Personality
It would be disingenuous to say that Gaelen was completely a product of his upbringing. Growing up on the streets of a cesspool like Vilpamolan would of course have an effect on a person. However the ease at which Gaelen adapted the need to scavenge, steal, and kill to survive suggested he was likely to turn out similarly regardless of his circumstances. There was always a place for someone like him in a city saturated by pirates, thieves, and mercenaries assuming you lived until the point. It was from these people that Gaelen learned how to wield a blade, more or less making a living from killing others. The simple fact is that Gaelen doesn't really care what he does so long as he is paid adequately.

This may come as a surprise but Gaelen isn't much of a 'people person'. His personality tends to range from indifferent to downright abhorrent. He is however quite good at his job and as such, most people tend to put up with him. Gaelen, despite his general dislike of everything is a pragmatic man. Therefore when required he is capable of working alongside others to achieve his task.
