation, and, anyway, she was interested in museums. She hadn't spent much time in them - they seemed to discourage people like her sneaking in to look around - but she had always been fascinated by the amount of things people had been able to discover.
Aloud, she said, "No, I haven't seen the museum. It sounds very interesting." She paused. "I may not seem to, but I actually really like that kind of thing. You know, exploration and discovery and whatnot. I hope to be an explorer one day."

When Ernest said how little she enjoyed being a thief, Tacitus Silanus bit his lips, trying not to laugh. It was so hard for him to take her seriously right now! However, when she turned around, even angrier than before, he realised that she did not, and would not take his "interruption" as lightly as he did. That's when he stopped chuckling and grinning.
How awkward it was for him, now with Ernest mad at him, not only that but he felt quite embarrassed, as some people, citizens and guards, most likely saw their governor, acting as a kid. These two things combined made him stand firmer and with his usual serious expression. Before continuing talking, Silanus took a look around. The sun had hidden and the night started.
The Steppes, as it's in the pure North, was a very cold place, even when it was not Winter. A strong, cold breeze invades Amiternum, accompanied by the darkness, who was only balanced by the light of the moon. The moon was most covered by the dark clouds, but a small portion of it was still visible, shining; as it was darks, six different labourers began to light the lamps with torches, just as they did every night. These were "primitive lamps".
Silanus removed his long, thick red cloak and covered Ernest's back with it. He didn't know if she was as used to this climate as him, so he might as well prevent her from getting cold. Living with a low temperature really makes a person to get used to it; itwas visible most of these people did not feel very uncomfortable with the cold, as they wore few clothing just as long sleeves, thin clothing and the typical skirt every soldier had in the armor, including Silanus.
After a heavy sight, Silanus, a little uncomfortable by what he did, said, still conserving the pride in his voice tone: "
You ask me what that was for? Well for the same reason you followed the man who tried to sell you to maniacs, curiosity." It was a rather honest, good excuse. He had have curiosity in what would Ernest's reaction be, when he kissed her before. "
We are curious people, that's why we have a small museum where we analyze ancient artifacts… One museum I believe you have not seen yet, by the way."

Ernest gave Silanus an even angrier glare. "For one thing," she said, "I hardly enjoy being a thief. It's a matter of necessity. And for another, you never answered my question." Not that she really thought he was going to. He seemed perfectly willing to ignore questions if it suited him.
If it was possible, she glared even harder when he laughed about acting like a child. "I haven't acted like a child in four years," she said shortly. "It's what keeps me alive." She tried not to snap, but it was clear that Silanus was not taking her seriously, and that annoyed her even more.
She had no response to his last statement. She simply turned away, trying to think of something - anything - to say to get the topic back to something as simple as the city. But her mind was blank. She was angry, and that made her very focused, and, honestly, she was a little confused. That combination of emotions took up most of her thoughts.

It was such a relief to be able to change topics, no more mythology, magic trees or gods! On the other hand, Silanus now had to explain himself to Ernest, who didn't take his action very lightly. She was staring at him with a murder face, how… Awkward…!
The general slowly shrugged and, with his usual arrogant smirk, answered: "
You usually talk about how you are a skilled thief, yet you got mad when I stole a kiss from you! Did I have bad breath?" Of course, Tacitus was quite delighted at the moment, being able to finally stopping acting as a general and governor, but acting as a burden free person. As someone who can do something childish and silly, without triggering an insurgency in the city.
Now, a shameless, unconcealed grin appeared on the general's face, while he turned his view away for a while. "
Being so formal and serious all the minutes of the day can be really weary and exhausting, you know?" He said, while turning his gaze at Ernest once again: "
Acting as a child sometimes is truly refreshing, you should try it sometime and see for yourself!" These words were unusual for him, as he has always thought badly of careless people, clumsy people.
"
Now, don't look at me with that murderous, bloodthirsty face! If you really want you shall take back the kiss I stole from you!" Said the general, as he unsuccessful tried to hold back a light chuckle. He was eager to see her next, even more fiendish, fierce cutthroat reaction!

Ernest was so shocked, she didn't even hear what Silanus said next. Thoughts flashed through her head. Her first thought was that she wanted to kill him. What was he doing? He had no right!
Calm, Ernest, she told herself, trying to keep from shouting. She was a guest. She should not yell at her host. She would not shout.
Calm. Her next thought was that she would have quite a story to tell. The first time she had been kissed was by a general who - she hoped - had other motives behind it. And suddenly she was angry again. She had had no say! What gave him the thought that he could do this?
She waited for a second, calming down. "What was that for?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm. Inwardly, she had several insults she would love to throw at him, but she tried to keep calm. Maybe there was a good reason. Then again, maybe not. Dealing with Silanus was always a bit risky.

Silanus raised one tear when he saw how Ernest sighted, probably tired of explaining these things to someone who didn't understand a thing, like him; or atleast that's what he thought. Again, the general could not comprehend anything that came out of her mouth… What in the hell was a World tree?
What a tedious conversation, everything Ernest said was simply incomprehensible to Silanus! If she was so close to her friend why was she always alone? Why did the so-called Goddess kill someone and then resurrected that person? And, as uncivilised as it may seem, Silanus wanted to end this conversation as fast as possible, without being rude; after all, how could a governor be rude to his visitor?
Silanus looked around as Ernest spoke about all the divine talk, fearing it may be blatant how little he understood. Well, the error here was not the explanation, but his lack of knowledge in "Adeluna Mythology". So, instead of interrupting, changing topics or asking more questions, Silanus did what he saw in a comedy theatrical drama his favorite poet did… The general kissed her, that's right, the "almighty governor of Amiternum and the Fratian Empire" kissed Ernest in the lips, so he could finish the conversation in a classy, chic way, without being rude or uncivilised.
This idea had worked in the teather performance, so he hoped that this unexpected event may work too. After that, Silanus smiled, a little shamed of his action. "
I am glad your friend is alive, where is he or she?" He asked, as if nothing had happened.

This place was something Ernest had never seen the likes of. In all of the cities she had been to - not that that was many - there had never seemed a convenient place to post things like this. If there had been, she would have found it - something like that could be very useful to her.
She was glad to see, at least, that Silanus shared her paranoia about talking about deities. She had never been able to quite shake the feeling that she was being watched whenever she talked about them. Perhaps it was her underlying fear of being watched. Ernest had always liked being able to blend into the crowd and hide.
She thought back to his last question and sighed inwardly. It had not occurred to her that her explanation was somewhat flawed. "On the topic of my friend, she came back to life. That's how I know she forgives Dalanesca. I don't really know how it happened." She paused, considering. "The World Tree probably had something to do with it. I can't imagine anyone else having that sort of power." She shrugged. "I'm sorry, my explanation wasn't very good. I'm not used to knowing more than people, you see."

It was confusing to see Ernet acting in such an odd way, covering her mouth and often looking around, as if she was scared about something. How innocent she was, thinking that someone would attack them in HIS city. Even if it was fun to watch her superstitious attitude, it was a little confusing for Silanus.
Silanus frowned, looking somewhat confused, since he could not understand a thing Ernest said. Who the heck was Angela and how can someone change domains? He asked his first question, with a lot of doubt on what he was saying: "
Oh… Absolutely, of course… Anyways, I am sorry for your loss, however… How is a dead person able to, you know… Forgive? And how can you know? Excuse my lack of… Knowledge…" This time, the general did not mantain eye contact, instead he was simply looking around.
The general led his friend Ernest to another place of interest while they spoke. This time he showed her one of the last extravagant buildings; It was in the Merchant District, the one they first visited, where the most people were. Of course, every citizen approached Silanus, until some local guards told them to back off. The building was a public place: A forum.
"
Ehm… Just before we continue talking about divinities and all those… Extraterrestrial topics, let me show you the Forum, the center of Amiternum. Here, important messages such as bounties, news or job offers are displayed. Everyone can add a notice here." It was pretty obvious that Silanus was a little more serious than before; this was because of the uncommon things they were talking… Talking about the divines did not please his ancestors, that's why he guides Ernest from the temple. "
Try to talk about that unnatural woman Dalanesca a little quieter, would you?"
Author: Silver Star, Posted: Tue Jan 24, 2017 11:03 AM, Post Subject: Into the Mountains [P]
Ernest decided not to comment on his ideas about Adeluna. Honestly, she wasn't sure what she thought of it herself. Adeluna was a nice city, but he was right that it could be improved. She knew that from experience.
She raised an eyebrow at his description of Dalanesca. "Actually," she said, "she's changed domains somehow. Apparently she's the goddess of death now. Angela was rather put out." She covered her mouth with her hands. She hadn't meant to say that much. "Also, I'm not sure she's not a goddess. If she isn't, she's very powerful."
She glanced around, a slight part of her needing to make sure Dalanesca wasn't listening. She'd had too much experience with gods and goddesses. "I'm not meaning to say you're wrong," she continued. "It's just… some of my experiences would beg to differ. Although, some of those nasty opinions I kind of agree with. Even A- the person she ended up killing forgave her. But somehow I can't seem to."
Author: Silanus, Posted: Mon Jan 23, 2017 10:44 PM, Post Subject: Into the Mountains [P]
Ernest's first question did not really matter to Silanus, she was innocent and had no idea about the plans for the new world that the Fratians dream of, a world built on their design and values. The general answered: "
So we can get rid of the corruption and greed the city posseses, then we can rebuild the city from it's ashes. A new, perfect Adeluna." What a beautiful sight would be to see such city.
At first, Ernest seemed doubtful about answering his question, but later she seemed to be thinking about a proper answer; the answer she gave was absolutely not what Silanus expected… Dalanesca? Silanus had met that unjust savage before, she had stopped one of his attacks to a caravan of traders, claiming it "disturbed a balance" Silanus, as well as other soldiers, felt a big amount of disgust towards her.
With a serious look on his face, Silanus answered to Ernest's unfortunate anecdote: "
Ah… Dalanesca, the barbaric degenerate who goes around Canelux, playing the Justiciar and claiming she's a goddess. Well, we got that in common you and I, she's an infant minded savage, and her followers are a plague."
Author: Silver Star, Posted: Sat Jan 21, 2017 8:56 AM, Post Subject: Into the Mountains [P]
Ernest was shocked. "You're planning to burn Adeluna? Whatever for?" She had no real friends there, but she had visited the city and had enjoyed it. It would be sad to see it burned.
She listened quietly as he continued speaking. She was surprised that the Fratians and the orcs got along so well. Humans and orcs, from her experience, rarely seemed to get along. She glanced around and realized that, yes, a few of the people in the crowd were actually orcs. She mentally slapped herself for not noticing.
The plaza he had guided her to was full of people, and Ernest watched carefully all around her. She realized she probably didn't need to, but it was a bad habit. In most places, it paid off to keep an eye on everyone and everything.
She considered his last question. Besides the people she stole from, she didn't have many enemies. Well, except… well, she hadn't wanted to get into gods and goddesses, but it appeared she was going to anyway. "Besides the people I've stolen from, well, the ones who notice, anyway, I suppose I only have one enemy. She's kind of an important one, though. A few months back, I got stuck in the middle of a fight between two goddesses, and I still kind of have a desire to hunt down Dalanesca. She killed my friend."

It was new to Silanus that other cultures did not show respect to their ancestors by building a temple or atleast a shrine in their name, absolutely barbaric. Ernest's question was a good one, one the general could answer easily.
"
Well, only if they ask, or if they take part in a really important event. There was another temple with more statues of previous rulers, before it got sacked by mercenaries and pirates of course…" Answered Silanus, staring at his father's statue. After a brief moment of silence, he spoke once more, with a dedicated smirk on his face: "
I guess that one day I could have a statue of myself, just to celebrate when we burn Adeluna." Another surprise for Silanus, to hear most other cultures were not fond of art! What savage would not enjoy those beautiful architecture designs? When Silanus listened her last question, he walked and guided her to a place before answering. It was outside the upper districts, in a street they called "The Meeting place" here, people who wanted to meet other people from any social class met.
"
Believe it or not, the orcs are the Fratians best friends. They serve the backbone of our military, and sometimes their tribes annex to us. You can see many orcs here, either tribal chieftains walking around or hard working ones. If you look closely, you will be able to even see hybrids." Tacitus said that, just in case Ernest saw a wandering armed orc serving as a guard and thought he was an invader. "
The ones you saw were just… Rebels and treacherous fools." It was notorious that Silanus enjoyed speaking, as he kept doing so: "
My current enemies are the pirates of the Vipamolan coast, some barbarians of the Highlands, and of course the mindless degenerates of the tyrannical kingdom of Adeluna, nobody else." Turning his look at Ernest, he asked: "
You, what would your enemies be, if you have any? Other than the people you… Steal from?"
Author: Silver Star, Posted: Fri Jan 20, 2017 2:09 PM, Post Subject: Into the Mountains [P]
Ernest laughed. "Yes, I can see that," she said with a smile. "I have never seen a temple that was not to a god or goddess. It didn't occur to me that those existed. The temple is very beautiful, though." She decided not to add anything about gods or goddesses. The last thing she needed to do was get into an argument with Silanus.
"Do all of the leaders of the Fratians get statues or temples when they die?" she asked, mentally picturing Silanus criticizing the statue his people were making of him. "Your people seem to have a fondness for art, unlike most I've met." The only use for art most cities seemed to have was making themselves look rich and important.
"You said you often go out to speak to the soldiers," she said, changing topics. "Do you have many enemies? I mean, I know some of the orcs aren't very nice, but other than that?"

It was good to know Ernest still wanted to explore the city; it would have been a waste to simply stay inside. Silanus stood up and guided her outside the palace, on the upper class or "patrician"district. While walking, he began to answer Ernest's questions.
"
I do not usually stay in Amiternum for more than a month, as I have to constantly visit my brethren scattered in small towers or forts all across Canelux. Speeches and the sort, to boost the garrisoned soldiers' morale. Would you fight for someone you don't even know?" As he answered to Ernest, they stopped on a rather large building.
The building had two big statues. One of an armoured woman raising a sword and the other one of a mounted soldier, with a long halberd on his hand pointing towards. "
While I am in the city I usually relax in a hot bath, or simply hone my battle skills." Changing topics, Silanus pointed his hand to the building and continued speaking: "
This was the first building of Amiternum, the Ancestry Temple. We are not religious people, as we often pursue logic and wisdom, however we tribute our ancestors who guide our paths. That woman is the first Fratian mother, who lived back before the Adeluna people conquered the Vipolan coast and of course a lot before it became the abandoned pirate slum it is today." "The man, of course, is my father! You can see how inspiring and attractive he is, just as his successor!" A little joke between all this serious talking was of no harm! This was Silanus' favorite place, it was pretty obvious judging by his smile.

Ernest raised her eyebrows at his last statement. "That sounds like something you would do," she said, recalling her first encounter with the general. "I'll probably go look around the city a bit. It's very beautiful. The weather doesn't really bother me. I don't stay inside much, so I have to be used to it." She paused, and then grinned. "One of the last times I was inside I woke up with a chicken on my face."
Changing topics, she asked, "I am curious - what do you do with your time? I mean, not to be rude, but I can't think of what I'd do if I wasn't so preoccupied with surviving and moving around. That's pretty much my whole life. Not that I mind it, that's just how it is."
She glanced outside and watched the wind blow.

What a pity, thought Silanus. Ernest could have had the world of a real patrician, yet she was so used to the wanderer, nomad's life that she refused it. Even if Silanus had trouble understanding it, he had to respect her decision. Changing one's whole life can be hard…
The general was looking kind of disappointed, he was hoping her to accept his offer. Silanus turned his gaze to the window. The weather was not really calm; it was windy and perhaps it would probably start to rain soon. When he turned his sight at Ernest once again, he answered: "
I understand it's not your lifestyle, still your answer is kind of dispiriting. You may stay and leave whenever you please."Silanus sat down once again, with a neutral look in his face. He still wanted to ask some questions about her different and particular lifestyle, perhaps some anecdotes? "
If you want to keep exploring the city, simply let me know. Even if the weather is not the best. Same thing if you're hungry or tired, the best cooks of Canelux are here…" A sinister grin appeared on the general's face, adding some few words to his last statement:
The best cooks of Canelux are kept here, even if some of them are here against their against their will, haha…"

This was not what Ernest had expected from the general. She stared blankly at Silanus for a minute. To live here, in this wonderful city, without needing to worry about anything… she had never thought that might happen. She did not even know how to respond.
It was tempting to accept his offer. To become a noble and stay here forever. But, on the other hand, she wondered, what would she do? Her life revolved around endless days on the road, travelling, finding food and shelter where she could. What would her life be without that. And the things she had discovered - would she give that all up? Still, a part of her told her that she was being foolish, that she would only be giving up hardships, nothing more.
She stood still, and her fingers fluttered down to her bag by chance touching the thin papery rim of a map. A memory flickered through her head - her uncle Alf, offering her the map. He had told her it was hers, the island on there, and she had dedicated her life to finding it. Was she simply going to turn her back on her dream?
"Thank you, " she said, "for offering all this to me. I am honoured. But, I am afraid I cannot accept. I am a wanderer, an explorer. I do not think I can give that up. Your city is wonderful, and if I am near, I would gladly come and visit for a little while, but I do not think I could stay for a long time. I wouldn't know what to do with myself."

How interesting her story was, thought Silanus. None… None of this insignificant bloodshed, no war, no conquest or kingdoms. Only a simple orphan who tried to make a life in the cruel, crude world she lived in. Hard as it can get, Ernest was able to live on, even if her actions were not a very prestigious and she had to live on as a criminal.
Quite fascinated by the story of a poor girl who grew up to be a thief, struggling to do things that seemed so simple and necessary to him, for example finding shelter, Silanus spoke to her: "
It seems life has never treated you fairly, but in an inhumane way instead. That people, instead of trying to help you, have made your life harder than it should have been." Silanus, looking at the floor, thinking about what he would have done in her situation.
The general sat down in a bench, made of a very fine stone with marble handlings. Of course, he offered Ernest to take a seat, be in the same bench or in one of the two chairs that surrounded it. "
You don't have to live in a such mundane way, Ernest. You may live as a patrician in this city, be my guest. My party will pay for your livings, consider it as an act of sympathy; both for helping us against the wolves and forgiving us for trying to enslave you." Silanus stood up, hiding his left arm behind his long, red cloak, while indicating with his right arm to look around. "
If you'd like, you may be able to select a district to live in. As long as you don't disturb the everlasting peace of the mighty Amiternum and live under her rules, you may get whatever you ask for. Live as a noble, something you have never experienced, yet deserve to." Why was he doing this? Asked himself. He has enslaved, murdered and even sacked cities, yet he was allowing a random thief to live as a noble! Perhaps Ernest's story made him feel identified quite a bit?

Ernest supposed it was natural for him to ask about her life, but she still felt shy about it. She had gone many years without anyone knowing who she was. Then again, she had never really gotten to know anyone.
"I suppose my story isn't very interesting," she said with a shrug. "I grew up in a little village with no name that I know of. My family…" she paused. It had been a long time, but it still saddened her. "The family I knew died in a fever when I was twelve. I became a wanderer after that. I knew no one on the caravan. Actually, I wasn't even supposed to be on there. I was just trying to get somewhere else because several shopkeepers were trying to get me arrested for stealing from them."
She sighed, knowing that she must look petty and insignificant next to Silanus. "I suppose most people would call me a bad person, but I've never thought that. Even good people must have bad luck sometimes."
It occurred to her, oddly, that she and Silanus had more in common than she had once thought. They both had lost their parents to a trouble they had escaped, and, in the life they had built, had made many enemies. It was an odd thought.

What curious questions Ernest asked, Silanus thought. He would have expected a question like that, though. Ernest didn't seem to be familiar with such situations. Being with the governor of a city, no, a whole empire… That would be such honour!
"
All what you see here is normal for me. My father was the chief of the once smaller Fratis Clan, which was destroyed when I was six. My cousin and I fled with other survivors, as the son of the Chief of course I was praised as a governor." Said Silanus, proud of his history. He was proud that his family died defending the Clan and was honoured to be the leader of the new clan, which then grew to be an Empire.
Looking at Ernest again, asked Silanus: "
And you? What's your story before I assaulted the caravan? Did you have a familiar in there? Were you fleeing or simply hoping for a better begining?" The general supposed Ernest had no noble bounds or something like that. He thought she probably was a merchant or that she hired the carriage she was in to other people. A honest job, perhaps?

Ernest stared for a second before realizing that was probably rude and turning back to face where they were going. She had become… well, she supposed, a friend, of the to-be emperor of Amiternum. Never had she thought that something like that could happen.
He asked if she would like to see the palace, and Ernest almost fell off her horse. "Yes, please," she said, suddenly excited. She had never seen a palace before - except on the outside. She had tried to pickpocket a lady right outside of a palace once, but that was her total experience with palaces.
It was a little odd, she thought, how different this was from her normal life. Silanus, talking about politics and senates and uniting kingdoms. All of that was foreign to her. She wondered what it was like, being someone powerful and influential. "Is is strange having so much power?" she asked. "I mean, knowing that you can bend an entire nation to your rule. I would think it would be rather extraordinary." Although, maybe he was used to it. Who knew?

Again, Tacitus Silanus could see how nervous Ernest was. The people didn't surround them, but instead they watched from quite a distance, since it was dangerous to approach the general himself without permission. It might be considered as an assault attempt, and guards are not very kind with suspected criminals…
The guards, all armoured in a similar way than Silanus and the other troopers (except the guards had a bronze coloured armor, while the soldiers had dark steel coloured ones.) Approached the crowd, just in case someone attempts to get too close. The merchants, seeing Silanus, tried to offer their wares to him, while the other citizens were mostly looking and either applauding or minding their businesses.
"
I do, actually. Of course, there is a small senate and some counsrlors who help me. But I will, by decision of the Fratian army and the senate, become the Emperor of Amiternum one day. However, first I must unify the Steppes under the Fratian flag; until then I am simply a general with political power" Said Silanus, while waving his hand at the citizens who were trying to get his attention. Silanus guided Ernest towards the high district, where mostly public and important buildings took place. Here, the buildings that took place were a large statue of a Fratian soldier holding a spear, a temple of the Divine Ancestors, a public bath, a small fountain and of course, the City Palace. The people who lived here weere Silanus and his cousin Illia, one important noble (also, an arrogant woman who was full of herself) and other kind of important politicians and their servants lived.
"
Well I suppose that, as an honor citizen, you have the right to see the palace. What do you think?" Asked Silanus, giving one small smirk at Ernest.

The city was beautiful. Ernest thought that she had never seen a nicer place in her life - although it was a lot easier to like somewhere when you knew no one there either wanted to kill you or would in a few days. Of course, the orcs wanted to kill her, but, according to Silanus, they were just mad at the Fratians in general.
She suddenly realized that Silanus was waiting for a reply. "It's amazing," she said. "Thank you for inviting me here."
The two of them set off down the main street, Ernest turning her head to try and see everything while still not running into anyone; she had a feeling that wasn't the best way to enter a city. Not that she had much practice - her usual method of entering cities was to hide in the crowd and hope no one paid attention to her. That method, she reflected, didn't work as well when you were walking down the street with the general.
She could feel people watching her. She knew it was only a natural response on their part, but she didn't like it. She wasn't used to being conspicuous.
"There are a lot of people here," she commented. "Are you in charge of the whole city?"

Tacitus Silanus frowned, thinking about what Ernest nervously said. Orcs attacked her… It was clear! There was only one native tribe of orcs who disliked humans so much, the Breleks. "
The Breleks, I imagine. They don't recognise this area as Fratian territory, and refuse to accept us as neighbours. They have finally found an excuse to turn hostile…" Said Silanus, his grin turning in an expression of sorrow when he gazed upon the dead captain.
"
May your deeds be remembered, Marcia." Whispered the general; after that, he grabbed a spear from captain Marcia's corpse and, with a rapid movement, placed it in the ground, then he placed her helmet in the spear-head as a memorial. "
Give her an honest funeral" said Silanus to his bodyguards. After that, while they carried her body to a pack horse, Silanus walked towards Ernest.
"
Don't be sorry, they would have attacked anyways. She died as every Fratian wants to, in battle." With his hands, Silanus raised Ernest's chin, who seemed to be looking down, as if she was somewhat anxious. "
Let's go to Amiternum, perhaps this time you shall find it without getting assaulted by any mad orc" Said, removing his hand from her face. A confident smirk appeared on his face, hopefully his confidence would make Ernest feel less sorry. He wanted to make her know it wasn't her fault.
As they went towards the city in two different horses, both being guided by a professional chivalry man, they finally arrives to Amiternum. It was a beautiful city, it didn't cover as much space as a huge city, but it was definitely bigger than an average town. Around the entrance, 6 crucified dead men could be seen. Their bodies covered with blood and their legs with a little of their other body fluids. Walls of 9 meters tall and a large gate blocked their entry, of course they were opened immediately. Inside the city, a lot of light gray stone buildings could be seen, all of them were made with a different style that the ones most buildings had.
The city was antique fashioned, however for some reason, it gave a feeling of modernization and even art. Everyone had different clothing styles, even the poor plebeians! These tunics were truly unique. Fountains, statues, this city seemed different than most, even if it had some resemblance with the cities of the Other Continent, as the Fratians call it. They stopped on the main Street, both of them dismounting their horses. "
It's a beauty, isn't it?" Asked Silanus, proud of Amiternum. "
Welcome to Amiternum."

Ernest spun around at the sound of that voice. She recognized it. How could she not have? Silanus was… memorable. "Did I miss something?" he asked, grinning. Ernest studied him, a smile slowly breaking out across her face.
"Only an orc attack. Nothing much, really." She paused for breath and suddenly remembered the captain. "I'm afraid your captain didn't make it, however," she said sadly.
"I'm sorry about the orcs. They followed me here." The words came out of her mouth before she thought, and it was only after a moment that she realized she truly
was sorry. Apology didn't usually come naturally to her. "This may have been my fault. They don't like outsiders, apparently. That's why they attacked."
Suddenly realizing it might not be her place to speak about it, she added, "Sorry if I'm out of line. I thought I should tell you." Inwardly, she sighed. She didn't seem to be making a very good first impression upon most of the people.

Everyone, be orc or man, turned to see Ernest, who was warning them about something. Naturally, when the Fratians saw her hands glowing some kind of white, they dropped to the ground and took cover. The orcs, on the other hand, ran towards her; if she was a danger, they would try to deal with her as fast as possible.
However, right before one orc could hit Ernest with his mace, she cast a spell which sent him, and all the other standing orcs around 12 meters away, quite a surprising attack! The Fratian soldiers, however, were barely moved, perhaps it was thanks to them being laying on the floor, or maybe there's another reason, who knows.
Orcs are relentless creatures, who preferred to die over fleeing, so once they got on their feet, they approached the border men once again. It seemed that it was not Ernest's fate to die here, as a barrage or crossbow bolts fall upon the barbarians. Not only that, but Tacitus Silanus himself had arrived, with his personal group of skirmishers, who were standing right behind Ernest and the border patrol. Another barrage of bolts was shot, this time finishing the other orcs. "
Did I miss something?" Asked the general, sarcastically grinning.

Ernest stared at the scene in front of her. In a matter of moments, this had gone from one stalking orc to a battleground. She stood on the edge of the fight, watching, unsure if she could help, or do anything at all, really. Ernest wasn't a fighter. She never had been. But she couldn't let innocent people die to protect her.
Her fingers twitched with anger. She was so… helpless. Then, for a moment, she stopped. She wasn't quite helpless. She
could use magic, couldn't she? She had never done something of this magnitude, but there seemed no other option.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. She didn't know what exactly she could do, but she pictured what she wanted - the orcs, flying through the air, landing… well, as far away as she could make them.
"Get back!" she hollered to the soldiers. Unable to wait to see if they heard, she reached for her magic and cast a spell.
She collapsed suddenly, surprised at the sudden decrease in her strength. Gasping, she pulled herself to her feet and peered over the rim of the blockade, afraid of what she might see on the other side.

Why would the orcs surround the well-known patrol outpost? They had an alliance with the Fratians… Well, most orcs and natives of the Steppes have, even if some weren't really happy with it. Of course, the guards un-sheated their swords and readied their shields, but how would they even stand a chance against dozen orcs?
Those were no elite soldiers, reason they guard a patrol outpost; the only decent fighter was the captain, but she and her patrolmen would never stand a chance ce against those orcs, so she decided to "negotiate" "
Stay here, if one orc raises an axe, follow the road made of gravel, follow the sign!" The captain pointed at a sign. It had three arrows, one of them indicated a road which was supposed to lead to Amiternum, home of the Fratians.
Acting calm, the captain walked towards them, hand ready to pull out her sword if necessary. When she was close enough, she spoke to them: "
May I know the reason you were brought here, socii orcs? Would you like to solicit a meeting with Tacitus Silanus, or something?" One orc, the one with the thickest armor stepped towards her and replied: "
No more outsiders. Your city has enough of them, this shit keeps going more outsiders than orcs there will be here. Kill her, give her to us." (Socii means member in latin, a position which meant the member was independent, but still served under the military if he was ordered to.)
All the soldiers looked back at Ernest. They would have agreed and handed her over, however the captain knew that if their "dictator" Silanus invited her, she must have been alive. "
I must refuse." Said the captain. "
She is needed alive, by order of Tacitus Silanus." Before she could finish, one orc threw an axe at her, which pierced through her helmet and, of course, stuck in her skull. She fell to the ground, dead, while the rest of the soldiers charged into a hopeless battle. The orcs raised their weapons, which meant that there would be death.

Ernest answered the last question first. "There was an orc stalking me. There might have been more, I don't know." She seemed to remember other forms in the shadows, but she wasn't sure. "As for 'who am I'," she continued, "my name is Ernest. You have probably never heard of me, but I was invited here by a general of yours. His name is Silanus - you've probably heard of him." She paused. "Thank you for helping me. I kind of… got lost." She didn't bother mentioning that she wasn't fully sure if she had ever been on the right track. It didn't seem worth it.
Whatever response the captain was about to give her was lost in a deep, reverberating horn call that echoed through the valley. Ernest turned, and, from where she was standing, could see roughly a dozen orcs scattered at the edge of the woods. She stared at the ground. There went her chances of making people like her. She was pretty sure this was her fault, one way or another.

Outraged by the girl's swift escape, the orc tried to throw his axe as a last attempt to end her life. However, his axe missed her again, hitting nothing but a tree next to Ernest. After that, the orc stopped pursuing her, for she was too fast.
It seemed that Ernest ran more than one would expect, because eventually she reached an outpost belonging to the Fratians. It was not very protected and had only 5 guards and a horse, with two small wooden barricades. The guards were quite surprised when they saw a running girl, escaping from… Something? Her shoulder wound was too notorious, so they immediately asked her to stop.
Two guards, curiously dressed with the same exact armor the soldiers that captured Ernest had, approached her. One of them, who had his hand stretched indicating her to halt, said: "
Who injured you? I don't see anybody… were you assaulted, outsider?" The other man, who seemed to be indifferent by her condition, asked: "
And why might you be here, approaching a city? Not everyone is allowed in Amiternum, home of Fratians… You're no merchant, nor an ambassador. Who are you?" The third guard, who seemed to be the one in charge, approached Ernest. It was notable that this captain was a woman, something not very common in the Fratian ranks. She softly placed her right hand on the girl's wound, then spoke to his guardsmen: "
Bring something to stop the blood!" In merely one minute, Ernest's wound was stopped by a leather patch. The three soldiers, surrounding her, guided Ernest to their outpost: "
You seem tired and agitated. What happened out there?" Asked the captain.

Things were never as easy as they appeared. It should have come as no surprise that it would not be a simple journey to where the torches were. Firstly, barely five minutes after she set off, the torches vanished. There was no discernible reason, at least as far as Ernest could see. They just vanished.
It was less than two minutes later when the orc grabbed her. "Intruders in the Steppes are not welcome, pest," it whispered. "Why are you here? This place is no place for you at all."
"I am no intruder," said Ernest, hoping the creature would care. "I was invited."
The orc cackled. "Well," he said. "Seeing as you have no friends, no one will miss you when you vanish."
Ernest knew he wasn't lying, but it didn't really surprise her when he didn't let her go. "I suppose that means you won't miss me either," she said. jerking her arm free with a twist. The creature tried to stab her with his hand-axe, but missed her neck, only hitting her shoulder. Ernest ran full force for the last place she had seen the torches, hearing many pairs of footsteps behind her.
Author: Silanus, Posted: Sun Dec 18, 2016 11:47 PM, Post Subject: Into the Mountains [P]
The torches simply vanished. Why? Easy, the men had entered a brighter area, one where a torch would be useless, also it was risky since it could light a fire in all these woods. After all, it was a forest. Silanus and his few remaining soldiers from the accident of the Rainforest had finally found three mounted patrolmen, who, surprised to see their general, escorted him and his troopers into safety with haste.
Meanwhile, somebody was stalking Ernest, somebody who was not very happy with her visit. Moving through the shadows, unseen, a silent orc grabbed Ernest by her arm and put his hand-axe near her neck. Then he whispered: "
Intruders in the Steppes are not welcome, pest. Why are you here? This place is no place for you at all!"

Ernest had seen no one for three days. She was following directions from the leader of a band of troopers she had met it the forest - "Follow the dirt roads, the fallen trees, eventually you will find it." Well, she was on a dirt road, and there were plenty of fallen trees, but she felt like she was missing something, like there was a deeper hint somewhere in there. She shrugged, keeping on the path.
It was a strange turn of events that had led her here - being kidnapped, escaping, and then slowly becoming friends with the troopers she couldn't seem to get rid of. She still wasn't sure what all she thought of them. They were not like most other people she had met.
Sighing, she crested the latest hill. It was nearly dark, and she thought she saw torches ahead of her. They were far ahead, but she thought, if they didn't move, she might catch up to them in a day or so. If she was being honest with herself, she would have said she just wanted to see people again. Ernest had never been so alone.
Well, she decided,
no rest for the weary. She set off toward the group of torches, not noticing the shadow that followed her through the darkness.
