In the dark of the night, screams of terror split the air. Amongst a small group of travelers whom had set up camp for the night, was a creature of unimaginable horror. It attacked them all, men and women alike unrelentingly. The creature was vicious, breaking bones, tearing flesh, doing all that was needed to get as much blood from them as possible, not even caring how messy it was. It was their blood it craved, and oh how it craved it. It had driven the beast to madness, a violent act of desperation. One would think it were a creature that had not fed for months, years even.

Then, once the cries of its victims finally died down, there was nothing left but unnatural silence. The bodies were left lying on the ground, mutilated and pale, as their blood had been drained from them completely. But now, there stood the creature in the midst of the massacre scene. Beautiful was she with skin so pale it could rival the moon, and her dark raven hair that could rival the starless night. She had eyes like scarlet jewels that shined under the moon’s light, her most stunning and beautiful feature. But she had the fangs of a beast, dripping with burgundy liquid. Though beautiful she may be, she was covered with the blood of her victims. Her face, her clothes, her hair, it was all stained red.

She looked over the scene before her, calmer now that her hunger had been satisfied, and her composure regained. So blinded by her desperation for blood, she hadn’t even realized what she had done until now. Now, her human mind had returned, and she gazed in horror. So many were dead. Innocent lives were taken, and by her. She looked at her bloodied hands and her body began to tremble. Tremble with fear of herself. What had she done?

When she had awoken earlier that night she found herself locked within a coffin, and managed to dig herself out and into the open world. What she had seen, the world around her was so different than what she remembered. It wasn’t the same land she once knew. Vivid memories of her death came to her shortly after. She knew she had died, but how was she alive now? No other memories came to aid her. But more than confusion, what she felt the most was an overwhelming urge to feed. She could hear people in the distance, and the scent of their blood caused fangs to grow far larger than that of a normal human being. That was the last thing she remembered before finding herself in this bloody scene.

She fell to her knees and released a scream that sounded almost inhuman, like a creature that was being brutally killed. But yet, despite how terrible she felt for performing such a ruthless deed, her heart did not pound restlessly within her chest. In fact, it didn’t beat at all. This she learned when she clutched her hands over her chest, bending forward to the point where her nose almost touched the ground. And there, she froze. As a quick breeze blew softly by she shivered, and noticed that, not only did her heart bare no beat, her body was also cold to the touch. Warm blood no longer flowed through her veins, now replaced with the cold blood of a dead being.

Then, and only then, had she come to realize what she had become. A creature of the night, forced to live by the moon and hide from the sun. She was neither dead, nor could she claim to have life, for she had no beating heart and could not offer bodily warmth. Blood was her only craving, her only means of survival in the world of the living. Her life revolved around blood, and she would go insane from long periods of time without it. She was a vampire, a horrid creature.

Vampire…vampire…As the word repeated through her mind, she began to figure out how it all happened. She had one memory that happened during her time of life before her untimely death, only one. And it was the answer to how this cursed life came to be.

She had a lover, one whom wasn’t human. He too was a vampire, but she did not fear him. Instead, she embraced him and offered his cold body warmth. There was a carriage, and then an accident. She was with child at the time, and lost it during her misfortune. She too lost her life that day, but she remembered that, before her death, her lover was there. He wept for her and their child, and as her life slipped from her, she felt a prick in the side of her neck.

It all came to her; he had bitten her and gifted her with his blood. But, it seemed to have taken a long time to settle and take affect. Just how long has it been exactly? She raised her head, tears that had been trickling down her face now drying as she looked up blankly at the moon. If her love truly wished for her to live, so dearly that he gave her his own blood and turned her, then she would live for him. Like he, she would embrace this new life and accept what she is. There was no turning back. Vampires lived for a very long time, so perhaps he was out there, somewhere, awaiting her return.

Now that her quivering had stopped, she stood to her bare feet. “I’m coming, my love.” The words left her bloodied lips like a soft tune, her voice beautiful and soothing. She took the first step, and started heading towards the closest tent. There, she used her victims’ items and cleansed herself and changed her clothing. Now, she was relieved from any blood as she fixed herself with care, and what left the tent thereafter was not a horrid creature, but a beautiful young woman who’s bodily appearance was frozen in time. From there on out, she began traveling in search of her lover, starting with the nearest town, leaving the horror behind.
