Backstory:

Vicente Cadenza is the fourth-born Sky Captain in a long, proud - if not checkered - heritage. He idolized the image of his father behind the helm of his grandfather’s airship since he was old enough to walk. The transport of goods had been their primary trade. He’d grown up with the deck beneath his feet nearly more than land. Those feet were put to work as soon as he could tie a bowline.

Literacy was more than a passing fancy. Maintaining logs and haggling over contracts replaced any formal schooling. Geography and cultural diversity were daily lessons. He came to don the title of deck officer on his eighteenth name day, second in command only to his father. The sky was the limit.

As the sun rises, the trade winds turn, and that same golden orb sets: Vicente’s father’s age quickly caught up to him. Captain Jacques Cadenza had become a Captain later in life than most. His own father had held onto the dream with an iron grip. As a result, Vicente was born much later in his father’s life. But, the man’s relatively short tenure as Captain would be rewarded with a sizable bounty so he could hand the vessel over in short order to his son. Vicente’s father would retire in an unremarkable cottage, in an unremarkable countryside with Vicente's mother: the quite remarkable love of his life.

Vicente was content in knowing his parents would be taken care of. However, the thrill of finally owning the helm of Gale’s Lament had been his only reoccurring dream. The family business would go on, yet its nature would take a more ambiguous turn in the hands of such a young captain. At 26 he took his first real job that turned a blind eye to an otherwise questionable feat of morality. The result was a successful heist that saw him with one Vincent Cross in his employ. He’d had to deploy some mental gymnastics to convince himself that the job was really a work of valiance. To this day he can’t help but feel a tinge of guilt when he looks at Mr. Cross, his Deck Officer. Yet, the fact that the young man is gainfully employed is enough to help him sleep like a babe at night.

Three years later would see the second most meaningful addition to his crew. An emergency landing somewhere far from where he needed to be was necessary to keep his crew’s physician alive. The man had spent several nights exposing himself to toxic plants in order to “build an immunity” to his research specimens. Luckily for the scattered brained scholar, a bright, up and coming woman with a background in herbology was able to quell the swelling in his throat. However, to the man’s detriment, Vicente spared no hesitation in terminating his contract before offering Rhoda Aelish tenure aboard his vessel.

The next handful of years saw prosperity for the crew of Gale’s Lament. Vicente’s own flexibility with the types of contracts he’d accept - ones his father would have never entertained - were only diversified even more by his friendship with his Bosun, Vincent. Eventually, they would reunite with the man that had introduced the Rogue to the Captain for another job that sounded as easy, and more importantly, as fruitful, as their maiden voyage together.

The job went off without a hitch. The sail back seemed like an uneventful one. A skeleton crew was left to stand watch as the rest took place in wine and food in the galley.

That would be the last night Captain Vic, Bosun Cross, and Miss Aelish would see Gale's Lament and the rest of their crew alive…
